View Full Version : What's a Hernia feel like?

So I was lifting on Sunday, I was doing leg raises (or whatever they're called) you lay down on a bench, hold onto the bar, and lift your legs up, then raise your back up off the bench so your butts in the air and your legs are 90 degrees to your body, it targets both the abdominals and hip flexors.) Anyhoo, I was on my second set and I started to get this really kind of intense feeling of pain/tingling kind of all around my lower abdominal area, and it kind of extended all the way into my manhood, I know what hernias are and I know why the doctor checks to see if your balls ascend when you cough etc, and the whole combination of pressure on my abdominals plus pain/tingling in both by abdominals and special region kind of sent up a warning flag, so I immediately stopped working out because I didn't really want to risk it. I have no pain now, so I obviously don't have a hernia, but is this something to be careful about, or is it just that being as the hip flexors are located so close, that especially during times or muscular stress tingling senstations aren't really anything to worry about?

jsut throwing out a guess here, while doing this exercise, u are bending ur neck/shoulder region and in turn may be pinching one of the spinal nerves, or even one of the cranial nerves (don't know if any go to the abdominal or "special" regions though)... hth... somebody with more knowledge will shed light on this.

Most of the time, you will not "feel" a hernia. There may be a protrusion in the lower abdominal region that may be fairly noticeable, but is rarely painful.
Go to the doctor if you are worried about it.

I think I may have given myself a mild hernia yesterday too. Is this something that would heal itself if left alone for awhile or do I need to go see a doctor about it?

Well from what i understand, a hernia is part of ur intestines trying to come out of ur abdomen. That being said, people lives with hernias their whole lives and never see a doctor for them. However, with the amount of stress that we put on our body it would definately be wise to see a doctor if you actually think u have a mild hernia (is there a small lump somewhere around where ur intestines are?)

Ya thanks. I've been checking some of the symptoms out on the net. I just get a dull pain in my nether regions when I move a certain way. I'm pretty sure it's not actually a hernia, but I think I will get it checked out just to be safe.

It does not heal itself. It's usually a small tear in the abdominal wall where your intestines poke through.
Surgery is the only way to fix it, but most ppl do not opt to have surgery if it does not interfere with their everyday lifestyle.
BUT you being a lifter, I would at least go to the doctor to have it checked out. Last time I thought I had one, it was nothing. I'm a hypo tho.
My dad has had multiple hernias, and has had some repaired. They basically cut you open and mend the tear and of course push the intestine back behind the wall where it should be.
I'm not too sure on recovery time, but I would imagine liftin would be out of the picture for a while. I'm sure it's really easy to bust open internal stitching by doing deads or squats.

I had a massive one (5 inches popped out) a few years ago.
I had it for a year. It felt just weird all the time. when I lifted there was a defiant small bulge.
it feels just uncomfortable.
About 5 hrs after i squat or deadlift or do core, I have this small pain left of my belly button. No lump, doesn't hurt during lifting, just when i poke it. Is this an abdominal issue or something else?

not having pain doesn't mean you don't have a hernia. it's sometimes uncomfortable, but rarely painful.

I went to the doc and he said that it was likely just a groin pull. He told me to lay off the lifting for a month just to be safe. I don't think I'm going to listen to him though.
Groin pull? How high up is it? In relation to your belly button?

I don't know. I don't really feel any pain anymore. Last night and this morning I felt a dull pain in my groin area when I would move a certain way, but it dissappeared by the time I went to the doctor's. He just said that he couldn't notice any signs of an hernia and he thought it was just a groin pull.
I'm about to go do some back work (minus deadlifts), so I'll see how it feels.
