I think it was like an 80-year-old record.

In case you've been living under a rock or don't follow baseball, it's most hits in a season, 258 hits.

too bad he got off to a slow start or he would have shattered this record a month ago.

ive been rooting for him, i think he's an outstanding talent. he should probably end with about 263 or so hits, good for him.

Understatment of the year.

In any case, we here in Washington are used to sports teams that amount to nothing year after year.

You're right, it's not the same. Sisler had it easy in his time. Ichiro had to do it in harder conditions than Sisler, so I think that makes Ichiro a better hitter than Sisler.

Sisler's era:
-one pitcher per game-a pitcher is expected to pitch a complete game
-no speciality(sp?) pitches were performed at the time (slider, etc)

Ichiro's era:
-usually 3-4 pitchers appear in a game
-various styles/types of pitches are thrown.

EDIT: After reading about the record breaking, found out that he owns the rookie record for most hits in a season, breaking Shoeless Joe Jackson's record. In the game, not only he broke the record for most hits in a season, now he's owns the record for most hits in a four year span with 919 hits. This guy is truly a natural born hitter, too bad he's only 30, if he started when he was young, he could've been a threat to Pete Rose's record for most career hits.

if you look at Sisler's season, it was hardly different. He played in 154 games. Ichiro will probably finish playing in 160.

However, I think Sisler's 1920 season was far more impressive. he only struck out 19 times in over 600 Ab's. 122 rbi's. unbelievable.

I dont want to take a thing away from Ichiro, but I was a bit surprised to see Sisler's other stats.

sisler was a better hitter no question.

If Ichiro was playing in Sisler's era, he would demolish his record in no time.

In all honesty, you can't really compare the two. Both eras are very different. I'll agree that Sisler is the best hitter in HIS time, but there's no such thing the best hitter in history, because the game has evolved significiantly through-out time. I would consider Ichiro as one of today's generation best hitters.

I agree with Homer. Hitting .400 used to be commonplace in those days, and now no one has hit .400 in over 60 years. Do you really think its because the hitters were better in that era? I don't.

agreed, ichiro is a premier player in todays game.

I was just blown away by Sisler's whole season that year, I had never seen all the stats, just his # of hits so I thought I would share.
