View Full Version : Beerside (mass phase)

As you know I just started training with Beercan. Come Monday, I'll bring my journal with me to the gym and start keeping track of my workouts.

Mon- Pull
Wed- Push
Fri- Legs

We will be using a variety of exercises that won't have much rhyme or reason other than to just tear down as many fibers as possible. Then I'm gonna eat like a mofo(8 meals per day) and hopefully, grow. We will most likely take turns every other week deciding what exercises to use. You know we'll be doin deads on my weeks ;) . So that's it. I'll weigh in on the gym scale on Monday morning and go from there. Looking to add 20-30 lbs of usable mass and then I'll go from there.

What happened to PL competing at a low weight?

01-04-2002, 03:29 PM
What happened to

01-04-2002, 03:29 PM
latty decided to feed himself again

youll have to clean the dust and cobwebs out of that stomach first man

01-05-2002, 09:48 PM
...Answers alot powerman.. thanks.

01-06-2002, 06:43 AM
Man my chest is still sore from wednesday haha...I'm not even gonna mention my legs

O well, it's nothing 8 meals a day won't cure :D

Chris Rodgers

1.HS Hi row- 180x12, 230x4+2 partials
2.Wide grip chins- bwx8,5
3.Dorian rows- 135x8, 155x6, 95x12
4.Straight arm pulldowns(rope)- 60x12, 75x12
5.HS bicep curl- 2 sets to failure+ negatives
6.barbell curls- 1 set to failure
7.Hammer curls 1 set to failure

Holy facking shiat!! I forgot what training near, to and past failure can feel like!! I got such a pump right off the bat that I could barely move my arms! The poundages and reps for the bicep stuff is not important. I am so wasted by then, it doesn't take much to kill them. Let's just say they were pretty light. ;) Also, on the HS curls, 'can would put his foot on the plate for the negative and add resistance, so the negatives I was talking about were in the middle of my reps, not pure negatives after the set.

Once I get used to this type of training, I'm going to try and make it where my first work set on my big exercises is a heavy set to failure- anywhere from 1-7 reps. Then the second workset will be a higher rep range to failure- 8+, with most likely partials and/or negatives, maybe drop sets, etc. I'm gonna eat like a mofo and hopefully grow.

I forgot to weigh myself at the gym, so I'll do that on Wednesday. Maybe I'll have put on a few by then. ;)

Chris Rodgers

1.Flat DB press- 85'sx3
2.Inc. machine press- 150x10, 180x5
3.HS wide chest press-180x10, 180x5
*superset with*
Cable crossovers-50x8, 35x10
4.Military press- 95x6
5.Dips- bw+45x9, +45x5+ 3 at bw
6.OH cable ext- 80x12, 70x7
*superset with*
Cable pressdowns-60x5, 60x5

I was so wasted from this workout! These workouts are proving to be very brutal and I'm loving/hating it. :p I have no choice but to grow....now that I am eating too.

Weighed in today at a whopping 152. I will weigh myself prolly every other Wednesday.

01-10-2002, 05:54 AM
What have you been doing all this time ??

01-10-2002, 06:57 AM
Latty, what is HS as in:"HS Hi row", "HS wide chest press"

01-10-2002, 07:08 AM
hammer strength?

01-10-2002, 07:37 AM
must be....you're so goood!!

01-10-2002, 07:38 AM
heh. it's my astounding powers of deductve reasoning, my dear watson.

Chris Rodgers
01-10-2002, 07:36 PM
What are you talkin about Yates? If you mean training-wise, I have been doing mostly strength training for a while and I hadn't been doing sets to failure except for maxes. Even back when I was doing more of a bodybuilding routine, I didn't have somebody there to push me and help me with form and stuff.

Btw, HS= hammer strength as Tryska guessed.

01-10-2002, 10:58 PM
Huge Smurf? Gotta love those...

01-11-2002, 06:03 AM
"Lucky" for us no hammer strength today....I'm thinkin we're gonna go right to the squat rack when we can't deadlift anymore weight.....

01-11-2002, 09:55 AM
I dunno if Latty is gonna get to write in this today...soooo

His girlfriend trained with us today....she's really chill, goodlooking, and likes to deadlift and squat...what more can I say lol

So we started with deads....I managed to pull 365, not too bad for my second time dling in prolly a year...still, it's sweet to have a training partner that makes you feel like a puss for doing a weight like that.

Latty pulled 405 and made it look easy, and some homo came up to him afterwards reacting like he just picked a train up over his head lol

The squat rack is right next to the power rack, so without resting even a minute, we both got good solid reps with 225, pretty good considering we're both weak squatters that had just maxed out on deads.

