View Full Version : Tuna protein versus Whey protein?

I was wondering if anyone had long-term experience in tuna protein versus whey protein and any applicable results. At this point - for me - it has become more practical to just buy canned tuna fish from the grocery store than order whey protein on the internet. I rather like the taste of tuna so that isn't really a factor for me. I've pretty much sold myself onto the switch over, partly due to price and partly due to conveniance, but mostly conveniance. I know protein is the typical prison protein plan, but when compared to whey protein, how do the two products (given, say, a comparable amount of whey protein/serving [tuna = 39g/serving vs. whey = 39-42g/serving] ) compare?

I am not 100% sure, but I have always been under the impression that protein from real food sources is better then whey.

and a ? for you, there are no merchants around where you live that you can buy whey at?

This was in a local paper, it had some sort of index that rated the usefulness of different types of proteins and it said that whey was about 104%(this doesn't make sense to me how ur body can use 104% of something) dairy was in the 90's and meat protein fish chicken beef was raning from around 57-65% useful.

If you can stand the taste of sardines, then get yourself a Fry's VIP card, and grab as many cans of crown prince fish steaks as you can afford. I've never seen more protein for less money than these things. They come in oil or Louisiana hot sauce (hot sauce has 1 more gram of protein), and with a Fry's card, you get 24g protein for 50 cents. And sardines are less likely to have mercury in them. You really should limit the tuna intake to 1 can per week to be safe. Those fish steaks are awesome as long as you can stomach them. As far as whey or fish/meat? I say take in every source of protein possible, and in the future post diet questions in the diet forums.

its a relative scale, not absolute

the sh-t about mercury is BS. I was eating 1-3 cans of tuna everyday for over a year and I'm fine. I don't eat it much now cuz I'm bulking and I'm usually eating something with a lot more calories. But tuna is great and so is whey. Use both...

yup, I eat one can of tuna a day. Usually 5 days a week. I take it to work with me, and eat at my desk. I've been doing it for a little less then a year. I think all that mercury poisoning has to do with long long term uses of tuna. Or something very extreme.

I quit when I heard all the bad stuff it does to you, but I smoked for 5-8 years and never had a problem!

lol I should be dead long time now too. I'm eating 2-3 cans/day for over a year now. I'll prepare my will to be ready just in case

No but serously, I was HIGHLEY recomonded by a DR to only consume 1 can of tuna a week. Now what I do is buy sardines :D . I don't minde the taiste or the appearance.

i think there would be plenty of dead body builders by now if it wre the case....and you know what...i think it is the best way to get protein other then scoops of whey, and im going to keep using it cuz it is the ****.......if i die....well then my family gets lots of money, atleast I get to die buff

ah yes and ive never heard anything about the diff kinds of protein so i got no idea

The average amount of Merury(0.35 parts per million or ppm) is exceedingly low. To put this amount into perspective, FDA has set a limit of 1.00 ppm for mercury in fish and both canned light and albacore tuna are well below this level.

It has a very very nominal effect on a healthy male, as it is filtered out.

Take that for what it's worth.

Regardless, I don't think anyone is eating 10 cans/day, so just calm down. You can die from drinking too much water for christ's sake, maybe we should abstain from water from now on too :rolleyes:.

Come on now dont be so pessimistic.. Tuna can also have beneficial effects to the lives and careers of many people. According to unsubstantiated rumors Freddie Mercury of Queen was named after his passionate addiction to tuna. He used to consume more than 10 cans per day (with lots of water too.. he was one crazy mofo), hence the "metalic" pitch in his voice. And while he may not have been attracted to women, he was definately attracted to magnets.

Geoff, I'm sorry, but you can't possibly compare the negative effects of smoking to those of consuming canned fish. It's an issue of prevalence. We know smoking leads to lung cancer in "some", and we know consuming canned tuna leads to mercury poisoning in "some". We also know that "some" people have died from drinking too much water, and that "some" people get hit crossing the street. The difference between smoking and all my other examples is that the rate at which the negative effects occur is FAR greater in those who smoke.

We can't avoid every little thing in life that "might" have some negative effect on us, or we'd just end up confined in our own homes sitting in a chair, staring blankly at the wall. The key to remember is: everything in moderation.

I used to eat about 6-7 of the 6oz cans of tuna each day because I loved the taste and it is good for ya...now I still eat tuna but limit myself to the occassional sushi meal.

I would say living in sealed sunproof containers with pure oxygen supply, drinking distilled water and eating genetically engineered foods produced inside a lab. Toxic compounds and poisonous substances in small concentrations are EVERYWHERE, not only in fish, because the ecosystem is a closed circuit with recycling flows. Hopefully the human organism has the ability to dispose or tolerate these substances, given that the exposure is limited both in terms of quantity and duration. In any case, the belief that you protect yourself by avoiding canned fish is at least futile since you would have to eliminate a thousand other factors related solely to your nutrition, not smoking or bungee jumping or being harassed by a 240 pound girl like it happened to me in junior high
