My names Kevin Majoros but for some reason everyone calls me Jack. I'm 17 and first things first incase you havnt noticed im short, 5'4" to be exact and thats exactly why i lift! My father is 6'2" my older brother is 6'3" my little brother is 5'11" and in some kind of cruel twist of fate i got the height genetics of my 5'3" mother. Before you say things like "your still growing" i'll save you some time, no im not. Dont take this all the wrong way though because i dont mind one bit, i rather enjoying being as tall as i am.

On to the weightlifting aspect of my life. I started lifting weights back in the begining of the ninth grade and started powerlifting a year and half ago. I found that while my friends were good at drawing or skating i was good at moving heavy objects. Since then i've been determined to become as strong as i possibly can and be able to lift with the best of them. It's been a rough road but im slowly achieving pretty good strength for my body weight. I'll post routines and progress in getting to a 405 lb bench press by the end of the year while staying under 200 lbs. Dont get me wrong im not neglecting my squats or dl's but the bench press is my best and favorite power lift and those delicious 4 plates are my current goal. At the moment (June 6, 2005) my bench press is at 315 at a body weight of 150 lbs.

Its late sunday night and monday is an off day so i'll start posting my routine and diet on tuesday which is my power chest day.

I'd also just like to say that im very glad to have found a forum like this, great environment and nice helpfull people!

must be nice having short arms

KevinStarke
06-06-2005, 12:43 PM
Haha, yah it doest help with the ROM but trust me being short is not a big advantage in lifting. Granted being really tall is, im sure more annoying when it comes to that extreme ROM but it hasnt been easy packing muscle in to this little body.

Update: Personally best today for reps of 225 lbs, got 15 solid reps

Kevin, you got some good lifts. I can't believe you're pulling this stuff off at 150lbs only. Anyway, Ed Coan one of the greatest powerlifters is only 5'6"... maybe you can be the next Coan. Anyway, have you tried board presses with a close grip to improve your bench? I'm going to start hitting the boards hard.

Kev uh Jack, Have you seen the strongman contest, one of those guys is like 5'2" can't remember his name.

drew

Short stature = great mechanical advantage for squats.

Louie Simmons is also 5'6"

KevinStarke
06-07-2005, 07:16 AM
haha oh i second that comment on the advantage in squats. My ROM is nothing on squats i've got my stubby hungarian legs hah. Coan is a god i'd love to follow in his footsteps. Some guy just broke the 2000 lb mark at 165... thats my all time goal. I know its a little far fetched but im still young and im real determined. I've taken a couple videos i'll post soon, my 225 lb reps and im gonna tape my max too since i know alot of nay sayers that dont believe i can bench what i can. I really wanna devote some time to my squats but i had a few knee problems in the past but its clearing up and the doc said i should be able to go more all out on my legs in a few weeks then its time to destroy my legs like its my job.

Today was a really good chest day for me despite a few flaws in my plans to get some good footage. I wanted to get a clip of me maxing out and i made 4 attempts. First time i had my lifting partner (Nate) film and i asked a random guy to spot me, bad idea. I asked the guy not to touch the bar unless i say i need help and what happened when i got the bar halfway up, he grabbed the bar and helped. I waited a bit and made a second attempt, this time having Nate spot me. I asked another random guy to film and even set it all up for him, all he had to do was hit the button and point. I say "you ready?", he says "Go" and i push a rep out. I go to check the video out and genious boy held the button down which started and then stopped the freaking video. I made two more attempts but was just a little too burned out to get it. I got a couple videos of some dumbell lifts though and i'll post those asap. I'll make sure to get a video of me maxing next week. That aside this is how my day went today.

Cool vids, you look pretty strong. I'm very curious to see the 315 bench and the 405x2 squat ... any chance of getting those vids up?

KevinStarke
06-09-2005, 07:33 PM
The 315 i will definitelly have up by next week. The squatting i'll try to get as soon as possible but i havnt been able to squat for two weeks but i'll get it up asap.