We then proceeded to do some heavy calves, leg ext's with each other pushing down on the negatives, and finished up with some wall squats.

Have fun skiing this weekend bro bwahahahahaha

Chris Rodgers
01-11-2002, 02:41 PM
Thanks biatch! ;) I'm sure if you were wearing shorts that homo would have busted a nut over your calves, lol.

He basically stated the whole thing but here it is anyway.

1.Deadlifts-275x2, 315x1, 365x1, 405x1
2.Squats- 185x5, 225x3
3.Zerchers- 185x8
4.Leg extension- 1 set to failure with negatives
5.machine calf raise- 2 sets
6.Leg press calf raise- 3 sets-4 plates, 5 plates, 2 plates

Then we did some gay-ass wall squats while everyone looked at us and they hurt like fuk so I gave out first.

I'm going snowboarding this weekend, so if I have any energy I'll be back to check the boards on Sunday night. Peace and lovin :hump:

01-11-2002, 05:16 PM
Everyone looked at you? Are you the biggest in the place or something? heh..

Maki Riddington
01-12-2002, 04:12 PM
He's a buck fifty five but he looks 300. Bwhahhahaha. You know I'm just kidding bro.;)

01-12-2002, 04:23 PM
Maybe everyone else is like 110 lbs. :D

Chris Rodgers
01-13-2002, 08:10 PM
STFU assface. He looked at me because the fact that I am a buck-fifty and could lift 400+ lbs made him feel funny in the pants. Aigghhht biatch!!

Chris Rodgers
01-14-2002, 10:18 AM

1.Chins- BWx10(not to failure)
2.HS HI row-180x10, 230x3+*
3.Dorian rows- 135x8, 185x0**, 135x5-6
4.Seated row- 2 sets with 100, 120(felt like 1,000!)
5.Reverse pec deck- 2 sets
6.Barbell curls-2 sets(heavier than last week)
7.HS bicep curl-2 sets to failure+
8.Hammer curls-1 set to failure+

Then I just did a few reps with a 5-10 sec pause at the top of curl-grip chins. I was shot. The whole weekend of drinking and not eating the terrible food while I was away just drained me. I'm gonna eat like a mofo all week and hopefully be back up to par.

*I'm gonna use a '+' to indicate when I go past failure with either half and quarter reps or when 'can gives added assistance to the negatives. The reps shown will be the number of completed full reps.

**On the Dorian rows 185 was too much and they only went up with some leg help so I didn't count those reps. Just stripped the 25's off and kept going with 135.

Better workout than I expected after this weekend, but the vacation's over so time to get back to business and start eating.

01-14-2002, 10:46 AM

Nice try stilts. tuttut

1.Flat DB press- 90'sx1  , 70'sx8
2.HS wide chest- 230x7, 180x9
3.Pec deck- 2 sets to failure+, 90 lbs, 105 lbs
4.Inc machine press- 150x6, 135x7
5.Lateral machine- 2 sets, 45 lbs
6.Dips- bwx15(not to failure)
7.OH cable ext- 80x15, 90x7
*superset with*
Cable pressdowns-80x6, 70x5 drop to 45 to failure

Facking fried! I was p!ssed at db presses. Was looking to do a triple with that weight. I'll blame it on my lack of eating over the past 5 days.

Lateral machine sux IMO. I like dumbells better and I have a serious shoulder problem. My front delts are strong and seem to take on the responsibility during all pressing movements and on any kind of lateral my traps take over. Have to see if I can work that out.

We wanted to do weighted dips but some assface hid the belt on us and we couldn't do them. I'm gonna throw mine in my bag so this doesn't happen again.

Weight- 151 lbs  Gotta start eating.

01-16-2002, 11:25 AM
Isn't this just the cutest little love triangle you ever did see...

Why the fack was this shiat on page 2!?

Deadlifts- 275x2, 345x1, 425x.8, 315x13
Leg ext- 3 sets 100, 160, 200
Machine calf raises- 1 set

I was short on time today because the deads ran long and I had to get my car back from the shop. Next weeks session will be hardcore.

I attempted the 425 twice. The first time I started up but couldn't get my hips under me and drive forward so I couldn't get up t my knees. The second try and I had it going good and got it well above my knees but couldn't finish the lockout. I was p!ssed and some half-a-fag juicehead trainer came over and was like "I'm just a trainer here, but you should put the weights down lighter so they don't go through the floor."

