well it finally happened. i choked on a vitamin pill when trying to swallow it whole and now i'm too scared to try swallowing them again hahaha. pretty pathetic, yes i know.

i even tried swallowing only half of it, but i still can't do it. why can't vitamins go down smooth like the fish gel caps man. sheesh.

anyways, i was wondering if there was difference between grinding them up into powder form vs. just swallowing it whole. would the benefits still be the same?

I break mine in half then chew them a bit. Just enough to get them down. As long as you take them with food you'll be OK.

Jeez people. At one time I was taking I think 19 pills at once every morning. There were so many it was hard to hold them all in my hand at once. 10 of them were fish oil caps, so they were huge.

If you can eat an apple or a carrot or ice, you can swallow a pill without choking to death. Its a mental thing you need to unlearn. I would NEVER consider chewing a vitamin over swallowing it. Not only is it nasty to chew medicines, it destroys the efficacy of the ones that are specially coated for timed-release.

very good point. that's what i was wondering about. would it be less efficient grinding them or chewing them vs. just swallowing it whole.

and yes chewing is quite nasty.

IMHO, i don't think it would make a difference

If you have trouble swallowing one small pill...think about the next bite of food you take and how big that is.

Would it make a difference if you ground it up? No. No magical fairy will come and take the vitamins away just because you decided to grind the tablet up. In fact, that tablet originated from powder anyway.

I agree, if you can swallow the pill whole then you should, but unfortunately I have a stomach/esophageal condition that prevents me from swallowing things sometimes (when it flares up). Unfortunately, I don't know when I'm going to have a problem until I swallow something that won't go down. I have had pills get stuck, and it's absolute hell until they disolve enough to push through. So needless to say, I chew everything I eat real well. I don't pulverize my multis but I chew them enough to where I know they are not going to give me a problem. I would add to this that if you're taking a time release multi, then you really shouldn't chew them, as it totally defeats the purpose of slow time based absorption.

If you can't swallow pills you need to address anxiety issues.
