First a short intro- i'm a 22 yr-old male, 6 feet tall and weigh 180 lbs..i'm trying to shed some belly fat and bulk up a little as well. I'm watching my diet and cutting out a lot of unnecessary carbs and calories. I'm also starting to work out and lift more routinely. I know that adding protein is a good baseline for more fit body, so I recently purchased a 2 lb container of the Mega Whey Protein from GNC to drink for breakfast. But that 2 lb tub was $35 plus tax, which is kinda pricey..so I'm wondering if any of you know a website or store that I should check out (in the San Francisco Area) that is cheaper.
also if you have any added advice for me, it's appreciated..thanks

I've gotten great service from them over the last year or two, and the prices are pretty good.
Of course, almost anybody has better prices than GNC.

Really? With my gold card membership a GNC I get ON Whey for 68 cents Canadian a serving if I get a 5lb tub, after tax. It's even cheaper if I get a 10lb dogfood bag but I can't take the same flavor for that long. Cheaper than tuna. Thought it was a good price?
Of course, I was just comparing it with getting Nitrean shipped to me. USD conversion + shipping fees + HST = 5 dollars more and the hassle of dealing with what has to be the worst post office in the country for a 70-80 serving vat.

Costco has cheap whey is thats what you want. I use to use that before I tried Nitrean from at large. Nitrean is a bit more expensive, but a FAR FAR FAR superior product. Taste, mixture, and a MUCH better protein blend. I suggest ordering 2-3 tubs of nitrean, along with some creatine 500, some ETS, and maybe some thermocin if your ready for that.

I prefer quality over price. ON and Nitrean are 'better' than costco's whey, I believe?

TP's whey protein concentrate is about 28 cents US per serving (25 if you buy 10 pounds), with each serving having 23 grams of protein. Shipping brings it up to maybe 44 cents.
Of course, you can't beat the convenience of walking in and buying it as opposed to having it shipped.
I just buy the unflavored stuff, and mix it with milk, yogurt, fruit or whatever for flavor, as I dislike most of the flavored protein powders. I get both the WPC and MPI.

Probably, but I'm curious as to what you're basing that on.
I suspect that most of the actual protein is coming from a handful of wholesalers, and the real differences are in the flavoring and other additives.

I use Body Fortress from Sam's Club. You get what you pay for. The "vanilla" flavor I have right now tastes like really bad coffee.

i only paid like 23 bucks for a tub of whey protein at GNC. didn't think that was too bad of a price =)
I have noticed recently that the brand of whey they sell at costco (Pro-Rated...i think) has recently changed their formula to a blend similar to ON Pro-Complex and ALN Nitrean. They now sell the blended powder formula in 6lbs. bags for about $24-25.00. If price is a factor...that is pretty cheap for a blend. I haven't tried it yet but I am thinking about it just to see how it tastes. Somehow though, I don't think it will beat the taste of ALN's Nitrean.

Bob,
As a newbie lifter, you'll likely enjoy a honeymoon period with lifting, where you'll drop some fat and put on some muscle.
What's your routine look like now, and could you describe your diet?
Is there some reason why you can't just eat eggs for breakfast?

All the whey used to be the cheapest about a year ago but they have since raised their prices. ON is now cheaper from DPS.

At the risk of being redundant your question should be, "Where can I buy the best protein supplement at a reasonable price?"
The answer would be www.atlargenutrition.com .
A whey only product is NOT as good as a quality blend like Nitrean (whey, casein, and egg proteins). Our product will provide a superior bet retention of ingested protein per gram of powder ingested. That means that while we might be fractions of a cent higher per gram of powder our product will provide more bang for your buck. You spend a lot of time and effort working on your body why not give it the best?

I wouldn't necessarily say I'm a 'newbie' to lifting, but I haven't been as consistant as I would like to be the last few years..college and partying was a big reason why. Now I graduated and I'm focusing on getting rid of my belly fat and bulking up a bit all over, especially in the upper body.
I'm really trying to watch what I eat..here's a typical day for me
breakfast: whey protein shake (40 g) + banana blended in; multivitamin & 1000 mg fish oil pill. I'm really slow in the morning so if I made eggs I would be even later to work than I already am.
lunch: green salad (sometimes with chicken) or sandwich, a few chips, apple, water
dinner: varies-- usually meat (steak, chicken, pork), vegetable side (broccoli, cauliflower, or cucumber), green salad and a glass of 2% milk
or sometimes just a vegetable soup
and i drink a decent amount of water throughout the day..especially if i get hungry
as far as exercising..I don't have much equipment to work with..I'm using two 40 LB adjustable dumbells and set of 9 LBers to work shoulders..
-I jog about 1.5 miles 2-3 days a week
-100 crunches a day, 50 side crunches (both sides)
-50 pushups
-3 sets of 12 shoulder raises with the 9 lbs
every other day I do
-3-4 sets of 8 bicep curls
-2 sets of 25 overhead tricep raises
-2 sets of 25 elevated push-ups
i'm seriously thinking about joing a gym so I can have access to more equipment b/c I'm extremely limited as to what muscles/areas I can work with what I have.
If anyone has any suggestions of other exercises I can do with dumbells or just body weight, feel free to give them..

They sell 50 lbs of it now? OK that explains it. Back a year ago when I bought from them 10 lbs was the biggest size they sold.

haha..true, i'm trying to get a full-time job at the moment, (which is like a full-time job in itself)..and plan on joining a gym once my finances and schedule allow it.
i should also have added that during my recent college years, i would work out at the gym a few times a week..i wish i had taken more advantage of the facilities tho b/c they were 100% free..oh well
depending on how much the gym costs, and your financial situation, investing in a power rack with an adjustable bench might not be a bad idea

I look for taste, texture after it's mixed, and quality. Nitrean from at large nutrition is by far the best I've ever had.
