there was a similar thread like this, but its a couple years old, and it's good to get fresh views.

let's see what the recipies to your homemade shakes so we can share and compare. and possibly try some new yummy ones.

This is what I use

Milk - probably like 300ml im guessing
Yogurt - one of the 175g i think they are packs
1 scoop vanilla protein powder
A bunch of berries (I buy frozen ones and let them thaw out the night before)
1 tblsp of flax seed oil
1 tblsp of cod liver oil
1 tspoon of some powdered minerals

It certainly is delicious and nutritious.

2 Cups Vanilla Ice Cream
4 TBSP Peanut Butter
1.5 Cup Whole Milk
1/2 cup frozen fruit (i like raspberries)

my 'protein shake' is something like this:

50g chocolate protein
1 banana
2 cups skimmed milk
5-6 fresh mint leaves
1 heaping spoonful peanut butter
dash of vanilla
bit of splenda & salt to taste (to minimise bitterness)

i also do non-protein smoothie:\
2 cups 'mixed berries' - raspberries, blackberries, blueberries frozen
1 cup strawberries frozen
2 bananas
1 cup cranberry or aronio juice (not the mostly grape juice kind)
some peaches if in season
1 cup oj or yogurt if i have some around, for tang.

makes 4 servings.

JesseM
11-02-2005, 08:16 PM
2-4Tbs natty pb (creamy)
2cups whole milk
1scoop ON whey
1Tbs Olive oil

Just under 1000 calories with about 55 grams of protein and best of all no blender required. Sometimes I throw a packet of splenda in there as well for extra sweets.

Spartacus

you guys adding olive oil - is that a taste thing, are you trying to get more fat/calories into your diet, or is it to improve the texture of the shake?

Invain

Extra calories and healthy fat. I don't taste it at all.

also i forget who posted it, but adding a 1/2 teaspoon of instant coffee tastes great with shakes that have cocoa whey (even if it makes terrible coffee.) keep caffiene and caffeine free for morning/evening shakes respectivly

Invain, I tried yours and forgot the olive oil and honey.

it was still pretty good though, nice and filling too. the only thing i didnt like was the fact that it's hard to blend the oats, so when you drink it you get this weird texture. i might do it again with oil+honey

Try

20 oz milk

1 scoop glutamine powder ~ just cause I got some
2 scoops dry non-fat powdered milk
2 packets instant breakfast ~ cheapest kind you can find

I make this every morning for breakfast and it's AWESOME - tastes great, has great cals, etc.

1 cup raw oats
1 *frozen* banana
1.5 cups skim milk
1 tbsp peanut butter
1 scoop protein powder

It takes about 2 minutes to throw everything into a blender, and it has the following stats :
771 cals
16 g fat
109 g carb
53 g protein

If you prefer more fat, add some olive oil (you can't taste it whatsoever), and if you want more protein, add more whey powder - I currently use chocolate flavored and it works great. The frozen banana is the key - it makes the entire shake smooth and cold, unlike ice, which generally leaves the shakes moderately chunky. I encourage you to try it once, you won't go back, I guarantee. I put a cut-up banana in a ziplock bag the night before in the freezer so I don't have to worry about taking the peel from a frozen banana, which gets messy.

i totally agree, bananas are the key to getting your smoothies to be smooth. plus they're quite cheap. usually i peel all the bananas when they are as ripe as i want them, and put them in a ziplock, so i have a good supply; its hard to keep them fresh because they ripen so quickly. i don't cut them up, i stick it in the blender first thing (break it in half first) with a bit of the milk to ensure its really smooth.

Is there a way to make a post-workout shake either thicker or less frothy? I use water, whey protein and Gatorade [no dextrose here and it's too expensive to ship it in internationally]. It's really frothy, not shake-like at all, just whey-ish tasting gatorade with the same consistency as water. I have a 1.2 liter thermos and 1liter of water with 50g/gatorade 50g/protein doesnt fit unless I pour some in from my shaker, wait for the foam, pour some more, wait for foam, it's a real pain. Do I have to just suck it up and buy an even bigger thermos? Once they get any bigger, they become the cup type not the drink-from-the-bottle type like I have now. Thanks.

As for shakes that aren't post workout, these are great ideas. I use some myself.

perhaps you should look up a post or two, for advice on thickening your shake??

you probably have to much water in it, try just using milk, and less than you currently are. alos, 'frothy' might be because you mix it too long. best to add your whey right at the end, and quit mixing as soon as it is integrated.

Thanks for the info, I'll try shaking less. I'm just worried I'll get all the whey near the bottom and only water at the top. I also changed my whey brand, we'll see how it goes this time.

As for using milk, it's expensive here and milk [lactose] and I don't get along as well as we used to. But maybe someday I'll try with soymilk.

