I used a BMR calculator and the number I came up with seemed to be far far, too high.

I'm 158lbs, 5'8 and 19. Activity wise there's some walking to classes and walking at work and then the lifting.

I want to bulk, but I was looking to find out my BMR so I could calculate calories from there, say + 300 or so a day

You can find your active maintenance cals by multiplying your bodyweight by 15 -17 depending on your metabolism speed. High metablosim x by 17, low x by 15, normal x 16.Then add 300 cals or so and see if you gain off that. If you do stick with it if not you know you have to add.

Another simpler method is to multiply you're bodyweight by 20. That should be sufficient for bulking. Then monitor to see progress.

These methods may not be quite as accurate as what you were looking at doing. Ive read about the first one in a diet/nutrition book so it should be reputable, and the second on i just heard from a friend but he knows a lot about this stuff and it has worked for both of us.

just make sure to keep checking to see if you're gaining, if not add cals.
