since im taking a break from the gym should i bump my calories up or down

You need to bump your calories way up, you're never gonna gain weight eating 1000-1500 cals a day.

If you're not working out you should eat at maintenance level.

Agreed.

Check out the articles in WBB's nutrition/diet articles section. Particularly look at the one "Dieting Basics", it gives a rundown on how to handle dieting, and gives a very good formula for calculating your BMR and an indication of how many calories you should be eating to maintenance. Sorry dude, but 1500 won't cut it.