Wow, before I discovered this site I made my shake with skim milk, ON Whey protein, peanut butter, bananas, and oats. I thought it tasted great and am sticking with it. I NEVER would have guessed that all these people are making their shakes with the SAME ingredients. The pb idea was just kind of a guess and after not eating pb in a long time I was suprized by how well it tasted.

Anybody put peanut butter in a shake without using a blender, like just using a shaker of some sort? I'm thinking that that would not be sufficient to mix it all up and avoid just clumps of peanut butter sitting on the bottom, but I lack a blender at the moment. Perhaps it's time to invest in one.

When I feel "protein deficiency" :)

Combine in a Blender:
6oz pine apple juice
banana
1/2 cup fat free plain yogurt
some frozen berries
a little bit olive oil

Start Blending...

Add 1 to 2 scoops of vanila protein powder from your favorite supplier.

Without the peanut butter thatís 246 calories. With my definition of a ďdab,Ē Iím probably looking at 300-350 total calories.

Gabe's Kitchen of Goodness...

World Famous Shake!

1 Cup of Skim Milk (90 cal)
1/2 Cup of Vanilla Ice Cream (130 cal)
1 Scoup of Whey Protein Powder (120 cal)
1/2 Banana (~55 cal)

1) Put Ice Cream in blender
2) Put 1/2 Banana in
3) Pour 1 scoup of your favorite Whey Protein flavor in
4) Pour 1 cup of milk in
5) Blend until silky smooth
6) Enjoy.

The beauty of the shake is that it is quite flexable with your own personal tastes. Want Chocolate? Then use Chocolate Whey. Want more chocolate? Then use some sugar free Hershey's Syrup. Don't like Bananas? Then use Strawberries. Not your cup of tea? Fine, then throw any fruit you want in there. Or simply don't use any fruit. It is your call... Typically the fruit gives you the most taste bang for the buck in my opinion. Most of all, this formulation will result in around 16 ounces of goodness. That is two full glasses. Plenty enough to fill you and is only 395 calories. That works out for even a cut... If you are bulking, throw in more protein or ice cream, or heck, peanut butter if you want. Be flexable and be creative. You really don't have to create a high calorie desert, therefore, no reason to feel guilty. In this case, you can have your shake and drink it too! FYI: The ice cream is used to thicken the shake. You can reverse the ingedients for the Skim Milk + Ice Cream and add another 50 or so calories to the shake and it will thicken it up even more. Play around, don't be scared... Have fun, enjoy the taste and for the love of Me, get a good blender... That alone will take you places that you have never even seen before...

to make it nice and thick just keep the milk levels to a lower standard. also dont blend it for too long or it will become warm

1 scoop whey
5 tbsp natty PB
2 tbsp olive oil
1 breyers yogurt
1 banana

Its a lot of fat but its all good fat and good carbs, the shake tastes decent as well.

Does it need to be natty PB? I have noticed that a lot of people use that certain kind, what size yogurt are you using?

My Shake right now:

1 bannana
2 cups whole milk

I heard from Built and others that the non natural PB has a small percentage of trans fat that builds up if you eat a lot of PB (which I do). Both non natural and natural have 0g for trans fats on the jar, but the non natural has something like 0.3g and natural has 0.0g (I assume). The yogurt I put in the shake has 240 calories.

Seriously guys, I'm actually wondering. If you're drinking 2 or 3 shakes a day with these ingredients...do you buy the stuff in bulk? It seems like you would go through the stuff extremely quickly with the amount being used for multiple shakes. Doesn't it become a drain on your wallet?

2tbl sp. PB

what do you guys think? it has about 1600 calories, 52 grams of fat, 228 grams carbs, 64 grams of protein.

I'll add my recipe to the mix:

- 6 oz. milk
- 2 scoops protein powder (I use Optimum Nutrition, chocolate)
- 3 eggs
- 7 ice cubes
- 1 banana
- 1 cup pineapple tidbits (canned)
- 1 packet unflavored instant oatmeal
- almonds
- honey
- all-natural peanut butter

Makes up to about 35 oz., roughly 1200 calories and 85 grams of protein. Tastes great as well!

That sounds good I am gonna try that.

I make this shake on occasion and it tastes great.

Skim milk
Ice
Low sugar chocolate syrup (the kind used to make chocolate milk)
low sugar Peanut butter
Chcolate protein (ON 100% whey)

The key is to use whatever amount of each ingredient you want to obtain the desired taste. I use probably too much chocolate syrup but boy does it taste great.

