Since I need to rant every once in a while, here is mine...

If you are strong enough to lift the weight, put it down nicely. It drives me nuts to see guys at my gym dead lift and then drop the weight almost as loud as they can. They do it with 135 all the way up to 500. When I did my personal record at 465, I set the weight down in the same manner than I picked it up.

There, I feel better now.

Thanks,

Gabriel

Sorry. My interest is in getting the weight to lockout. Everything else be damned.

I'm with the big guy on this one. I lock it out and after that its Free-falling baby! lol

While the upward part of the lift is all that matters in a competetion... their is a whole other half. Think of it as benching like this. Controlling the weight up and then just basically dropping it down to your chest, bouncing it off and repping again.

Actually, the "other half" does not exist. There is no negative portion of a deadlift and treating it as such is a good way to get injured. Other lifts, such as RDLs and SLDLs serve this purpose in a much safer manner.
The point of the deadlift is to get the mother****ing weight up without ****ing yourself in the process. Period.

On that note, I do my best to set the weight down nicely, and think it's a little obnoxious when people drop it from waist height if they don't need to- but I do not treat it as a negative portion of the lift.

Isnt the negative portion the part people hurt themselves the most on? If you screw up the negative and round youre back youre pretty much a goner.

i agree with controlling your weight the entire time.. specifically with dumbells. a bunch of guys just drop the dbs theyre using from hip height when theyre done with whatever set they are doing.. how hard is it to put them down?

what it comes down to is that either youre too weak to control your weight or youre too lazy to use etiquette and safety - in which case i hope the gym revokes your membership

working with heavy bb weight? i understand the effects of gravity, no problem there in my opinion

If you can't handle a little noise of clanging plates in the gym, buy an iPod find another way to get over it.

I will say that many gyms don't seem to have proper rubber matting for the floors, which leads to louder sounding drops on heavy stuff like deads, etc.

But am I going to worry about a 'controlled descent' on a deadlift for the sake of the others around me that might be offended by the noise? Hell no.

Bumper Plates anyone?

Not all gyms have those, they still make noise though if you drop them from high enough muhha(evil laugh).

Just don't destroy the equipment for everyone else.

If it makes you feel like a man to drop the weight and grin, go right ahead. I can understand that having a tiny penis can be rough on some of you all, so I won't stand in the way of your petty ego builders.

I set the weight down. Not so slow I exhaust myself or hurt myself, but slow enough to show respect for the equipment and fellow gym rats.

And I have a huge dong.

Some people are just stupid about it, but I see no problem clanging the weight if there's no damage to the floor or the plates. Hell, if you have rubber plates and a good platform, let that baby bounce.

Meh. I nearly always control the weight down, unless it's ****ing really heavy and I feel like I might drop it accidentally. I think it's silly to drop anything and everything; also, none of my gyms have deadlifting areas or bumperplates. Obviously, if you've got those capabilities you have more leeway. Also, insert Gyno's last sentence here:

I put the weight down with as much caution as I pick it up. Maybe that's why my grip totally blows out at 240 (well, maybe not. My weak ass grip fails me now on every exercise) but I try and put the weight down as if it were made of glass.

Just do what I do.

You can't be me, so emulation is the closest you'll ever come to supreme power.

Be courteous and don't bust stuff.

You CAN control the negative in this exercise - if you choose not to, that's fine. But there are benefits to doing so as with pretty much any exercise.

Y'all should just admit you're dropping the weight to be cool.

I unrack even max weights, lift them, then rerack them. However, I am from now on loading the plate and lifting it straight from the ground like others have done for a long time. This will certainly aid me. Don't laugh. I'm a work in progress.

for all you that say that controlling the decent is pointless, i hope you are never in a powerlifting competition. it's a rule that you have to control the decent as much as you can. look at any wr deadlift video. if those guys can set their weight back down, you can too. i have seen a few people not only dq'd, but kicked out of meets for throwing the weight down.

im sorry but i guess this is a pet peeve i have too. it pisses me off to see people do this.

case in point.

You should get your ass back in there and see if anything has changed since 1989..

Bite me it was 87. If you drop into my new journal you would see that it is starting all over again. As a matter of fact I even survived senior night and made it up there under my own steam. :D