Whatever buddy, go back to doing your machine shrugs with straps you homo. All I have to say is when you are doing a max deadlift, you do not lightly put the bar back down. By the time the attempt is over, I can't see straight, my head feels like it is going to explode and the shiat is heavy. I'm just worried about crushing my toes. Foo!

So I decided to drop down to 315 and see what would happen. That set was brutal and tore up my shins nice, but it was a nice burn in the legs/traps/forearms/etc.

After that just did some extensions with very slow, tight form with a pause at contraction. These were done to the point where I felt I couldn't do another perfect rep, but not complete failure.

Next week I will skip deads and squat heavy. 425 will be mine wuithin a few weeks. :evillaugh

01-19-2002, 10:51 AM
******* juicehead trainers. You shoulda deadlifted his sorry ass and thrown him outta the gym.

Still, damn nice deadlifting, missing the lockout was just fatigue, you've got 425 no problem. :)

01-19-2002, 11:39 AM
400+ at 150 is simply amazing!

Not far from 3x bodyweight.

01-19-2002, 01:59 PM
Yes. Yes it is. ;)

How come in every one of your workouts (or at least quite a few) it seems that some "expletive" trainer or trainee wants to come up to you and give you advice? It seems odd to me. At gyms I have frequented I would think the only thing that people would come up to you and say is "good job", or something like that. Maybe you should wear an sign on your back that says "leave me alone you 'expletive' trainer types".

By the way, how tall are you?

That was the first time someone offered "advice"

LOL the other time it was just some fag that was impressed.

Chris Rodgers
01-20-2002, 08:59 PM
Haha, yeah the other time was just some random homo that probably only goes near the power rack to get to the locker room. ;)

I'm 5'7"

Chris Rodgers
01-21-2002, 09:25 AM

1.Wide grip chins- bwx8
2.Very-wide grip pulldowns- 2 sets-100,130
3.DB rows- 2 sets- 80 lb, 90 lb
4.Wide grip machine row- 3 sets- 105, 120, 90
5.Reverse pec deck- 2 sets
6.Barbell curls-2 sets- 80, 60
7.HS bicep curl- 2 sets

Well, I'm in the beginning stages of a cold, so I pushed but not too many sets were to failure and nothing past failure. I also was sore from dead in my traps and low back, plus I was just friggin tired. I think it's a big difference to have both days of the weekend for rest instead of just one since we did legs on Saturday this week. Oh well, I'm just whining cause I'm a weak biatch. Wednesday will be a good push session and I plan on eating like a mofo before that.

01-21-2002, 11:18 AM
Eat.

chris mason
01-22-2002, 06:36 AM
Now that you are training to failure you will require more rest. A lot more.

By the way, 150 lbs at 5"7' is actually pretty decent size if you are lean. I go by the rule of thumb of 10 lbs per inch of height (assuming similar bone structure and bodyfat). So, if you were 5'11" that would be about 190 lbs. This is a rough guide, but you get the idea.

Chris Rodgers
01-23-2002, 09:50 AM
Well considering my training partner is the same height and outweighs me by about 40 lbs, I still feel tiny. :D I've been thinking lately that I really don't enjoy over-eating and that Yates' point about it not being possible to force-feed muscle growth makes sense. I'm gonna just make sure I'm consistent with my meals and keep the first few meals somewhat larger(after my workouts) and then let the cals taper off later in the day when I have less appetite. I think I could make a decent 165 PLer if I can get my bw around there and train for strength. We shall see.

1.Flat DB press- 85'sx4, 70'sx7
2.HS wide chest- 270x3, 230x7, 190x8
3.Inc machine press- 150x7,6
4.Pec deck- 2 sets- 90, 100
5.Dips- bw+90x3, bw+45x7-9 (can't remember)
6.DB shoulder press- 2 sets- 45's, 40's
7.Rope pressdowns- 1 set

Pretty good session considering I felt like crap when I woke up. I have to start bringing a journal with me because I keep forgetting. Beercan put up the 110's on db press so that'll keep me motivated to go up on those. Dips felt good especially considering I was pretty well done when I got to them. We may start with them in a few weeks to see what we can really do.

Chris Rodgers
01-25-2002, 09:49 AM

1.Squats- 185x5, 225x3, 275x1
2.Zerchers- 185x6, 245x3
3.Leg ext- 2 sets- 200 drop to 100, I totally forget the second set
4.SLDL- 225x8, 275x8
5.Machine calf raise- 1 set
6.Leg press calf raise- 2 sets- 5 plates, 3plates

Ouchie. My quads, hams, glutes, calves, hips, low back and just about everything got a good workout today. I was a bit disspaointed on the squat, wanted to do 2 reps, but when I went down for the second rep I went a little too low and then just kept going, lol. The first one was nice and deep though. I was goona do 250, but bitchass did 275 so I figured I would to. Next time I lift with my legs, not my ego.