Arnold Press -
45 x 10

65 x 7

Seated Dumbell Press -

Hanging Crunches -
BW x 15
BW x 12 (Hands slipped)
BW x 15

*Stretched*

Decided not to go too crazy and push my luck with my shoulder. For once it didnt hurt at all not even with the 80's. I know thats not much but ever since i started having my shoulder problems i havnt been able to do **** with it. Ive been icing my shoulder every day though and doing plenty of rotator cuff exercises and i think its finally getting better (knock on wood). I'd love to get my shoulders back to the strength they used to be at.

06-10-2005, 10:17 PM
Thanks. My dad was real strong till he got hit by a car a few years back, had a metal shoulder for a while hah. My older brother is 6'2" and has great growth potential but he's just lazy and gets fatter by the day, loves his cake. Bleh, to each their own i suppose

JSully
06-10-2005, 11:15 PM
You're very strong and naturally lean. You'll be one to watch in the competition, keeping your bodyweight low while the strength gets up there.

Great job on the 225x15, at only 17yrs old that's incredible, and at 152lbs bw that's even more awesome.

DB Benching your own bodyweight in each hand, that's going to take some time. LOL. I'm 230 and I can't imagine even doing 75% of that in each hand. Maybe 150's for 3-4 reps but that's about all. I'd rather hit 150's for db shoulder press. :D

Anyways, good luck bro!

KevinStarke
06-10-2005, 11:25 PM
Thanks man, i definitelly wanna compete one day and its not hard staying at my weight, my strength has been going up but even if i tried i never gain weight. My left shoulder is shotty so i cant do much on shoulder press but i can dumbell bench 130's for 1, maaaaaybe 2 on a solid day so hopefully one day i can get those 150's up haha. One can hope right.

Props on the head too man, im a shaver myself

Bald men are strong men.

Kevin, looking good. I LOVE Arnold Press.

If you do your DB shoulder presses while holding them out in front of you (instead of to the sides) you will work the same muscles, but put your rotator cuffs in a much more natural position (they won't hurt). Can't do as much weight because of the different leverage involved, but it's a great substitute.

along with the meathead beanie! lmao, the one that comes down just over our eyelids so can see but people cant see our eyes.

:evillaugh

On a side note, I'm still amazed at your strength at only 150lbs. That's incredible. My bench has dropped down to 400ish during this cut and I feel weak, you're hitting 315 at 150 BW, and I'm at like 225 only doing 400. Dammit!

lol... no I'll go off and cry somewhere

Hey Kevin, there's an APA BP/DL meet in Norwich CT on the 26th. Kinda late notice, but you could probably smoke the 148's in both open and 16-17 classes.

I'm just hoping to get my first pull accepted. lol.

KevinStarke
06-11-2005, 08:54 AM
Thanks for the advice on shoulder presses drew i'll definitelly have to try that! Also that apa bp/dl meet sounds absolutely perfect because the reason im not competed at the moment is that my knees are giving my problems when i squat but my dead lift and bench are fine. I just migh tlook that up because i can drop 2-3 lbs no problem, just take a big dump and dont drink as much water.

HAHA you rock the beanie too jake! i wear one pretty much all winter, bandana in the summer so i dont burn my pale irish head.

Kevin, pre-registration is over, but you can still show up the day of the meet and lift (it costs a little more). You can find info about it on www.apa-wpa.com but your best bet is to e-mail Donna, the meet director at djslaga@yahoo.com

The meet is at World Gym in Norwich on the 26th. Weigh in is 2-4 on the 25th and the meet starts at 9:15 on Sunday. Let me know if you're going.

You'll also need a wrestling singlet to lift in...

haha seriously? gahhh.. where can i get one of those

KevinStarke
06-11-2005, 12:07 PM
BENCH PRESS COMPETITION: ONE PIECE LIFTING SUIT OR SPANDEX BIKE PANTS OF THE TYPE
THAT ARE SKIN TIGHT. IF ONE PIECE LIFTING SUIT IS WORN THE STRAPS MUST BE WORN OVER
THE SHOULDERS AT ALL TIMES WHILE LIFTING. IF SPANDEX BIKE SHORTS ARE WORN THE
LIFTERS TEE SHIRT MUST BE TUCKED IN AT ALL TIMES WHILE LIFTING.

