my journal. im going to keep this one because i have an internet connection that isnt going to go away after 3 months again...

anyways
18 years old
6'
200lbs
body fat % = ?

bench 1rm = 300 touch and go 285 competition
squat 1rm = 405 atf.
deadlift = i have no access to that for a while, havent done it in months

changes: i only squat atf anymore. i think my next meet (december) i will go atf there too since it will be my first meet in over 8 months. bench is finally moving up at a decent pace. no more 5lbs a month thank God.

background info: started jan 2004. i squatted 315parallel, benched 200 or so, deadlifted almost 400 :eek: at my peak last april i squatted 515 for a single, benched 285 competition, and deadlifted 535 competition. i then took 3 months off after bombing out on squat at high school nationals. i was so mad at myself i wanted to quit lifting. so i have been squatting again for about 3 weeks and im only at 405 :( but after 4 weeks my bench is back to where it was. i can no longer deadlift though, only rdl's etc... (i lift in my garage and cant crack the cement lol)
also, when i was lifting all those big numbers, i was at a BW of 230. i would starve myself for a few days to make 220 weight class. (smart i know) when i quit lifting for 3 months i dieted down to 180 and now i weigh 200 even but can bench 300 again. i need to get my squat back up, and build my hammies up enough so i can start deadlifting again at a decent weight.

the midwest senior states is in december about a week before i turn 19. last year i went and took 2nd place, lost to a 34 year old. my goal this year isnt to win, but just crush all my old pr's (and do it raw) and show all those old folk what an 18 year old can do.

pics: only have a couple, and they arent your normal pics. as you can see, my legs have suffered. my back is doing decent because i can actually do pullups now, 10 in fact. compared to my old max of 1. arms are just growing faster than ever before.

If I were to go to school thats what I would like to study.

Real, real nice squats dude. I did close stances for a while but always found my knees going way in from of my toes so I just quit with them. you have any problem keeping your knees back and still sitting back going atf on that narrow of a squat?

nope none at all. my knees point the direction of my toes, they dont go in at all. however, when i use a wider stance, they go in all the time.

Nah it wasn't so much a problem of them going in. More of me being able to sit back enough that when I drop ATF they would bend far past my toes, putting all the weight and stress on my knees.

when you say where do i pause, do you mean what part of the rep or what part of the body? i pause at the bottom at my nipples for 2 seconds when im doing paused reps. for regular sets i dont pause, but i touch my nipples. and thanks for the compliment.

i have been messing around with pullups. i have never got into them but the past two weeks i have been just doing them a lot. anywhere from 1 set of 10 a day to three sets of ten, to weighted sets of 5 etc... feels like its working somewhat, ill have to make a more accurate assessment after i take a few days off.

Where was the HIIT in relation to the lifting?

I do HIIT on cuts, it's wild stuff man. I'm not sure that you're doing it correctly though if you can do 30 seconds on 30 seconds off for 4 minutes straight. 30 seconds is pretty long to do a balls to the wall sprint, and then another one with only 30 seconds of rest. I could do a sprint per se for 30 seconds. but at the end of the 30 seconds I would not be running as quickly as the beggining. The idea is to give 100% for as long as you can give 100% for. Then rest until you can give 100% again and keep going until you're not giving that anymore. Maybe you're just in real good cardiovascular health and I'm jealous though... :hide:

hah, i wish. i just got it off some fitness website, they want you to use 1:1 ratio from the offset, which i dont think is right? so yeah, after the first sprint, i started slowing down. and i had to walk for my last two rest sets. and its down the street at a soccer field where i did it, if thats what youre asking?

whats your breathing like on benching? I had a buddy i used to lift with who couldnt bench for the longest time because he would get crazy headaches. then he just started exhaling better and they went away. then he quit lifting

i dont know what my breathing is like on any lift. i know i inhale/exhale frequently on bench, but on squats, i usually exhale (i think) on the way up, and inhale again before i drop. sometimes i think i do a couple reps with one breath, if im going fast enough, and when im on the end of a set, i stand locked out breathing heavily for a few seconds before i finish.

far from good, i know.