Heaviest I ever went on zerchers. They murdered me. SLDL felt good even though I was fried by then. Could've done a few more reps but don't feel to safe on that platform. If I don't come back up the weight is going flying. The floor feels safer.

01-25-2002, 09:55 AM
LATMAN, considering you are 5'7 and I'm 5'5, I will start taking you serious.

The photo really did it. I've been on a downfall lately. Losing weight, not eating right, not sleeping right, and failing/or bored with my training. I hope you can post your meal plan. I did post on the diet thread that my metabolism has been incredibly fast. I eat 5 to 6 meals a day. But I get hungry so quick between these meals, and I THINK, as a result, am losing weight!

Please tell me your meal plan, and I'll read more on your training as well. Thanks!

Chris Rodgers
01-25-2002, 10:04 AM
So if I wasn't 5'7", you wouldn't take me serious?? LOL

Thanks man, I'm glad I can inspire somebody. Lately though, you won't be happy to hear, I have just been eating. Whatever I come acroos I'll eat. I haven't been extremely consistent. Usually my most consistent meals are my pre-workout, post-workout and first big meal after the post workout. After that I have been getting lazy and eating whatever.

Next week though I start school and plan on bringing meals with me to classes, so I will post up a new diet then. I'm going to go along with what Yates' has been preaching though and not try and force-feed muscle growth. I'm gonna eat enough to energize my workouts and try and add a few pounds a month. Nothing crazy where I always feel bloated and like I'm forcing down food. My new goal is a somewhat lean 165 by the summer and I'll be back into powerlifting as my focus by then as well.

Good luck to ya........midget. ;)

1.Close grip bench- 155x7,5
2.DB skullcushers- 20'sx8, 30'sx5 Barbell- 60x9
3.Cable pushdowns- 90x3, 75x8 or 9
4.Rope pressdowns- 1 set

I did this workout with just my girlfriend. Beercan worked all day and was shot. I just decided that I want to try and increase my tricep strength and at the end of push day, I am too shot to do them justice. I already know from Westside that they can take 2 workouts per week, so I figure I'll go in on Saturday, maybe every other week or so and do some real tricep exercises like close grips and skulls.

I also used today to do some light sldl and leg ext, followed by a 10 minute walk on the treadmill and some stretching. I'm hoping this will help with the recovery of my legs.

Chris Rodgers
01-28-2002, 09:43 AM

1.Wide grip chins- bwx6, +45x4, bwx9-10
2.Wide grip pulldowns- 2 sets- 130,130
3.DB row- 100x5, 70x10
4.HS Hi row- 180x10, 180x9
5.Wide grip machine row- 2 sets (forget? 105-135?)
6.Reverse pec deck- 2 sets
7.Kneeling DB shrugs- 1 set- 100's
8.Barbell curls- 1 set 70, 1 set bent over(spider curls) light
9.HS bicep curl- 1 set
10.Curl grip chins w/3-5 sec pause @ contraction- 1 set

Killer workout! I ate relatively nothing because I woke up late, but once we got moving I felt good.

I'm definitely doing the non-sanctioned powerlifting meet in March. I'm really not gonna do a PLing cycle to peak for this one. There will be no records to break or anything, but I will make sure I get some heavier squats and benches in before the time comes. I already know I'll be doing heavy deads.

Maki Riddington
01-28-2002, 09:54 AM
Very impressive Latty overall!!

01-28-2002, 09:56 AM
You forgot to mention the chins on the crossbar of the power rack.

Those were fookin sick.

Maybe those will make my arms grow  so I can do a show and whoop everyone's ass.

Until then, the judges will tell me to give them back to the fitness chick I borrowed them from lol

Chris Rodgers
01-28-2002, 10:12 AM
Oh yeah, the last set of chins were done on the cross bar on the rack. It's real thick and rectangular shaped so it makes it hard to hold on(great for grip).

01-28-2002, 10:31 AM
why so much volume for back? so many exercises?

Chris Rodgers
01-28-2002, 10:38 AM
I dunno, Beercan's a freak and likes to do a lot. I'm getting good workouts, so I'm not complaing. Even with all the exercises we are never there for more than an hour. That's with 3 people too.

