View Full Version : How many cans of tuna have you eaten in a day?

02-21-2001, 02:40 PM
I was just making a tuna sandwich, and was thinking if I could stand it, I could eat 5 cans and get almost all my protein from food. Anyone ever lived off tuna for a while? I just don't like cooking at all, I'm almost 30 and I don't think I'll ever like it! But I do like to eat :)

ive purchased a good amount of tuna lately, and id have to say, more than 2 cans a day would be absolutely disgusting. i can barely get the second can down :)

i also read on this board that you shouldnt consume too many cans a day due to high levels of mercury?

forgot who said it :)

There is alot of warning lately because of the mercury in the tuna. Experts recomend not to eat more than one a week!
However, being the Tuna Master's Assistant, and having gone to Tuna University, i would say you can eat more, just not every day, take a couple of days away from tuna once in a while, just to be safe.

Do you eat tuna every other day or something?
and where does the mercury come from? that may be a naive question, but its a question right? hehe

02-21-2001, 06:18 PM
I dont know were it comes from, I just know that Tuna is high in mercury :)

For a barbeque back when i was in high school, my mom made this huge batch of tuna fish sandwich filler, out of basically tuna, celery, hot sauce, and a tiny bit of olive oil. She made it for 16 people; used eight cans of tuna. it rained that day. We canceled the barbeque. I ate the whole bowl.

And that was my little story.

i believe the albacore tuna has less mercury in it.

Tuna gives me bad breath for a while. People ask if i was eating it an hour later...

I can't stand Tuna..

sorry Frankster, you don't have to worry about me touching the tuna!

White Albacore tuna (smaller variety) is low in mercury but more expensive. 2 cans per day should be max.

Its not wise to consume same food in huge quantities. Food allergy or indigestion may result. And you would lack some nutrients as well because you are missing other food.

i've eaten about 5 cans a day for a couple weeks...i eat an average of 2-3.

I'm pretty sure the mercury is a result from pollution in the oceans.

Here's an article from January 15, 2001:

Good then, more for me :D

The mercury comes from the oceans!!

The bigger the tuna the more mercury they will have in them. And since the tuna that is used from our consumption is large, we get the shaft!!

i guess i should state that i actually dont mind tuna too much, the trick is to blank out the poon smell. i usually use bbq sauce, lemon, mustard, or hot sauce.

I loooooooooove tuna!! If my g/f would let me eat it when i'm with her, i'd eat it every day(I don't wanna hear any sick jokes either). Oh well, from the sounds of it, i need a break every now and then.

SORRY for bringing this back up, but im a tuna lover.
i usually eat 2-3 cans a day, but i do different stuff with it. Their always real easy to make:
Good Tuna sandwich
1 can tuna, 1 boiled egg, some mayo, a little relish, and spoon of sugar on bread

Tuna noodle cassorole
just prepare 1 box of mac and cheese like the box says, add 1 can tuna and sprinkle with bread crumbs and parmesan cheese.(you can put a little ketchup for a little more flavor)

tuna pasta Salad
betty crocker has all kinds of flavor of instant pasta salad thats pretty good you just bool the noodles and mix in the seasoning the just mix in your can o' tuna

i got alot more if anyone want em these are just my main tuna meals

Looks like Frankster has a new best mate.

04-16-2001, 12:52 PM
Hey Mates

not sure if anyone cares, but the Mercury in Tuna comes from the baitfish (smelt, shiners, shad, shrimp etc.) that they feed on. It works its way through the food chain from the bottom feeders that pick it up from sediment in the oceans. After that, a bigger fish eats the bottom feeder, then a bigger firsh eats that one, etc etc etc till it reaches the tuna. The Hg is transferred from one fish to another along the way. Personally, I wouldn't worry too much aobut the Hg content of tuna. Just don't eat a hundred cans a week or anything, and you should be alright.

04-16-2001, 04:06 PM
ya , wassup with that? you wannna be my mate FUTURE SEAL ? :D

I read your post, and almost gagged at the thought of adding mustard to tuna. But after about ten minutes, curiosity got the best of me, and i went and cracked a can, and added some good ol mustard to it. I was really impressed! its actaully really tasty! nice change from the other crap I usually mix into it to break the monotany of tuna :-)

Anyway, thanx alot for the idea