Try to get a pattern down of inhaling on the negatives and exhaling smoothing and forcefully on the positives instead of just breathing sporadically. This helped my buddy a lot.

yeah, its like calves, fine the first 10 or so reps, then the last 5 or 10 you feel like you have charley horses in your forearms. im just doing them for looks... and no, no illness, just was LAZY and skipped saturday's workout.

thanks, squats are getting back up to their former selves lol. it will be awhile before i get back to 515 though. after two more weeks of 3x8, im going to start lowering the reps a little (3x6 or so) and my name is shaun, yours?

good workout, 350x6 was picture perfect form, 365x6 knees went in just a tad on the last two reps, 385x6 knees went in just a tad on last 3, but not too bad.

im happy, im getting somewhat into the higher poundages again. i hate having anything less than 4 plates on the bar :(

damn dude that is a helluva deadlift. nice rack too.. i really regret buying an olympic bench instead of a rack for my place.. its useless. i rarely use it anymore

and once again you have some disgustingly strong squats

when you do decline weighted situps, where do you hold the weight? if i hold it behind my head, even a 25lb plate is overpowering, but if i hold it on my chest, i can pile up the 45's..

meh. damn college. lol another 3 month layoff? yup. trying to come back with a force this time. i am trying one of the wbb programs though, figure it might work since i havent lifted much over the last 3 months. also i am starting a fitday, i am going to use it for about a week or so, to try and figure it out, then i will post it up in my sig.

i have been spending too much time on the internet basically lol. staying up until 4 am talking to friends is very bad, when you have to get up at 9 am... i am always tired and never get my homework done. i have even been skipping class to sleep! i need to get my ass in check, i am getting paid to be here, least i could do is show up to class. anyways i am giving myself a bed time of 1130-1200 and trying to wake up earlier so i can make better breakfast besides just cheerios. 8 hours of sleep/night and going to class EVERY day is my main priority. lifting comes in 2nd.

i am up to 210 lbs, still 20lbs less than i weighed in high school.... :( my goal is 230 again by april 25. 2lbs a week, i think i can do it, i will be happy with 225 though. 3750-4300cals daily eek!

todays workout:
bench press: 215x5 225x5
dips: bwx10, bwx8
skulls: 55x8, 65x8
calf raises: 245x20 265x20
atf squats: 245x10 255x8

good workout. i think calories today was like 4200, dont know how accurate fitday is....

waaaaaaaaaaa i did 270x3 on deadlift ahhahaaha. damn i used to do 405 for sets of 10... i think my legs are fine though, my back was my weak link. it was easy for me to stand up with the weight, just hard to keep my back straight. also my back is sore but not my legs...

as for my job, i clean floors. they give us one job a night (shampoo carpet, strip and wax or burnish) we only use machines so its not really hard manual labor, and we usually get done about 3-4 hours before we clock out. its a good job.

im happy :)

man i suck at keeping this updated.

hit a brick wall for about a week or two because of going to failure too much. now back making progress.
weight is at 238 (bit of a belly but i dont care)
latest bench: 270x5 barely
dips: finally can get 2x10 of BW
squat: started doing 1 20 rep set per workout 2 workouts per week, something just to switch it up.
first day i almost died, 275x17, 2nd workout of that week 275x20, almost died again, tuesday did 280x20, not bad at all, lower back was terribly sore but everything else was good. taped it too and all 20 reps were clean. i want to hit 315x20 by may5

He used the rack lockouts as the max effort exercise. The BB bench before hand was jsut to really warm himself up for it. Strong lockouts man whats your weight? Heavy lockouts definitelly takes its toll on my shoulders too, feels good though.

yeah it sucks because some days i work 8am-4pm and some days i work 4pm-11pm so its always wacky. i get to sleep in on the days i start at 4pm though. of course those are always the days i dont work out LOL

yeah fma, 435 is pretty decent, but i was still a lot stronger when i was in high school. but i have taken so much time off that its too be expected. i did 515 then and i want to get back up there fairly quickly. 3 months i want to be repping 480 for a couple.

jm press is kind of a mix of a skullcrusher and a cgbp. you bring the bar down (straight down) over your chin, pause for 2 seconds about 2-3'' above your chin, then explode back up. you keep your elbows tucked into your sides the whole time.

Strong workout bu tyour current maxes make no sense at all...305 full range, alright, 345 2-board, alright.. 295 3 board..? a 3-board isnt much ROM and if you can lockout 470 freakin lbs with a 5" ROM 365+ should be nothing on the 3-board man. Could just be a really bad week?

i think my nervous system is honestly just shocked from saturday if thats possible? i was not sore at all sunday but monday, yeah i was. and today a bit too.

what i did saturday was try that "max overhead squat competition" thing they have going in the powerlifting forum. i started with a front squat and then push jerked above my head. up to 205 was cake. then at 225, first time i tried 2times to get above my head and missed both. then i tried 2 more times to get above my head and missed both. then i tried 4 more times, got it above my head all 4 times, but lost balance of the bar and it crashed down on to my chest. its still bruised up. i hate that **** and will never do it again, lol

good workout. just got my ephedrine and caffiene pills today, took 24mg/200mg about 20-25 minutes before my workout. didnt really feel much of anything. i had a great workout but im not contributing it to the pills, but i guess they definitely didnt hurt anything.