01-29-2002, 05:52 AM

We both have pretty damn big backs that seem to like the abuse, lol, and by doing 2 sets per exercise, sometimes only one, it's less volume than you think.

We mostly keep away from warmups, prefering to use the lighter weight after the heavier, in the case of the pulldowns following the pullups. Done with your hands out as wide as they can on the bar, it tears the lats up.

I agree it might be high for some, but if you saw my lats you'd agree I'm not a victim of overtraining. ;)

01-29-2002, 05:58 AM
So lets see them!

Chris Rodgers
01-30-2002, 09:47 AM

1.Flat bench press- 190x4, 215xfailed
2.HS Wide chest- 230x8, 230x7
3.Pec deck- 2 sets- 120, 180
4.Dips- bw+90x4, bw+45x9
5.DB laterals- 1 set- 15 lbs
6.Cable pushdowns- 2 sets- 80, 90
7.V-bar pressdowns- 1 set- 55
8.Push-ups(neutral grip)- 20

Great session. I hit my goal of 4 reps with 190, then assface decided to do 225 and twisted my arm to try a heavy single. ;) If I stuck to my plan I would have been good, but at least I still hit my goal weight/reps with the 190x4.

Dips felt great. The fact that I can do them that last in the workout and still hit 2 plates feels good.

Just to clarify, the pushdowns are done with the v-grip bar and are down for tricep power. Baically a psuh straight down with my hands kept close to my body. The pressdowns are done with hands away from the body as an extension. I like the feel of the pushdowns and hopefully they will add to my tricep strength.

Chris Rodgers
01-30-2002, 09:48 AM
Oh yeah, my bodyweight is climbing gradually so that is good. Weighed in at 155.5 lbs today.

01-30-2002, 10:11 AM
I missed the 120's today

I tried to make myself feel better by reminding myself I haven't even been training a month, since my long layoff, but my fuckin day is still ruined.

I also decided to do a PL meet in june with latty...

I'm gonna lose, however; it'll be fun to prep for and do, and should bring my traps up for when I shut everyone out at my first bb comp in september.

01-30-2002, 11:38 AM
I'm gonna come up there to Long Island and make you guys look like the weak homos you are!

1.Deadlifts- 275x1, 345x1, 425x.8, 365x4
2.Squats- 135x5, 185x5, 225x5
3, Arched back Goodmornings- 185x8, 225x8, 275x5
4.Pull throughs- 100x15, 150x15

Freakin missed the 425 by an inch again. :swear: I don't know what that's about, but nothing I can't fix in 4 weeks. At the comp I want to own that 425. It is my bitch! I finished off with 365x4, wanted 5-6, but was too fatigued by then. At least I drew blood!

Squats felt ok, but I was a bit light-headed from the deads.

Gonna do some heavy arched backs to perhaps help with that last inch lockout of my dead. We'll see. Felt good today.

Pull threoughs felt good. It's been a while since I did them. I see what you mean Adam about not being enough weight. I did the stack and could've kept going. Oh well.

02-01-2002, 10:04 AM
Latty forgot to mention my pulling 405, and it was only the 4th time I've deadlifted.

This almost makes up for missing the 120lb dumbells on monday.

LOL I'd be prouder if friggin spidey didn't just tell me he deads more than that

Chris Rodgers
02-01-2002, 10:11 AM
Also have to add how proud I am of mah girlfriend. She is already up to doing 95 lbs on both squats and deads!! She'll be up to a plate pretty damn soon! She is hardcore!

Too many damn journals. I keep having to search for mine. I remember when only like 3 of us actually used them, lol.

1.Wide grip chins- bw 2x8(not to failure)
2.HS Hi row- 230x6, 180x9
3.Underhand pulldowns- 2 sets 100, 130
4.DB rows- 110x3(too heavy), 75x10(easy)
5.HS low row?- 2 sets 140, 180
6.Reverse pec deck- 1 set
7.Alt DB curls- 1 set 40 lbers
8.BB preacher curls- 2 sets
9.Some ab work

Another good session. I woke up real late(35 mins to workout and didn't really eat anything. Still felt good once we got rollin. I'm not positive what the second hammer strength row was called, but we gripped it overhand and brought it in at about chest level with arms out and back. Good machine.

Beercan and I always seem to have good back workouts. It's definitely an area where we each seem to be good at developing, plus we don't attempt a max, like in deads, benches and squats. I dunno.

Gonna have an ace push session on Wednesday. Heavy bench+heavy dips=ACE!!

