View Full Version : Stifflegged deadlifts

As you guys know I don't like traditional deadlifts. I am now thinking of putting hamstring on back and chest day. I have always done leg curls and today was my first time ever trying sld's. When I was doing them I felt that it worked my lower back much more than it did my hamstrings. Is this normal. They felt like a great back movement. I have a hard time believing that this is a great exercise for the hams even though I know they are. The reason I say this is that your legs don't really move during sld's compared to leg curls which have a big range of motion.

The hamstring muslces are also involved with movement around the hips, which is why they are involved in the stdl. They are primarily involved in the very bottom portion of the movement. As the movement progresses, the lower back becomes strongly involved. You are correct in your empirical observation, a leg curl will take the hamstring muscles through a fuller range of motion and are therefore a better exercise for them. The stdl is a better overall exercise because it involves more than one muscle group.

Chris- I like how you put that. You said the curl was a better"hamstring" exercise, but the sldl was a better overall exercise.
Darcy- make sure you don't go down too low with the weight. You must not round your back on the lift and for most people this means coming down to only about mid-shin level. Also, learn to feel your hams working. Even on bent rows, you should feel the hams tighten to help stabilize.

Hey Darcy, I have found that having a slight bend in the knees has worked for me. Make sure you have a flat back and as earlier mentioned do not go to low.

I work out chest and back on tuesday, legs on thursday and Shoulders + arms on Saturday for specific reasons. What day should I add them to? By the way I don't do traditional deadlifts on back day.

Try having a wider stance and point your toes outward a little. When you bend down with this stance, you should feel ur glutes or hams stretch. Keep adjusting ur stance until u feel the stretch, and that will be your good stance. Keep knees straight, but not locked if it hurts.
Do them on leg day b/c you will be sore for days. The first time i did these (2x8x185), i din't feel anythng right after my workout, but thru next few days I felt the hams hurt!

Chicken_Daddy,
Damn...I was trying to figure out how I got that PR  Now I know! Maybe I should have a couple'a those the night before each leg day huh?
So Rob (nice name), if i drink a little of that fine malt beverage the night before my chest day I can get out of this current rut i'm in. If it helps I'll let you know.

not to start anything, but didnt you just recently post that you deadlifted 585 pounds. yet you cannot even come close to stiff-dead lifting 305. seems a little off to me.
if i am wrong in this, i apologize.

Hey devastation, thanks for being respectful about questioning me, unlike others. I can hit 305 if I had to but becasue of heavy deading through the years, I have a twisted pelvic, which makes my lowerback sore with most bending motions and for me to hit that poundage all the time would be suicide. I generally go no higher than 225 and that's if I'm feeling strong. You see in the deadlift I'm pushing me leggs through the fu**** ground and my back is braced, whereas with sld's your back is way to exposed and for me INJURY!!!!!!! So hope this answers your skeptisism. Later bro

So, the deadlift, which you say that you want to promote because it is such a good lift, has produced a degenerative problem in your pelvis. Sounds like everyone should deadlift so they will be able to not even bend over to pick up their grandchildren. Not being able to come close to a stiff of 305 while being able to pull 585 on the deadlift sounds very suspect to me as well. Once again, I don't even perform the deadlift and I can pull 305 in the stiff without even blinking an eye. Oh yeah, I injured my lower back in my early 20s and have no problem performing the exercise. Seems like the stress on the pelvis using 585 lbs would be rather large, seems like it might aggravate that injury. Hmmmmm.......

Hey it's the Mason man again, throwing the question out there, do you know what a twisted pelvis is pal? and I am not saying that I condone everyone going heavy, but with exception to the squat give me another exercise that builds overall strength and mass for that matter, better? You don't seem to like me and I really don't care, don't know you or where you are from. Like I said, if you want to clear this up, please buy a ticket to the Arnold would love to talk shop and listen to all your great advice and you can take more shots at me. Hell I believe that there would be a deadlift platform there, I want to see you do the 545 for 3 reps, and while were on the subject my PB is 605 for a single, like I said leave it alone mr mason, and as for blinking an eye about 305 for sld's I could do it while eating a sandwich I was just paying a compliment to someone, about there PB on sld's you should try it sometime. You see "a wise man questions himself, a fool others"
Take care all and see you in the chat room

You should really try to get some consistency to your stories. I don't dislike you as a person, as I don't know you personally. However, I don't like bullshi* posts either. No, I won't be attending the Arnold, yes I do have a job and a life outside of this forum. I am quite sure you will be there ! Your posts have major logical inconsistencies, that is what I am pointing out. A wise man may question himself, and a fool others, but winners have self confidence and I would rather be a winner than a "wise" man. A lot of "wise" men throughout history have failed miserably.

Mr. Mason, a life outside this forum? you have 358 posts, how do you have time to do anything else? What was said about wise man failing is true, many have, but name one winner who is not wise in his own sense. I guarantee you can't, from Gates to Jordan, to Churchill and FDR, all had failed at one time or another, but with persistance and not questioning anybody but themselves are the epitomy of success. But I guess you already knew that. I'm done replying to your threads and please do not reply to anymore of mine unless it is constructive critisism and not taking shots. As for my life I have a real job investing in real estate and personal training, so I guess were even there. Really would love to meet sometime and talk shop though, (oops, an inconsistency) Take care and wish you nothing but success with your life outside this forum.

I can see the difference in the SLDL and the deadlift under ONE condition. If Fergy can't stiffleg the 305.. But he can deadlift the 585.. Surely he's using sumo style? I have a hard time believing that difference in a conventional DL. The conventional and SL styles are similar in many aspects. The sumo, though, is quite different. Ferg, do you sumo that 585 or pull it conventionally??? Or do you simply not go heavy in the SLDL to avoid injury?

Mr. Cobra,
I can easily do 305, I was I guess I was understating and giving a compliment to the person who hit there PB. I have tried Sumo Style and I can't touch the weight I do conventional. I pulled my lower back badly during the Natural Nationals in 96 (i did finish the competition took 3rd, hope noone thinks I'm bragging) and I have had to watch bending movements. I know some of my posts are long but I have stated that I go up to 225 for reps, 305 would be cake, but I didn't want to stir up any crap. I seem to be getting a little scrutnity, when all I was trying to do was pay the compliment to the person who 305.

Ferg, don't worry, man. There are alot of people on this site that can't just say 'good job'. Don't worry about it. Just go with the flow and do your best. Impressive deadlift, BTW.