Those are the rules of costume for benching but deadlift requires a damn singlet... grrr maybe i'll just do bench

KevinStarke
06-11-2005, 03:05 PM
Didnt work out today but i helped my dad extend the brick walk out back. Had to move an entire cube (500 bricks) by hand and a huge mound of stone dust that i ended up farmer walking in compound buckets to the backyard. It ended up actually being a workout all its own, not to mention i was sweating like monkey. Hot and humid as usual here.

good luck in the comp. Do a 3-4 day carb deplete (zero carbs whatso ever, JUST protein and fat), that'll ensure you make weight. As soon as you weigh in on the 25th, hit the carbs HARDCORE!!! until about 9pm. That'll also help with your energy levels the next morning. Also have a carb filled breakfast!

Talk to one of the other powerlifters on here and they can give you tips on how to maximize your performance, making weight, etc etc.

KevinStarke
06-11-2005, 07:39 PM
Awesome thanks Jake i was wondering about dropping weight, will only end up being 4-6 lbs so shouldnt be that hard. Yah im pretty sure exactly how i should go about everything, who are some of the more experienced power lifters on the board?

Should i start the 0 carbs on the 20th or so? 21st maybe? And should i not drink too much water the day before or anything. Im extremely excited about this, especially when i saw the current 148 record haha. The only thing im worried about is making the weight, ive had to gain it before but never lose it. I have some friends on the wrestling team at my school that drop weight like its their job.

cosmicdebree88
06-12-2005, 01:36 PM

KevinStarke

I'm very excited about it, i need to drop 4-5 lbs though, should be easy enough.

JSully
06-12-2005, 02:43 PM
If the comp is on the 26th, you want to load after the weigh-in on the 25th. So you'd want to deplete the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th, then load the 25th after weigh-in.

When working out, try to deplete glycogen by doing high reps and high sets. A total of about 12 sets per body part and 12-15reps per set. Do that the first 2 days of the depletion (a full body type of workout, either 2 full body workouts, 6 sets per bodypart each day, or a upper/lower split with 12sets per bodypart) Then after weigh in, shove as much rice, bread, pizza, whatever, in your mouth as you can until bedtime, then wake up and eat a decent size breakfast.

You'll look like **** before the weigh in, but the next morning after all the carbs, you're muscles will be full and you'll have lots of energy to be ready to go!

There are a bunch of experienced powerlifters here, check out the powerlifting forum. I would make a post about pre-contest carbloading, or how to maximize performance.

All in all a pretty good workout. The first attempt at 320 i could just tell i wasnt gonna be able to get it all the way so i just brought it down to an inch or so away from my chest and then up. The second attempt i got it half way up then crapped out. I was really feeling the dumbells today but after the 120's my forearms got extremelly tight so i took a 5 minute break and stretched them out real good and they were ok after that. I wasnt going to do dips but then i found out this gym had a belt with a plate attachment so i decided to go for some weighted dips. Chest felt great after and with a week and half left before my competition im gonna start prepping to make sure im ready for that, gotta lose some weight too. Weighed in at 153 today. My brother doesnt work tomorrow so i'll have the videos up by thursday.

I had a great ammount of energy today and with the abs i super setted it going from one exercise to the other back and forth between the 6 sets. I was originally just going for bi's and tri's but i felt the need to work my back fro some reason so i just did a wee little bit o' work for it with the machine back rows and pullups. My weight isnt moving from 153 which is bugging me a bit with the competition coming up but i've been wearing a sweatshirt all day (its pretty hot here) and some of my wrestler buddies have suggested i sleep in a couple shirts and a sweatshirt so im gonna try that too, i really wanna make weight.

One thing I could never do, was real slow db bench. The set lasts like 5 minutes, and that's about 4 minutes and 15 seconds too long for me! LOL... The gym I was going to only had 125lb db's, so back when I was strong, I used to have to slow them down a good bit, like a 4 second eccentric and 3 second concentric. I'd only do 8-10 reps like that though.

Awesome workout bro! Keep it up!

