quick question......as a couple of you know, I have not been feeling too hot for the past almost week, now. well i think i'm about to come down with a cold.
if i go to the gym, and do a hardcore cardio session (or at least as hardcore as i can handle) do you think I can bring on a full-blown illness?
(logic - if i get sick, i can better, if i don't get sick, i will sit and fight it off and feel like crap for longer.)
any ideas?

That's an absolutely awful idea.

Why don't you just cross your fingers and hope you get some nice anthrax mail?

no no no....my body is already fighting off some sort of bug. but in fighting it off it's draining the hell out of me.
my thinking is, by doing the cardio, i can wear my resistance down enough so that i actually get sick, and then i can proceed to getting better again. see my point?

Hardcore cardio?
Oxymoron.
If it's a head cold, I'd go.
Fever? Take the day off.

and shut up about the hardcore cardio bit paulie. *lol* ps - i'm not masochistic enough to drag my butt to the gym with a fever. that would be hardcore. and stupid.

If I "wanted" to get sick I'd go to a night club and let the cigarette smoke in the air do in my upper respiratory tract. I turned down going to see a band at Billy Bob's last weekend because I didn't an upper respiratory infection. Happens every time.

Ahh, that's nothing that about 120 mg of pseudoephedrine can't fix up. That or some stuffed jalapenos!

Batter the Vit C.
8g a day 1000mg every 2 hours.

If you have been batteling something and want to get a cold, why not just treat it like a cold in the first place  Take it easy, you can forget a few things, or do them in a few days, get some extra sleep, drink fluids, and if you have to call in sick to work. Better yet why not just go to the Dr?

ALA is the best antioxidant you can take.
And the most expensive as well.. :D
At last you can stick to drinking loads of green tea and take some vitC.
Btw,8g?

because i'm not quirte sick yet allie. I've been taking it easy and hitting the vit c, and echinacea and so on and so forth....but i still feel like crap, and i'm not sick yet.
i would much rather have it come to crisis, so i can feel a bit better, take the sudafed like delphi said (mamma's cure for everything btw - that and gatorade, sometimes cipro) and get back to normal.
i'm half wondering if the ephedrine in my ECA is actually keeping me from getting full on sick, seeing as this is a headcold.
anyways, i feel much much better today. not quite as ******ed as yesterday.

If you feel like crap, you're already sick (there's already an infection of some sort), whether or not symptoms are in full bloom. I agree with Allie.

Go lick hospital floors if you want to get sick...Tryska I expected more from you than this thread...if your body is battling it then perhaps there are things you can do to influence the fight against the cold...not aid the cold against you. Just drown in vitamin c, have a neocitran or something and get a good nights sleep. Bundle up so you sweat profusely and you should be good in a day.
or you can do it your way...and somehow try to weakin your bodily defenses and instead of feelin kinda sick...feel really sick and not be able to do anything for a couple days...and then gradually start feeling better again...which is sorta the stage you are at anyway...
pffft...dumb thread... tuttut

oy vey.
sometimes tis best to surrender as therein lies victory.
i personally find a good old-fashioned cold to be quite cleansing. Also, i don't get sick often....but the way i look at it, i would rather go through the drama of being sick, so that i can knit back stronger, and quickly from it, then let my body fight it and fight it and fight it, and wear itself out, only to fall sicker then if i had just given in in the first place.
in any case..the cardio did me a good, cuz i'm feeling downright normal right now. much better then i have in a week. maybe those sniffles i had yesterday afternoon when i created this thread were my cold. *lol*

Your reasoning is wrong. A hard workout won't make your cold go away quicker, it will only make your body more susceptible to a bacterial infection or a virus (which is what I assume you mean by wanting to get sick).
If you don't get a hard workout your symptons will, most likely, go away quicker.
IMO, it is better to have a sniffle for a week then a full blown cold for a week.
Think about it logically... why would making your body more susceptible to a cold make it go away quicker?
Tryska

actually..your understanding of my reasoning was wrong. lowering my susceptibility so that i got sick is exactly what i intended.
as for why it would make it go away quicker...once my body reaches crises and i have an acute infection, my immune system will kick in to fight that infection, and you get the sweats, and phlegm and all the other lovely stuff which is your body fighting it. At that point i would start taking whatever herbs or meds i need to. (i don't believe in treating while asymptomatic). From personal experience with my own body, i bounce back rather quickly once i get sick. So i can waste 2 weeks slogging on and trying to fight it off, or i can get sick and have it done in a week. time is precious to me. i choose get sick and get it over with. and then i have the perk of lasting immunity to said bug.

Hmm... well I can't argue with the fact that it works for you, but I would say it wouldn't work for people in general.
If you exert yourself as a cold is coming on you are putting yourself at greater risk of extended illness, not hurrying the pace of the cold. The reason for this is because your body produces antibodies early in the early stages of a cold to combat the infection. If you rob your immune system of its ability to produce these antibodies (by overexertion or improper nutrition), your body will not be able to fight the disease off as efficiently. Your body doesn't kick into overdrive, it simply sacrifices your immune system to build up the cellular metabolism to fight off the infection. This, in effect, weakens your immune system and actually INCREASES your required recovery time.

Hmm... if I were you i would take some meds and go take a nap :)
However, about 2 weeks ago, I was getting pretty sick, BUT the cold cleared up like 3 days after some hardcore squats :D (it was a headcold, NO FEVER OR SNEEZING)

Hon I'm one of the people who hates getting sick because I have a ****ty immune system on top of it I'm allergic to penicillian. So with substute drugs my body has begun to build up a resistance to it. So I do all things to avoid getting sick. Usually the Dr even asks me what meds I want, so if any of you get sick in the future urge your Dr to try Zithromax for you. It's 5 days worth of meds, and only six pills. Well worth asking instead of being on meds for 21 or 30 days.

wow. i stay the heck away from antibiotics specifically because of the resistance factor.
guess i'm lucky to have a strong immune system. but then again, i'm thinking it's because the first few years of my life i got exposed to all kinds of third-world beasties. and my mom breast-fed so i'm sure that helped too.
