ok... this question has no real significance other than i'm just curious.
i see a lot of people who do bi's and tri's on different days and that makes sense, even to me, as a relative newbie.
why is it that no one (that i've noticed at least) do quads and hammies on different days? wouldn't it be the same basic idea?

No. My understanding is that the point isn't to split the arms into more than a single day but to work the bis and tris fully since they are majorly employed by back and chest routines, respectively.

Well the reason I do bis and tris on different days come down to biological reasons.... but I am a newb to so I am probably doing it wrong.... But it usually takes me about 1 hour + to do my bi's and 1 hour + to do my tris so.... your muscles are usually in an anerobic state after about 50 minutes so I read? So I thing it would be not so good to do them on the same day???
btw anareboic = with oxygen thus they are creating lactic acid through the krebs cycle, instead of ATP

a) if it takes you an hour to train just your biceps, you are doing something horribly, horribly wrong.
b) the main reason you don't see this much is that the legs work together more than the arms do - squats work both the quads and hamstrings, while the biceps/triceps more work with separate pushing and pulling movements (although there is some synergy there, too.)

how long would you say one should work on their biceps????

about 10-15 min

do about 4 different exercies of 3-4 sets of each. That should take no longer than 15-30 mins depending if the gym is crowded or whatever.
You would want to do those bodyparts on separate days so that the muscles that are compounded can get as much rest as possible.

I work quads and hamstrings on different days. Sort of.
I do quad dominant / hamstring accessory on one leg day, and hamstring dominant / quad accessory on the other.

how many sets reps do you do for bis? and how many times a week?

0-3x6-10. 0-1.
Do you do chinups on a regular basis?
24 to 30 reps total in about 4 sets. 2x per week on ME/box squat days after lats.

I do direct work for my biceps for about 5 minutes a week - but I'm only 225 pounds, so I'm not really as big as I'd like to be, so I focus on stuff like squats, deads, presses, rows, and chins so I get bigger.
I figure when I can do barbell rows with 315+, I'll probably have pretty big arms.

So if I am understanding this correctly then.... by doing back and chest you will be making your arms a lot bigger?
i spend about 20 minutes on bi's and do between 6 - 8 sets. this used to be close to 12 sets if not more but i think i was overtraining as they are a small muscle

I do 6 sets on my bis while cutting, 8-9 when I bulk. And I do 'em on a different day from back.

ah. i should've thought of this.
thanks!

My primary back movements are BB rows and pullups, which hit the biceps well. Fairly low volume 2x per week. That is why I do not work biceps very much. Curling of any form bores me to tears and is my least favorite movement.

Well your bi's and tri's already get a good workout from back and chest exercises. having 1 - 2 hours for arms will only fry your muscles and spent calories/nutrients/time that you could use to rest and allow muscle to repair and grow.

Yeah I'm sure my bi's and tri's get a bit of a workout on my chest/back day but I also have a shoulder/bi/tri emphasized day. For both biceps and triceps I only usually do a total of 4 or 5 sets. It seems to work for me, just do high weight lower reps. Plus I suppose dumbbell shoulder press gets the tri's a bit too though it emphasizes the shoulders mostly.

You want as much rest in between your days as possible, so find out what you will do then contemplate over which days that exercise or body part falls under.
Built you should become a personal fitness trainer!

It takes me no more than 45 minutes to work my biceps and triceps. I like to rest between heavy close grip presses though, so that's why it takes a little while :)