WBBIRL
06-22-2005, 01:05 PM
Heh, if the records 250 then I would only go 5lbs heavier unless you get to warmup first... or if you get to have more then one attempt. My last 10th grade football weightlifting competetion, the record for a 10th grader was 245 and I had been hitting 240 consistantly... we got three attempts and no warmup. Started at 225 just to be sure I had a sucessful lift to get numbers twoards my big three. Went to 245 to see how well things would go and barely got it up, but it was a sucessful try. Then went to 250 and failed to lock out. But its all good, even though I only tied the bench record I got the big three record with a total of 1195..... the old record was 1050 and i wanted 1200 so bad.

But you know your own body better then I do, just thought Id share my experience.

KevinStarke
06-22-2005, 08:55 PM
soba - thanks
cphafner - nope, moving in to an extremely nice rent free house with a bunch of my buddies for a year. I'm gonna work, take some college prep courses, get certified as a personal trainer and most of all train seriously in powerlifting and do a lot of competing. After a year i'll have plenty of money and have partied enough that i am ready to hit the books, then im going to CCSU.

The deal with the house is that my friends parents bought a house to retire in but they arnt retiring for some time so they are gonna let the bunch of us live there rent free for as long as we want, only staying a year myself but im pretty sure thats the general plan. We have to pay for cable/internet provider and electricity if we go too nuts with it, obviously food as well.

LOL...This conjures up a funny memory from my graduation...

We were all walking out after they proclaimed us "graduates," and were leaving in the same lines we entered in. Someone way up front tossed his cap, and it sliced through the air like a frisbee. It must have gone 50 feet, and starts racing toward Earth. Now, being the semi-intellingent creature that I am (unlike the guy that tossed it late), I did a quick survey of the area, and seeing that there were HUNDREDS of people within the projected landing area of the cap I knew disaster was impending. I watched with morbid glee as it came down perfectly lateral, and cracked down on the bare head of a female graduate way in back. It hit her so hard that her knees buckled, and someone had to stop her from collapsing. She was quickly ushered to a nearby chair, and brought out of her imminent blackout. I didn't like her much, so it was slightly funny when I was sure whe wasn't seriously injured. The guy that tossed his hat disappeared QUICK when he saw it land, and was not seen again.

Kevin..I just saw the vid of u doing 225...holy mackerel mother of jesus!

how the heck did u get that strong weighing only 150?

I weigh 185 and I can do 200 8 times on a good day

I hate u man :)

Seriously though, u are one strong mofo..How much did you bench when u started? And how long did it take for you to get to 315? I can only dream of hitting 315...I've been stuck at around 240 for the longest time. It seems like the ONLY way I'm ever gonna get to 315 is for me to gain 50lbs :(

KevinStarke
06-23-2005, 12:21 PM
i've been stuck at 315 for over a month now but i hope to pass it soon, it took me a year and half of powerlifting to get up to 315, i lifted casual for a few years before i started powerlifting but never went nuts, not over 205 i dont think. How'd i get strong at 150... dont really know i just kind of lift haha

Heh Id like to get down into a weight class but Im a SHW at heart (just not a very lean one). If I can keep my SHW weight and trim down to around 10% body fat, Ill stay there. If I ever do get serious about competeting ( I dont really consider myself a powerlifter right now ) Id like to be in the SHW class... It will take a hell of a lot of effort to be anything in with that group but the payoffs are worth it. As long as its muscle I wouldnt care if I were you. Good luck with keepin that weight off man.

Some big guy asked to see my form and he looked up or well down at me with an eye brow raised and goes, "teenage weight class?". I nodded and whipped out my license which is one of those vertical ones with the big red bar at the bottom that says "NOT 21 TILL BLAH BLAH BLAH...". He called one of his buddies over and they laughed at me for a bit then accepted my form and i went and weighed in, good stuff. I finally got some food in me and im ready for tomorrow. The meet was awesome, i had a great time and really enjoyed the energy. I did ok for my first meet and for being one of like two people who benched raw. For starters i did break the state record for my age group (16-17) and weight class (148) with a bench of 285. I was a little nervous so i started 275 and was unpleasently surprised by the ammount of time they make you pause at the bottom of the rep, it kind of threw me through a loop. I went for 300 but stuck it in the middle, oh well better luck next time i suppose. I was the ONLY person in my weight class for my age group, infact there were only 3 people in my age group participating. One guy was 305 lbs, myself, and another guy who was in the 181's. I guess the teenage division isnt important enough to recieve seperate trophies for each weight class but it makes sense considering that would be ALOT of trophies, 14-15, 16-17, 18-19 with all weight classes for each. So even though i went uncontended they placed us according to lifts regardless of weight, the 305 lb guy came in 3rd, i came in second, and the 181 beat me for first, i couldnt compete against a bench shirt and 30 lbs on me. I still did what i went to do and that was break that lame record.

