Would reducing calories/day by 500 or so be an effective way of cutting?

Just curious, since cardio can sometimes burn muscle.

Question #1 - yes, for some people, that's enough to drop bodyfat.

Point on cardio "burning muscle" - not necessarily, depends on the intensity, and a bunch of other factors.

Depends if it makes you fall below your activity calories and basal metabolism. Going below or at basal is a gaurenteed way to lose weight, but if you're just thinking of calories, bye bye any muscle you may have gained.
So yes, drop calories when cutting and cardio does you good, just make sure you get the protein in there when doing so.