i have a video of the 500lb coming up, maybe some others, like 405 or 435 or 465 forget what i videoed. but * = loose belt, ** = tight belt and ****ty straps. deadlifting sumo i have both my hands close to the middle of the bar. unfortunately my bar is some lame olympic style or something, so there is no knurling at all for the center 2ft or so. so even if i had gary bolton's grip i would not be able to hold 500. so i used some home-made ghetto straps out of 1.5'' flat tow rope. they suck ass. but i look cool at least, double overhanding 500lbs hahaha.

oh yeah, i only have 480lbs of weight, so to do the 500lb deadlift, i used electrical tape to tape a 10lb dumbbell on each side of the bar. it was pretty classy. it looks real cool in the video.

500lb deadlift @ 210bodyweight

a couple things: the right hand strap came loose half way up, that is why i stalled, i did not hitch it up, i was trying to regrip the bar. thats why at the end, fully locked out, the right side of the bar is lower than the left. if strap stayed tight it would have been one smooth ride all the way to lockout. but oh well next time next time next time.
oh and my friend made that sweet sign so i had to show it off. hahahaha

lets see. lockouts are strong! i am confident i could push the same weight for 5'' lockouts as well. that was not very hard considering the weight! it didnt hurt my shoulders at all today, but my forearms felt like the blood vessels were going to explode after the last set, lol

shirted pressing: well what can i say, i tried doing more of an elbows in, bench to the top of my abdomen, without trying it raw first. not smart hahaha. also it's impossible to bench like that in my rack, as you can see the weight is in front of me when i bench not behind. so its hard on my shoulders to pick that much weight up. if i scoot closer to the bar, i am too close to the rack and i hit it when i lower the bar to my abdomen/sternum. the 315 was more elbows out, to about an inch below nipples, made it up, stalled at about 5'' (3 boards, imagine that) but got it up relatively easy. the first 365 like i said slid down the rack because i was too close. the second one didnt, but i was not used to shirt pressing (this shirt is more towards elbows out benchers anyways) my elbows didnt even come in that far. i made it up to about 5'' by myself, then my spotted estimated probably 20lbs help from there on up. so 3 board presses are in my future some more! :(

cgbp: never went ME on these before, not bad, elbows tucked the whole time, 245 was very tough, had a few stall points, not sure why i went 250.

okay workout, but i need to get in the gym with real powerlifters to help me use my shirt. i know how to get it on fine, but using it is another story...

Strong workout, and your right the lockouts looked very very strong. Id be willing to bet you could have smoked 5 wheels for the same reps.

The **** bench was close, I think you could have got it but that was a DAMN slow decline lol.

I love CGBP, most I've ever done was 225x6 and that wasnt too too hard.

I did some rack lockouts a few months back, but the heaviest I did was 365 for a few.


Good looking strength, seems your moving well in the push area.

never done a 20 rep bench before i figured i would try 185, got it. had to pause after 15 and 18 reps, barely got number 20 but hey it was fun.

my competition bench form seems to be getting better too, those 225 sets were pretty easy considering i just toasted my arms on that 20 rep set. i was very surprised to get the 275 pause rep as well after all of that.

those "horizontal pull-ups" were kind of different i guess. i read an article by dave tate that talked about how horizontal pulling is what you need to do most of the time for training your bench, not vertical so much.

oh and i sure as hell had a nice pump going after all that back/bi stuff. i dont know how much that will help me but if kevin thinks its beneficial why not give it a try.

not bad workout. i only have 480lbs in plates and it went up semi easy so i taped on a bunch of dumbbells on each side lol. halfway up they fall off the left side (23lbs worth) and i dropped the bar. damn but its a good story!

squat LOOKS like i am losing strength but i think i had a great workout! i have not done anything longer than slightly shoulder width in about a year, this time my feet were almost to the inner collars on the bar.
comparison, i measured:
old width: 30''
new width: 42''

that means i moved each foot out 6''! doesnt seem like a lot but my ROM is 3'' less! i went from 23.5'' ROM to 20.5'' ROM, that means i shaved 13% off of my ROM. hot damn that doesnt seem like a lot but trust me it is! (sorry if you cant tell im bored tonight)

i am a little sore when i squat down to parallel at that width but with a few more squat sessions im sure i will settle in pretty nicely. bigger poundages this fall for sure!

Turing 20 does suck, I just turned 20 on the 18th of Nov and its like... hmm no new privileges this year. Next year though... next year will be oh so sweet.

behemoth i do my static holds at the bottom of my shrug rom, im just concentrating on grip.

and i am only working 40hrs a week now and not in school until summertime... i got most of my debt paid off so that is quite a relief.
