Got a question for all ya'll knowledgable people in Diet Land. I drank a Sugar Free No Fear before I worked out, and it seemed to bring me out of my usual no energy stage. Is there anything I can take (no sugar) that will help give me a slight boost of energy before I hit the gym?

Caffeine.

Just pure caffeine pills? How much would ya recommend for someone that doesn't really take in much caffeine from anywhere else?

I don't know. I don't take caffeine in pill form, or any other. I would post this in the supplement forum though. Ask a mod to switch it for you.

What's in "no fear?" A couple of generic suggestions:

Drink 1L of water within an hour of working out.
2-3 high quality meals before you train.
Good night sleep. ;)
Green Tea.
Ephedrine.

I had the same problem and simply adjusted my diet a bit so I take in more calories in the hours before my workout and that's working great for me. Now I'm eating, probably 50% of my day's calories in the 2 hours before and 2 hours after my workout and I'm much happier with my results and energy. (I always felt messed up after my workout too, but the extra food has fixed that)

Thanks guys.

Anthony-

No Fear contains:

2g Taurine
200mg Inositol
100mg Panax Ginseng
100mg Gaurana
50mg Creatine
50mg Grape Seed Extract
50mg L-Carnitine
20mg L-Arginine
Vitamin C
Folic Acid
Vitamin B6
Vitamin B12
Selenium

Anything in there that looks as though it would give me a boost in energy, or was it simply mind over matter, and I just thought I should be getting one?

What's the active stuff in Green Tea that is supposed to bump energy levels? Anything in pill form that you'd recommend?

Gracias Midget.

Maybe the ginseng, but the dosage seems low. I'm not sure if the others are stimulants or not, I'd have to look into it.

As for green tea, it contains caffeine (along with a bunch of really good things). Check out more here: http://healthlibrary.epnet.com/GetContent.aspx?token=2f013354-aed3-4319-b034-45acd76f4b1c&chunkiid=21771

Thanks for the link Ant. I'll have to stop by and see if I can find some Green Tea Extract pills to pop, seeing as how making three cups of tea along with everything else will just be aggravating at best.

I eat my largest meal of the day 2 hours before lifting and I also have a bunch of coffee.

i take a ginseng with royal jelly rush pill (2 daily) and after a while i've been a lot more energetic lately. the "rush" is where the caffene comes in, along with the ginseng.

taking it before you work out likely won't do much, i just keep a steady stream in my system since i don't drink coffee.

I take 200g caffeine before I train (pill), and sip whey with dextrose during my workout.

Caffeine and L-Tyrosine works well.

I keep meaning to try the L-tyrosine.

How much do you take, Maki?

Maki Riddington

2-3 grams per 200 mg of caffeine. I find that it also gives me some clarity of mind which I really like, especially if I know I have a tough workout ahead of me.

Have you tried just eating a good meal with some slow digesting, low GI carbs (eg. any whole grain) about 2 hrs before your workout? This is the best way to get energy without sugar or drugs.

Ginseng is a neat herb that I've been meaning to dabble with, the same goes with Royal jelly. Apparently there are many forms of ginseng which exert different effects on the body.

I train a lot of Chinese clients who give me some weird stuff to try for colds , joint pains etc. It's very interesting.

Yes, and I get to avoid that icky coffee taste. Bleah.

Honey, I don't know how ANYBODY trains without food in 'em.

But you make it sound like drugs and sugar are BAD things!

Caffeine helps mobilize fat stores.

And dextrose stimulates the insulin response that shuttles nutrients into your muscles.

Mmmm.... sugar and drugs...

:)

lol, I didn't say sugar is bad. Chubrock asked about getting more energy without sugar. Maybe he's not eating enough carbs in his pre-workout meal. Just an idea....if all he needs is energy. All I know is that I have plenty of energy for my workouts and I don't use any caffeine, ephedrine, crystal meth or any stimulants.

But if he wants to mobilize fat stores, maybe caffeine is the way to go. :D

I often bring at least 1000 calories an hour or a bit more before a workout, roughly 80-100 grams of that from slow digesting carbs. I just find that with my studies in school, driving back and forth to BJJ for two hours twice a week, and trying to get Accounting (course) work done, I often lack that bit of energy I used to have in the gym. I'm still progressing in my lifts on a regular basis, so I doubt I could be overtraining.

As far as taking something, both Built and Maki recommend what, roughly 200mg of Caffeine before the workout?

Maki, or anybody for that matter, what exactly is L-tyrosine, and how much would you recommend I take?

haha...I'm sure it works better than caffeine. Maybe I'll give it a try this week. :)
