the spring clamps at my gym bug the hell out of me. sometimes, they are so worm out, when you squeeze them, they dont expand at all and wont go on the barbell.
for x-mas, i am going to probably ask for some barbell clamps (http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/P/B0006VSCCG.01-A3SHHEDXIOES3R._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg) . my old gym had these and they were so handy and easy. i was wondering if all olympic barbells have the same diameter, or will i have to take some measurements to make sure i dont get the clamps and find out they wont fit.

will this even be a problem with this type of clamp since you can twist the handle until it is tight?

Those are good ones, but they also seem to be the type that wear out the fastest. I'm guessing it's just a numbers thing - too many people using them over time. The ones with the bolts in the sides and wingnuts on them seem to be the most durable, IMO. But they also weigh over a kilogram each :)
You get the same 'wear' problem with the spring-type clamps with the chrome coils, too.

Edit: I'm pretty sure that Olympic barbells have a standard diameter. But I have seen cases where clips wouldn't fit. Try them.

Standard oly bar load end = 2" diameter. These are the most durable and best collars I have ever used: http://www.weightlossforgood.co.uk/shop/itemMFusi0836.htm

i have those muscle clamps & they are pretty good for most applications, but utter crap for deads & rows from the floor. i also have the spinlocks with wing nuts...they take forever to get on & one of mine is poorly made & don't clamp at all (too big for the bar).

finally i ordered these from ivanko (http://www.ivanko.com/products/prd_text/CO25.html) & they are the shyte...quick to apply & tight as hell. i wish i had bought these originally.

Yeah, don't you?

Maybe this link will work: http://www.acehardware.com/product/index.jsp?productId=1273400

It's 1.5in rubber pipe coupling. Cut in half gives two clamps. The downside is you need a nut driver to tighten it.

Thanks.