Since my girlfriend was working this morning, I took her to the gym tonight and trained her. She did basically the same lifts that 'can and I did this morning. At the end of her workout, I went over to the power rack because I wanted to do a clean and press from the floor. This is one of the events in the strongman comp I might enter and I never really attemted them. Did em real quick and they felt good, even though I had done a heavy pull session 12 hours earlier in the day. I did:

65x1, 95x1, 115x1, 125x1, 135x1

Then the gym closed. :p I feel I could have done more today and I wasn't at my best. So I think I would have a decent showing in these for a lightweight.

Shaddap foo! I said lifts, not lbs.

DUDE! I'm stronger than you in one lift! That kicks ass!

Clean and press rocks :D

By one rep. And on his first attempt.

Quite spectacular, indeed.

STFU power, I was only fukin with him.

I would highly doubt that I would be able to clean more than someone who can dl 400+....

1.Flat bench press- 195x4
2.Flat DB press- 85'sx4
3.Pec deck- 2 sets -105, 150
4.Dips-bw+90x6, bw+70x7
5.Inc. machine press- 180x5, 165x6or7(can't remember)
6.Push press- 95x4, 115x0 wtf?, 95x6
7.V-bar pressdowns- 2 sets- 90, 80

ACE session!! Progression all over the place. Before last week, 190x3 was my best bench for reps. Then I hit 190x4, then this week hit 195x4. So I feel good about that. I plan on hitting a triple with 200 next week.

Dips felt sweet. Form was great on those and they murdered my chest. Beercan outdid me by doing a few reps with 115. I'll be there soon.

Weight- 157 Going up slow and steady like I want it to, even though I have been eating like crap.

02-06-2002, 10:24 AM
Flat bench press- 190x4, 215xfailed

Doesn't look like 190x3 to me :)

Chris Rodgers

I know, I said up until last week the best I had hit was 190x3. Then last week I hit 190x4. FOO!!

1.Deadlifts-315x2, 405x2
2.*Rack pulls-455x1
3.Zerchers-185x3, 225x3, 275x4
4.Leg press- LMAO!! Followed by 1 set of calf raise on here-3 plates
5.Static holds- 405x1(easy), 455x1(harder, maybe 6 seconds)

That is all. About an hour in the power rack. I only stepped out of it to fook with the leg press and because of a combination of being shot, foot placement and being a weak biatch I nearly got crushed from only 4 plates. LOL Beercan had to help me get the sled thing up. My legs just gave out. Oh well.

PR's on deadlift and zerchers!! Sup Powerman? Had to one up ya. ;)

* the power rack in the gym sucks so the rack pulls are too high. The pins are right at my mid-knee level, so it kinda sux. Really not much point to doing those.

1.HS Hi row- 140x8, 180x10, 250x4
2.DB rows- 100x7, 100x5
3.HS low row- 180x10, 230x5, 140x12(2-3 second pause at contraction)
4.Wide grip pulldowns- 1 set- 130
5.Same grip chins- 1 set @bw
6.BB Preacher curls- 2 sets
7.Straight bar cable curls- 2 sets
8.Reverse pec deck- 2 sets

We used a ton of machines today, but I had a sick workout. My last blew up after like 2 exercises and we just kept punishing them.HS low row is becoming a favorite.

Bench on Wednesday!!

02-11-2002, 09:43 AM
I still don;t understand why you do so many variations on the horizontal and vertical rows Latty. Same for curls.

Anyhoo, ace job man.

Today was actually a low volume back day LOL

It's funny, since we both have such genetically awesome backs, we're fully pumped after the first set. The rest is just for fun. (seriously)

This week I am planning on hitting a PR on bench for the 3rd straight week.

Chris Rodgers
02-13-2002, 09:46 AM

1.Flat bench press- 200x3
2.Flat DB press- 90'sx2(half-way on third rep)
3.Pec deck- 2 sets- 120,150
4.Dips-bw+100x4, bw+70x6
5.Skull crushers- 1 set 60 lbs(easy)
6.JM presses- 2 sets- 80, 90
7.Seated DB laterals- 1 set- 15 lbs(2 second pause at top)
8.V-bar pressdowns- 1 set- 85

Great session! I have never done more than 1 rep with 200 on bench before and I have never used more than 90 for dips. Next week I'll go 205 on bench and maybe 115 on dips if I feel good.

02-13-2002, 09:48 AM

1.Deadlifts- 335x1, 415x1
2.Squats-225x2, 245x2, 265x2, 285x2, 300x1
3.Arched back goodmornings- 275x5, 315x4,4
4.Decline situps(5 sec pause)- 2 sets- bw, +25
5.Pull throughs- 2 sets- 150(whole stack), +25 lb plate
6.Side Bends- 2 sets- 85, 95

This was an ace workout!!!!!!! That is a personal record on deads, since I never fully locked that 425 a few weeks back. The rep was real slow, but never stopped or hitched.

