The answer above is correct. There is actually much more depending on the form of the carb but the above is a more than sufficient answer.

Also they help to keep your body from catabolizing muscles when absorbed immediately after a workout.

Ok well lets dive a little deeper, and find out in what purpose there best needed.

Their best purpose would be for energy for your body to work throughout the day. As stated above depending on multiple factors this can be anything from getting out of bed to digesting food. Also depending on the carb etc etc

you want simple?
carbs = energy
protein = tissue repair
fat = lubrication of joints, skin, proper bodily functions

you want simple?
carbs = energy

fat = lubrication of joints, skin, proper bodily functions
Protein = hydrolysis to amino acids =
- transport proteins
- immunoproteins
- enzymes
- structural proteins
- nonstructural proteins and nitrogen containing compoiunds
- plasma proteins
- peptide hormones
- and protein secretion which either form digestive enzymes or endogenous protein.

With even giving a simple answer, you can't limit protein function to only tissue repair.

(side note: the protein you eat does not magicially stay in that eaxct amino acid sequence and perform jobs within the body...I think alot of people don't realize this)

Carbohydrates are the main energy source for the human body.
On a real technical level, ATP is really the driving force behind energy-consuming activities of the cell.

Carbohydrates are the main source of fuel from the diet though.

guilty as charged...I know I over-simplified to the extreme, but that was my goal :)
