A gallon or two a day. Break it up over the course of the day. I usually strive for three to four of those tall liter Poland Spring bottles and anything extra.

And yes, shakes made with water count towards the total.

I was told that the amount of water you drink should be based on your weight. Since someone thats 120lbs doesnt have to drink as much as someone who is 285lbs. But a gallon is a good starting point, You should be able to get much more than that in a day.

^ Just go grab a dixie cup or a glass of water every half hour, or hour and it adds up. I take a huge jug of water with me to work, so this helps, but the little bits here and there add up too.

Work outside all day, you'll have no problem finishing a gallon. I see the same lady at the grocery store every other morning when I pick up 2 gallons. One day she finally asked me, "what do you do with all this water?" I couldn't think of anything funny to say, so I told her I drink a gallon every day. She still looked at me like I was crazy.

Drink anything other than water? If so, then if you replace them with water, you'd probably hit the mark quite easily.

Most doctors/specialists state that the body requires 2-2.5 litres/day. Some say between 1/2 to 3/4 ounces of water per pound per day, depending on the amount of exercise, heat loss, etc - whatever that works out to. All liquid intake counts towards how much fluid you should be consuming in a day, although I wouldn't recommend 2 L of beer/ day :P

Remember also that food contains water (fruits, etc) although the amount is small.

The true test to see if you're drinking enough water: Check the color of your urine. If it is clear to light yellowish - you're good. If it looks like apple juice, drink up. If your body is low on water, your kidneys try to conserve it by concentrating the urine. If you have enough, or even too much water in your body, the kidneys excrete more water in the urine.

Hope this helped :)