Squats!!!! I had planned to do like 3 doubles with 245. Felt good so kept going. Did practically a goodmorning on the 2nd rep of 285, but still nailed it. Then bent a little more than I like on 300, but still nailed it. Was very happy about this with no wraps and after heavy deads!!

Heavy goodmornings felt great, as well as all the extra work. Need to find a way to add more weight to the pull throughs. The stack+25 was so easy.I did 12 and could've done 20. Gonna have to try a 45 next time and see from there.

02-15-2002, 10:53 AM
Superb session, Chris!!!

How much are you weighing at present?

02-15-2002, 10:57 AM
how did you attach the 25lb plate to the stack? is there an attachment piece or did you do it some other way?

02-15-2002, 12:49 PM
Awesome session.You're a bad motherf*cker!

02-15-2002, 12:58 PM
CD put the hole in the plate on the pin, sort of hangs off the pin

Chris Rodgers
02-15-2002, 01:06 PM
Yeah, you put one pin in the bottom of the stack, then you put another higher up with the extra plate through it.

Anyway, just went to Gold's with my buddy because he wanted to try out his bench shirt he just got. So he smoked 405 with a good pause, he waited for me to say lift like a judge. He missed the lockout on 425.

Anyway, he started doing lockouts after that and even though I was a bit sore from Wednesday, I said what the hell.

I worked up to a 405 with my bench grip, but the ROM was very small from there. Still, I moved it.

Then we lowered the bar til it was only maybe 4 inches off my chest and I worked up to 245.

Then I decided to do 2 sets of bench, just to see. I threw 185 up like nothing and then did a good single with 205.

I have decided to do a mini-meet next Friday with him, Beercan and whoever else shows up. I'll most likely work up to my openers, just so I can get the feel for doing the three lifts in the right order.

Great day today!

Chris Rodgers
02-15-2002, 01:23 PM
BTW, I forgot to weigh myself this week at the gym. I'll check next week.

I nearly forgot. Nah baby deadlifted 125 for 3 reps today!!!! She's soooo close to pulling a plate it's scary!!!

02-15-2002, 01:49 PM
Ahh that makes sense now.

That's a technique i use, but i've never thought about using two pins and haging the weight higher up on the stack. I usually use a small plate with the pin on the bottom of the stack.

Chris Rodgers
02-18-2002, 09:55 AM

We did pull today. I felt like crap most likely because my diet was terrible this weekend(low in cals) and I lost a few lbs. I stayed nearly the same in strength, maybe dropped a rep or two here and there. We did chins, HS low row, DB row, HS hi row, Close grip pulldowns, BB curls, rear delts and HS bicep curl. Sounds like a lot, but only 2 sets each.

I may go in tomorrow for some speed benches, or light bench/tricep work of some sort. Friday we will do a mini-meet at the local Gold's to prepare for next weeks meet.

Chris Rodgers
02-19-2002, 04:03 PM
Didn't feel real great today, but went to the gym to train my gf, so I did some speed benches 8 sets of 3 with 135- 3 close, 3 med and 2 wide.

Also wanted to give clean and presses another try. Didn't feel real good on them. The clean is no problem, it's the press that gets me. Got up to 135x1 again.

Oh well, 2 rest days and then I do a mini-meet on Friday.

02-19-2002, 04:46 PM
do u know when your shirt is ariveing?

Chris Rodgers
02-19-2002, 05:59 PM
No, but it better be before Friday so I can try it.

Chris Rodgers
02-22-2002, 12:38 PM

Practice meet
Squat- worked up to 315 and missed, 300 hit, 310 missed
Bench- hit 200, hit 205
Deadlift- hit 405, hit 425
Total- 930

All lifts were belt only.

I am happy with that total since I bitched out on squats and didn't go all out on bench. We squatted by the squat rack instead of the power rack. This totally messed me up. I guess I like that feeling of being closed in while in the rack and if I fail, I just go straight down. On the last miss I nearly died. The plates must have been 2 inches off the floor and the bar was about to go over my head before 'can and my buddy grabbed it. Definitely feel better in a rack. I will have my new wraps by the time of the meet.

Paul Stagg

Great Job! :)

Crazy Dead weight

Chris Rodgers
02-25-2002, 09:57 PM
Thanks everyone.