BTW..I stole this recipe from the juice bar at my gym and they called it a Reese's rage! lol

I make a few variations, but stick to my basic- I like fruit and peanut butter

1 cup skim milk
2 scoops whey protien (I have Whey Gold Standard Strawberry and Dymatize Fuzzy Navel- both are good)
1 handfull of frozen strawberries- cheap, add lots of flavor and vitamins
1 scoop peanut butter
1/2 banana
1 small can of pineapple
A dash of apple juice or orange juice if I feel like it

It comes out very fruity tasting, which is right up my alley, and has something like 64g protien and a ton of vitamins.

Sometimes, I just make a basic fruit smoothie- frozen strawberries, orange juice, and canned pineapple, nice taste and it gives you some energy, a nice, healthy snack.

I have since then modified my mix: (all measurements approximate)

1/3 cup plain fat free yogurt
2/3 cup water or skim milk (if yogurt is not available)
1 banana
1/4 cup blueberies/rasberries
1/4 cup Oat Bran or Quick Oats
1-2 tsp of olive or flaxseed oil
1 tsp of bee polen
1 tsp of lglutamine
1 oz of Acai juice from Costco
+ Vanila Protein.

This makes awesome thick shake with texture from the Oats. In fact gonna make one right now :)

EDIT: Forgot the secret ingredient - Acai Juice

ON whey is good, and cheap. If you have the money, then you should go with chocolate nitrean as its a blend and not just a whey only product.

When I bulk my shakes are goana look something like this:

4 scoops chocolate ON
1 scoop chocolate Nitrean
2 tbsp pb

possibly some oats, not sure

Cutting shakes are just going to be protein in water, as I cant spare the calories for milk. But milk+chocolate protein = OMG. I could drink a gallon of it, tastes better then chocolate milk to me!

Heres one I dont mind for the mornings. Usually nurse this one on my way to school, then throw back a cup of oats and 1/2 cup of rasins once I get there.

2 Cups 2% Milk
1 Scoop Choco Mint ON WHEY
1 Banana
2 tbs PB
1 tbs Honey

Totals 708cal
fat - 28
carb - 77
pro - 47

The honey may have to drop down to a tea spoon since a table spoon makes it quite sweet! I would throw my 1/2 cup of oats in, its just that I dont chug this one back and the oats usually settle if I let it sit. I'll just eat em seperate.

This is the first protein shake I've used so I'm pretty new at this. I had been taking them straight up, but then I found a blender for $15. This is what I threw together.

8 oz 2% milk
1 scoop EAS Whey (Chocolate)

2 Tbs Wheat Germ

43 grams of protein by my count

It tasted great, but I haven't figured out how to suspend the wheat germ. I still end up with like 50% of it at the bottom.

When you said "natty", I thought you meant natty as in stylish, i.e., he's wearing a natty suit. I thought, good Lord, what's next: designer peanut butter by Martha Stewart?

2 tbs. hershey's chocolate

Ends up being like 1200 calories, great for a bulk :D

I have tried this recipe like 3 times. While it tastes great and goes down real easy it always ends up giving me a stomach ache a couple days later. I first thought I had the stomach flu but it always happens about 1-2 days after I drink this shake. Anyone know why? Should I leave the Olive oil out? Drink more water with it? Or is this just to many calories for my stomach to digest at one time? I am looking for a bulk shake without the stomach and digestion problems. Oh and GNC weight gainer did that to me too back when I tried using it.

sharkall2003
07-27-2007, 08:02 AM
Are you sure there isn't something else that is wrong? Stomach aches usually occur directly after eating. Unless it's an insane amount of volume (which this is not), and it's hard to digest food, there shouldn't be a problem.

Try

20 oz milk
2 or 3 large scoops whey
1 scoop glutamine powder ~ just cause I got some
2 scoops dry non-fat powdered milk

4 eggs

the eggs make it silky smooth

This shake must have mad protein with the whey + eggs

How do you know it was the egg? I think salmonella would have been more severe.

When using raw eggs, there is always the risk of salmonella because it is usually present inside the egg. Thats why cooking it kills the bacteria of and is recomended, but i wont lie i throw in 1-2 raw eggs in my shakes

Sorry if this is a silly question but whats the benefit of adding Ice into your shakes?

I dont normally try that, if it helps your shake somehow i'll add some ice into it. Mind you, thing is i always make my shakes in water as opposed to milk. Would it be okay to add some peanut butter into an oats + whey + water shake?

Sorry to hijack the thread, heres my shake...

100grams of Ultra Fine powdered Oats
30gram Scoop of unflavoured whey
250ml of water
half a spoon or sometimes one spoon of Cocoa powder
Some artificial chocolate flavouring powder
Stevia to sweeten it, usually with 1spoon of Maple Syrup

Thinking to maybe add some peanut butter from now on into there, or some ground flax powder.

Thanks!

