Hello,

I was wondering if its true that taking HGH can actually increase the number of muscle cells and not just their volume. Is this true? I read this on anabolicreview.com.

Let me know, Thanks.

It has been claimed in many places but it has yet to doumented to occur in adults to my knowledge in and accredited study. Mind you it would be an extremely difficult thing to measure so don't expect to find any real research in this area.

Thanks for the input.

The body's tissues have development stages.
HGH can't create new muscle tissue (hypertrophy is simply the increase in volume of existing muscle tissue) any more than HGH can open up the closed off growth plates in bones and let you grow taller at age 40, for example.

You keep the same amount of muscle cells forever... they can only get larger or smaller.

In some ANIMAL models muscle hyperplasia has been documented to occur, however, as ST said it would be very difficult to examine this in a human. First a muscle biopsy would be taken and fibers counted, a very grueling process in itself. Then, the training would take place generally 2 months at least in most studies. Then a muscle biopsy would be taken again. However, due to movement and possible growth it would be VERY difficult to get a biopsy in the EXACT same location as before. Hypertrophy occurs in the muscle as a result of increased fiber area from the addition of new actin and myosin filaments to the myofibril on the muslce fiber.

Thanks for explaining it Spidey...I'm far to lazy to today. As Spidey said animal models have documented muscle hyperplasia. The research on humans hasn't been conclusive because of the difficulty of the study. Some of the research on satallite cells I've looked at makes me believe it does occur at some level so there are arguments on both sides but what is agreed is that *if* hyperplasia does occur it contributes to a very small amount of total muscle growth.

Now *if* hyperplasia does indeed occur it would make sense that based on how growth hormone interacts with cells it could accelerate or aid in the process but physiology doesn't always follow theory.

Well if you were still a teen and your growth plates were open then yes HGH would help you grow taller.

I need to check the articles I read while researching the mIGF-1 article I wrote for the site...but I think HGH recruited satellite cells which later became part of the muscular syncytia. I'm not huge on endocrinology...imm. and molecular are more my thing so I trust ST...but for some reason I seem to remember differently.