Tonight was my last time lifting until the meet. So the next 4 days will be complete rest from the weights.

1.Pause squats- 95x2 sets, 135x5-6 sets
2.Speed deads- 135x2 sets, 185x2 sets, 225x2 sets
3.BB rows(over/under)- 135x5/5, 135x5/5
4.Speed benches- 110x3-4 sets

Didn't go too crazy tonight, just had to get in the gym one last time. Hips were still a little tender from heavy work on Friday. They will be fine by the meet.

I weighed in at home this morning at 148. Tonight at the gym I was 150. I also ate Burger King today :p , so that was expected. I will have no problem weighing in under 148 at the meet, so I am excited about that.

02-25-2002, 09:59 PM
Damn dude..almost at that 3x bodyweight.

Chris Rodgers
02-25-2002, 10:05 PM
Closing in man. Actually, now I will write out my plan for this meet.

148 lb class
1st attempt 2nd attempt 3rd attempt*
Squat- 300 315 330
Bench- 200 215 230
Deads- 405 425 440**
Total- 905 955 1,000

So, my first attempts are lifts I am 100% confident I will make. My 2nd's are my current PR's. My thirds would all be PR's and f=give that even 1,000.

*These will be the most likely attempts if the first 2 for each lift go smoothly.

** would be a 3xbw dead if I weigh in at 146.66 lbs or less. :p

02-26-2002, 01:13 PM
How tall are you and whats your bf% at?

Chris Rodgers
02-27-2002, 08:07 PM
5'7", no idea about bf%.

Chris Rodgers
02-27-2002, 08:22 PM

02-28-2002, 04:35 AM

03-01-2002, 10:39 AM
Good luck latty! go for the 3xbw dead!!

Chris Rodgers
03-02-2002, 08:49 PM
OK, back from the meet. Went very well and I learned a ton that will help me in future meets. Had a great time and hit a few PR's. Of all the lifts I actually had my worst day deadlifting, lol. I think it was a combination of it being over 6 hours after the meet started by the time we did deads, I hadn't really eaten anything and the mat we were pulling from was so damn slippery my foot slid on 2 attempts. Anyway, went like this:

Weigh in- 146 lbs

Squats- 300(miss), 300, 320!
Bench- 205, 225!, 240!
Deadlifts- 405, 425(miss), 440(miss)
Total- 965

The first squat got messed up because the bar was set one notch too high and when I came back I lost my balance. By the time I squatted it, I lost my stance coming up and took a half-step forward, so it didn't count. I got damn deep as the tape we took showed on all my squat attempts so that is good. I feel I was good for 330 or so on this day. I actually had the best bench in my class, which was the biggest(9 lifters) and I finished in 2nd place(1st place got 1,010@148). I feel on the floor I could have pulled the 425, not the 440 on this day, but oh well. I'm glad I did well on my poorer lifts and had a decent showing.

Squat- belt and wraps
Bench- bench shirt
Deads- belt

Beercan did well too, my other buddy had the biggest squat(650) but he even said it wasn't low enough and the tape showed it, but they counted it.

03-02-2002, 08:56 PM
Hey man. Great job! Skinny bastard! ;)

Thank you everyone. The bench was a huge surprise. The shirt felt so much better than it did in the lighter attempts on Thursday night.

Adam- not too sure about that, but my friend said last year the meet results were posted in Powerlifting USA. So maybe in one of the next few issues. Who knows.

03-03-2002, 04:09 PM
Excellent, man! Very well done.

03-04-2002, 06:52 PM
Damn good job foo. Sucks about the deadlift though. Why was the mat wet? Also...if you failed on 425, why did you try for 440? What do you think your bench would've been without the shirt? Anyway, damn good job overall..next time you got 'em!

chris mason
03-04-2002, 07:38 PM
Good job man! I didn't know the meet was so soon. I would have driven up to see it. Let me know next time.

Chris Rodgers
03-04-2002, 07:58 PM
Heath- the mat wasn't wet, it just sucked. It was very slippery and the way that Beercan and I do deads(very-wide sumo) was not helping any.

Only reason I tried for the 440 was that I already hit 2 PR's and already had a good dead(405), the 440 would have given me two thing: a 3xbw dead and 1,000 lb total. I said what the hell and got it a whopping 3 inches off the floor before my left foot slid. Oh well. The bench was a huge surprise. I think I may have been able to swing a 220 raw, but I really have no idea. The shirt definitely helped.

Chris- I had no idea you'd be interested. Next time I do a meet in the area, I'll definitely announce it sooner. I just found out about this one recently, didn't really train for it either.
