I just did Cleans for the very first time, and i'm excited because i have a new favorite exercise :) I'm thinking of putting this into my routine permenatly and alternating with squats and deads once in a while. But consintrating on the cleans. One question, what is a good weight to be throwing around on cleans if your about 145 - 150

BW cleans, while by no means an olympic feat, are both respectable and a good goal for most general lifting trainees. Once you can rep these with good form, well, keep adding weight.

what all do cleans work......doesnt it work basically like everything, you could just do them and do like nothing else the whole week or something silly like that

75 would be a fair bit for a guy 145-150 just starting up cleans.

i think clean and jerk would pretty much cover everything. But chest would probably be underworked.

how about a clean jerk and press...?? that would cover it pretty decent i think, other then yea chest would still be a little under worked, id like to try that for a few weeks just do cleans and press like twice a week and see how it felt....anyone ever tried something similar to that???

I've only seen 2 people ever do cleans at the gym. Never tried them, but I may. I guess I'm not sure where to start as far as form goes.

A bodybuilder would be ill suited by only doing cleans (and presses). As would almost any athlete. Even olympic lifters do other assistance exercises.

I don't see any reason to only do olympic lifts, unless you're an olympic lifter.

If you want to start learning the olympic lifts, learn the form on all of the portions of the lift before you start slinging the bar around. Most importantly in my book, make sure you have good, deep front squat form with a clean grip. Then you can worry about the other parts of the motion.

There are a number of lifters at my gym that I often see doing cleans. Interestingly, they all have one thing in common: huge friggin traps ;)

i didnt know you were supposed to dip down so low and squat it up like that, no wonder i never got over 185 back in hs when i did em

i like hang cleans personally. and on those i found i dont have to go as low and outs more emphasis on your back rather than your legs.. but thats proably just me.

some guy introduced me to them at the gym. he introduced them with the press over the head at the end so that's what i thought they were. after watching that video now i know the press isn't even in the real excercise.

i recommend doing the press at the end though. that lift is so good. it really gets me.

After learning the technique, most people struggle more with the jerk. So it would Be advantageous to learn that over the press.

The winner of the 69kg category at Athens had a 187.5kg (412.5LBs) clean. So 190kg would Be a good goal.

Here's a video of Kurlovich cleaning more weight then I've ever seen on a Bar:

what do you mean by learning the jerk over the press. like i do it normally like in the picture accept not going down that far because i stil use a light weight so i don't really need that much power, and then just add a press on the end. i was just saying i didn't realize that the press at the end was not really part of it

that video didn't work for me, the one posted above this that is

A jerk and a press are not even remotely the same thing.

If you're going to try to clean, this order will suit you best if you have no coach (though a coach is *always* recommended): front squat, clean pull, power clean, clean high pull, drop clean, full clean.

Is that a valid jerk? I can't tell if he is tearing his hair out in joy or frustration.

That chick in the vid was using bumpers and they were pretty thin. I don't think it was 135. Maybe 89-95.

How did it go? Did you do them after or before squat/deadlift

some guy told me about 'manmakers' while i was doing a clean and press. i tried them the were pretty rough and i think i'll start doing them.

basically you start in hang clean position pull it while squating down then press it on your way up, then bring it down behind your head while squatting again, on teh way up press it up again and then bring it back to start. kind of hard to explain i hope you see what i mean. 5 sets of 5 he said. i don't think i'll do that many. i'm doing wbb1 and i'm just going to replace military press with 'man makers' about 2 sets of 6-8

i suggest you try em out, they're a little weird at first, but they're tough so i like them.

when i do cleans, i do not squat or deadlift. I will do cleans for 3 sets, for 5 - 8 reps. I alternated every week between deads/squats/cleans. In my opinion it would be too tough on my body to do all 3 in one workout, unless i do a set for each, which equals to 3 sets for lower and back. but again it will take time in the gym to put weight on and off, and i dont want to spend too much time in the gym.

it probably will get very noisy. I'm training to about 3 - 6 reps, so i can hold onto the bar. But i'm sure after i pass a certain weight i'll have to drop them eventually.

The gym traffic usually decreases by the time I get in there so it wouldn't be a huge deal. I'd like to try them.

LOL @ you bodybuilder types.

Heaven forbid you actually do a lot of sets, and do cleans and squats in one session!

Yeah. The only way to really resolve this conflict is for all of the power lifters to try and deadlift a a greased up bodybuilder while they are curling the pink dumbbells.

1st set 12 with no weight just to get the motion.
then do like 2 more sets of 10
