get a good diet down and you shouldn't need any "energy" bars before your workout

I always have a protein shake with some creating/glutamine mixed in along with some carbs, such as oatmeal, or a bagel. It works for me. You may not need the creatine/glutamine if you're not lifting heavy or gettin really serious about things.
