Does anyone here get their back shaved? I was wondering how they do it and how much. How much is laser hair removal and things like that?

I have a few stray hairs on my traps and upper/posterior shoulders. I pull them out (shaving makes them grow back thicker and faster). Not enough back hair here to consider actual treatments, though, so I can't help you.

I have countable stray back hair on the top of my back, it looks very strange.

My freshman RA had more back hair than I have on my whole body. His mom paid for laser removal but apparently it's a several step process. I would be very hesitant to shave due to thickness of the hairs when they grow back.

Wow, more high school urban legends, lemme straighten you out:

SHAVING HAIR NEITHER MAKES IT GROW BACK FASTER NOR THICKER, IT IS A PHYSICAL IMPOSSIBILITY.

Please stop saying that it does, it gets quite tiresome hearing it after awhile.

I shave damn near everything. But I can't reach around to the back, it's not too bad anyway. Laser hair removal seems to work quite well and usually doesnt cost TOO much. You should be able to get your entire back done for probably 4-700 dollars (takes a few sessions). That's my plan eventually.

The hair doesn't grow in thicker per se but the original hair has pointed and tapered at the end, correct? When you shave it, it grows with a blunt end, correct? Therefore, although it may be an illusion, it appears the hair is thicker. By no means does more hair grow back, that's just silly.

PhilsterT
04-26-2005, 06:25 PM
Okay. But why does it have a pointed end in the first place?

Laser hair removal's only between $400-700? I thought it was closer to 5,000. And, it doesn't ever grow back?

I'm a teen now, it's not a problem, but I have a little on my lower back (I can't really tell if I have any other hair on my back because it's not big enough to show yet). I have a little on my shoulders (VERY little) so it's not a problem.

hair on your body is normal for MEN. sure i shave my balls and my face but nothing else. ive seen guys shave their arms and get ripped apart for it. i dont see why guys are so afraid of having hair. most girls i know have told me that its better for a guy to have the hair than to try shaving it. sorry for all you guys that shave your arms/legs but i dont understand it. are you going to do it for the rest of your life? shaving your chest is alright if you are going to the beach or something but...in my experience girls just dont like when guys shave body hair.

I don't shave anything except my chest (does anyone else use a razor?). But, I was thinking if I was at the beach it would look hella trippy if I had a hairy back (I don't know) and a clean front. Haha.

I don't shave my arms or legs, but I really hate having so much nut hair and hair on my stomach. I used nair for men a few weeks ago on my stomach and the area a little above my balls (oh and on my ass). It works well, but you definitely don't want that **** getting on your balls, it would eat them! Also, while it is an effective way to get rid of hair, it's not that much better than shaving. You'll have less itch and less pimples, but the hair doesn't grow back that much slower than when you shave.

Also, I used the stuff during school, which meant in my dorm, which has 25 guys sharing 1 bathroom (it's one of those big bathrooms). It was quite humerous for my "podmates" when they found me using nair.

Nah, in the shower. My dorm is seperated into 4 "pods," each holding 25 students (3 pods were girls, very good year). It was a very nice, fully carpeted dorm with big rooms, but instead of having bathrooms that is shared among 2-8 people, all 25 of us shared one bathroom. This was nice, because it meant the janitors cleaned up all our ****, but you definitely got no privacy (besides shower curtains, of course).

yes... use the cream... DO A TEST SPOT. it's marketed toward african american men but it works wonders on body hair of all types. everyone responds differently, but of all the creams i've ever heard about, this one is most broadly acceptable and has the fewest instances of bad experience.

this is only a guess but what i've put together in my head is this:

afro-type hair is difficult to shave... shaving often leads to bumps and ingrowns. if a product can work in a more difficult situation like this, it's that much more effective on caucasian-type hair.

i don't know if anyone wants or needs to know this, but this product is highly recommended and used in "adult" industries. this is how i first learned about it and every person i've recommended it to has been at least satisfied and often highly impressed. as i said before though... EVERYONE'S DIFFERENT and it may not work for you... i'm just going from personal experience.

So shave the leg and arm hair too...

You said you didn't mind the leg/arm hair, not that you had to keep it. I agree with you, depending on the amount of hair you have on the parts you choose not to shave, it can make you look pretty weird. Honestly, for all those people who think it's gay to shave leg/arm hair, don't you think you look kind of odd with a hairless chest/back and a forest growing on your arms/legs?

The thing I've found with girls is this. Most don't like hair, so they'd prefer you to be hairless. However, for some reason they blindly assume that you are naturally that way. The second they hear you shaved or waxed or whatever is when the criticism begins. Quite frankly I don't see what the difference is, but being "natural" is important to a lot of girls.

The thing with waxing is your skin is usually irritated and red for a couple days after, then the hair starts coming back in slowly in 1-2 weeks anyway, so really you're only getting 10 or so days where you look "good". Maybe that's worth the pain and cost of getting it done to some people, but having done both that and shaving, I'll stick to shaving.

I tired shaving but couldn't deal with the stubble so now I "manscape": I trim chest and stomach hair a bit (not terribly short). Manscaping below the belt is limited to when I feel bored. lol

Built,

Have your hubby do it. I think you will prefer them shaved once you inspect them closely. I certainly don't like the upkeep shaving requires but I much prefer others to do it.

"manscape". I like that word. My gay friends always use the funniest terminology, too. "Manscaping" is pretty much what I do, although I'm lucky enough to have only leg, arm, underarm, pubic, and little chest/stomach hair. Using clippers, I recommend a #2 all over leaving a #3 for underarms and happy trail. Being a former model, this is (was at least) the accepted norm. Shaving the boys and Mr. Johnson all the way the his base is a must.

go ahead and shave your body hair. its there naturally and should be left there. thats my opinion take it or leave it
Are you also against your wife/gf shaving? Are you against balding men shaving their heads completely? Do you shave your natural facial hair?