The highpoint of the competition was some recognition i got from a real strong 148 open lifter. His name was Jason and he was 31 and in the 148 lb open class he put up 385 for his starter, nailed 400, and almost got 410... thats nuts. After i lifted though he shook my hand and commended me for lifting raw telling me he finds that more impressive than the guys that are putting up big numbers with shirts. I told him i planned on getting and training in a shirt asap and he said he knows i'll be crushing his and many other records in no time. He said at my age and with my genetics im a shoe in for big benching, just gotta master one of these damn shirts. Coming from a guy that strong it made me feel real good so im looking forward to puttin up some big numbers by the end of the year.

I met up with a fellow WBB memember at the competition, drew, who was competing in the deadlift. Great guy, extremely nice, friendly and shorter than i expected mwahaha. At the weigh in he had a mohawk but i was sad to see he had shaved it for the competition. He put up great weight at 181 but i'll let him post about, dont wanna ruin his fun.

As crazy looking and acting as many of the lifters there were they were all some of the nicest guys i've met and i really enjoyed myself! I definitelly plan on continuing to compete, next on the list is the maine APA state records. Get this... the 148 lb weight class in the 16-17 year old division has the current lift records...

Squat - 185 lbs... no im not joking check the site www.apa-wpa.com
Bench - 260...
Deadlift - 320...

Not to sound arrogant or anything but i can destroy those records and i mean common whats with that squat!

I highly recommend participating in a competition to everyone here who hasnt, its a great experience. Damn i love weight lifting!

Thanks everyone! I did have a blast and i believe i am now addicted, all i wanna do is go do another competition... but alas it is time to TRAIN!

MM - oh im eating man believe me. However i was told by the guys there that i should be lifting at or within 5 lbs of my weight class so im not going to bulk up 158-160 as planned, i'll probably just hang around between 150-153 as usual and try to build strength.

WWBIRL - yah it kind of suprised me i was lifting against a 300 lber and a 181 shirt user but oh well still did what i went to do. 275 is light i'll post the video i just threw that sh*t up but there was no way no matter how much energy i had that i would beat a 181 in a 2 ply bench shirt. It wouldnt have made sense really to put us all in seperate weight classes because none of us had any competition... would have been first, second, and third place go to... kevin majoros! haha, oh well time to start saving for a bench shirt... but which one... ARG! Anyway thanks again everyone!

BTW, how long do they make you pause with the bar on your chest for the bench press?

KevinStarke
06-28-2005, 07:28 AM
bighwn - i'm gonna try phone books today since im still away from home but when i get back im sure i can my dad to help me out with gettin some 2x6's and maxing some real boards.

specialk - it differed. the judge says "press" when "the bar is steady and under control at the chest" so it depends on how you bring it down. On my 275 it was at my chest for maybe... 1-2 seconds, same with my 285. I brought down the 300 a little sloppy and i held it there for what felt like a solid 3 and i just didnt use my lats enough to bring it down so my chest was shot by the time the pressing began. Some of the guys were bringing the bar down REALLY slow, almost like a negative drew can vouch for that one we were both a little unsure what was with a 6-7 second decent but then as soon as he touched the judge would say "PRESS!" and that sh*t shot up.

drew
06-28-2005, 07:43 AM
Kev, on your 3rd attempt I think you brought the bar down a little uneven and you didn't get it straightened out right away, it was definitely longer. It sucks because by the 3rd and 4th flights the judge was being a little more lenient. Some guys were practically touch and go.

Of course, that dude Luis must have taken 15 seconds to bring the bar down. He probably flew home afterward with the enormous wings he has.