Ice just makes it colder. A good sub for ice can be putting juice/milk in an ice tray or putting fruit pieces in the freezer. And why don't you use milk? It will only help to add more calories and protein.

im lactose intolerant bro :) Rrealllly wish i could, you know for quite some months i still continued having my protein shakes in milk for months but i cant take the stomach distress now, and the gas after a few hours, lasts till night time lol hahahaha. Bit of a problem when I have to go out somewhere :P

On the brighter side, I try and make up for the lost calories from the rest of my diet, and i Find, i can eat my next meal alot more easily after having a heavy protein shake thats water based as gastric emptying would probably quicker, for me, this is a Godsend as i couldn't eat my next meal properly for hours after my milk based protein shakes.

Thanks for the juice n fruit peices idea though, will try that deffo!

So last night I tried this recipe out:

3 Scoops Vanilla Ice Cream
4 TBSP Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter
1 Cup Whole Milk
1/2 Cup Oats
2 TBSP Olive Oil
2 Scoops Chocolate Nitrean

Put all this in my blender and gave it a go. At first i thought it tasted good, but after a few more gulps I noticed that it almost tasted like I threw a jar of peanut butter and a cup of milk in the blender and thats it. It wasn't too thick texture but it did seem like a lot of peanut butter and now when I think of Peanut butter I get a sick feeling lol. I think I'm going to add more ice cream and another cup of milk and substitute some bananas and strawberries next time instead of the PB, because last night I was Huggin the porcelain throne for about 10 minutes.

ground oats (powdered, good for thickness)
skim milk

Blend it all up and add water is necessary to thin it out as oats make it quite thick and drink it. Tastes like liquid reeses cups and really addictive

Hey I want to start a thread suggesting the best protein shake recipes out there, here are my favorites:

Protein MilkShake:
In a blender:
Take a glass size you want, from the brim measure 1 1/2 inchs down than add ice, add milk to it to fill in all spaces inbetween Ice.
Blend, than add a full banana.
Add about 2-3 Tbsp's of Honey
OPTIONAL: A spoonful of peanut butter (I'm allergic, but I heard it adds additional flavor and protein, its fine without it).
Than add 2 scoops of Vanilla, Banana, or Cookies and Cream Protein Powder.

Protein Smoothie:
In a blender:
Add about 2/3 Cup of Yogurt, and 1 cup of Orange Juice.
Add Strawberries (about 5 big ones)(frozen)
Add Half a Banana (frozen if possible) (I freeze a bunch of mine)
Add 1/2 cup of Blue Berry's (Frozen)
Optional: 1/3 Cup of Oatmeal (for breakfast smoothie, blend well)

...Bump >.<

I've only ever made Whey shakes (shake noob, I know) but lately my mom has been pissing on me about how much Whey costs. So I'm going to start fixing up some alternative shakes (that probably won't be saving her any money because we'll be buying new stuff) to make her happy. Atleast for now. Being a shake noob, I just have a few questions:

-I was thinking about trying out a Milk and Egg (and a bunch of other crap) shake, seeing as egg protein is apparently very high quality, however, no one else has posted about using eggs, which worries me. Is there anything wrong with this?
-Does Flaxseed oil contain all of the EFA's or just a portion of them? Does Olive oil?
-How much does Flaxseed and Olive oil cost? What grade of Olive Oil should I buy? Extra-virgin? Does Flaxseed oil have grades?
-Any other advice on getting enough protein into a shake without using any Whey whatsoever?

Thanks guys.

EDIT: After trying to concoct something on Fitday I realized that just four eggs have 850mg of Cholestorol (283%), so my plans were pretty shot. Any other good sources of protein you can think of? I'm open to any suggestions at this point.

1 Scoop (1 serveing) Trueprotein.com (Banana's And Creme)
2 heaped up scoops of peanut butter
16-20(ish) ounces of mile I personally use 2%
choc. syrup (not a ton but some people may use more than others)
half banana (full one is ok to i just use a half most of the time.)
ICE (to help make it ICE cold of course)

(optionals are little olive oil, little honey or whatever you wanna toss in)

BLEND WELL (smoothie consistantcy) a smoothie maker is amazing for stuff liek this. i have lines of the side showing the ammount of milk or liqued to use, ingrediants(there more room for fruit or w/e you want in that sucker),and showign abotu how much ice to put.

pretty good taste about like a choc. milkshake i love how it taste end up makeing it about half the time i make protein shakes.

the other half of the time I just throw one together.

Got one for you. I like this one just for the protein. It's great at night or on a hot day as a treat. At least I find so.
1 cup of either skim milk or soya
cocoa powder to taste
1-2 tsp of instant coffee
scoop of your fav protein powder( if vanilla you may want more cocoa)

real simple:
milk
vanilla whey protein
oats
banana
optional: brown sugar for taste
and of course, ice
I just tried this today and it was great. I have yet to try a shake with peanut butter.