Ah, ok. Thanks for clarifying it. Good call on avoiding the unibrow. Plucking can be a bitch but after a few times it's not as painful (speaking from experience) and it's more precise than operating with a razor (speaking from experience).

girls shaving legs/underarms is a whole hell of a lot different than a guy shaving his legs/arms. and alot of the time i let my beard grow, but even when i do shave my face, its still not comparable to a man shaving his legs. i dont see why epeople insist on arguing about this. men shaving legs is not appropriate in my mind. and every guy iver ever seen shave his arms/legs has been ridiculed by most guys and girls alike that i know.

But that is entirely arbitrary. There is no good reason for the double standard. Besides, if we go back a few posts your argument for men leaving their hair intact was that it's naturally there therefore it should be left alone. You gave no caveats where that may not be the case so I assumed you were a pro-hair kinda guy. Turns out you were just pulling that one out because it fit at the moment. So much for sound argument.

You're hardly arguing- you're making irrational statements. BBs choose to be hairless so they can better show off their definition. Swimmers shave to shave time off the clock. Some shave because they like the esthetics of smoothness. I think all are valid reasons for hair removal.

Not doing something because some may laugh at you is probably the least sound reason of all. Most people laugh at bodybuilders, especially female bodybuilders. I don't see you arguing against Built doing her thing, or getfit, or Tryska.

After reading this thread, i shaved my pits and manliness...just for the hell of it. It was time to shower, and I had nothing better to do.

Manliness shaving is overrated, prickly, and nearly impossible to get 100% smooth...so that is the last time I do it. I'll still manscape, though. I'm sick of pubes getting all entwined when I sit down, causing me to yelp.

Pits are on permanent lawn-care now...my pit-sweat action has gone down 90%. I've even forgottent o wear deodorant a couple times lately, and it's no big deal..no sweat=not as much chance to become offensive. I had been manscaping the pits for a couple years anyway because of that, but i figured shaving them would be painful on regrowth..but it's not bad.

I picked up one of these little battery clippers at WalMart for < $9
http://www.jr.com/JRProductPage.process?Product=3953099

Great for crampt, sensitive, & difficult areas. Seems impossible to cut yourself. Doesn't do thick hair too well, but trims about as close as shaving.
The battery lasts forever too.

Im a former racer and have recently started riding and shaving again.
Go ahead,make fun.

Riding for me is a hell of a lot more fun than sitting on a bike or running on a treadmill in the gym for my cardio work.

Some racers claim that it is more aerodynamic and less wind resistance.I suppose when your competing at the olympic level or above, any advantage you can gain whether actual or perceived is beneficial.

The real reason (for me anyway) is infection prevention.

After a nasty 45 mph asphalt ballet (reminder to self....dont crash!) I had a nasty puss oozing infection from having my body hair, gravel and dirt ground into and under my skin.

Believe me, theres nothing like the feeling of having a Dr. in the emergency room scrub an infected area with green soap and a stiff brush, especially when its on your butt cheek/hip area!

IMHO the being made fun of was well worth it as a price to pay for not ever having to endure that experiance again.

I checked out the laser cost yesterday.
First treatment, it's all gone, but about 2/3 comes back slowly over 2-4 weeks. One third is gone forever because of the 3 growth phases of hair and laser kills only hair in the one phase. Repeat treatments until all re-growth is gone. This may take over 6 times, but with each, the returning hair is less and less as well as finer.

Full chest is $255 (30 min)
Abs only is $85 (15 min)
Arse is $225 (30 min)
Privates including scrotum is $150 (30 min)

It's not supposed to itch or cause ingrowns. Beforehand you are to clipper or shave the area. Skin pigment (tan) is not a good thing because the laser light goes to the darker material, thus zapping your skin vs the hair.

:edit: this wil not work with blonde, red.. light colored hair

I'm told it feels like a rubberband snap; a fairly strong snap.

Seriously though, I can't imagine a laser being shot at your genitals is a good thing. It's really not that expensive though. $900 vs years of shaving in that "touchy" area. Seems reasonable to me.

ColoradoBeef
06-09-2005, 11:00 AM
Right, I'm seriously thinking about the "touchy" areas for this.
Spread the treatments (payments) over a year & I'm done forever. I can trim or shave my chest/legs/arms as needed/desired.
Some places will do a package deal, maybe with payments too.

Well, it's not necessarily how bad you are to begin with. A lot of it has to do with genetics. The only real good candidates for lazer hair removal are white males with coarse black hair.

As a matter a fact, electrolysis is supposedly a much cheaper, yet better, alternative for permanent hair removal.

I've heard the thing about white males with dark hair being the best candidates.

I can't necessarily agree with your other point. I'm not an expert on the subject, but it would only make sense that those who are REALLY hairy are less likely to completely be-rid of that hair.

it's all perspective

when i was in my 20s (1988-1997) we'd never discuss all the things people do now days

at a party recently, well into the Crown Royal, several of us (2/3 married couples) stood around the kitchen and discussed privates shaving (guys and girls)
i really wonder how many guys don't shave it

masturbation is a reasonably open topic now too, it used to be that admitting it brought a 'gay' label, now if you don't admit it, well... you're probably lying

the times, they are a-changin'
now "if you got it, flaunt it" rules seem to apply, nice chest? shave it; nice arms....
feel like shaving your sac, go ahead
like it natural? good too
back hair? that's always free to go
