Avocado's were on sale at the grocery store yesterday for $1.00 each, so I picked a couple up. The only problem is I've never eaten an avocado (aside from in guacamole), so I'm not quite sure how to eat it. Peel it and then slice it? Cut it in half and scoop out the inside? Salt or pepper?

UMTERP- I love em just like you said. slice em around longwise, split em in two take a spoon dig out the pit and use the spoon to remove it from the lovely peel. Sometimes if they are just ripe I will just pinch the peel and mash a half right out into my mouth. I also love topping my salad with them. Great nutritonal value although I found out in my readings this past weekend that the guava is the best source of multiple nutrients. I have no idea what a guava is but I am going to find out!!

i like to put sliced avacado on sammiches or salads, or even try to make a healthy guacamole with some salsa mixed in and top sammiches or dip pita chips in...

i like to do the cut and scoop thing, but scoop it into a bowl, mash it up with a fork, put a few drops of lime juice in and ur golden :). and if it's not a praticularly good tasting avocado, just add a little bit of sweetener or sugar.

1.00$ each is very expensive! Unless they're that over 450 calories kind.

I like to just cut them in half and scoop out the inside.

Thanks for the responses. I'll give it a try tomorrow. If it turns out I like it and want to keep buying them, I guess I'll have to look around at other stores. I didn't realize $1.00 each was expensive for an avocado. I've never bought one before.

I really love avacado too! Its great with salad...on the side of a plate with rice, lemon juice on top...yum!!
just be care if you ever think of slicing out the pit with a knife...they are super slippery....I sliced my middle finger open with a henkle once. ONCE only....lesson learned.
It makes for lame workout...and either way...

Terp- $ 1.00 each where I am at ( Midwest ) is a good price. I bet down south they are a little less expensive.

In a salad with lots of salt. On a sandwich. And I understand that in the Philippines they put 'em in milkshakes.

Avocado's are delicious! Whatever you do though! Don't feed them to birds! Once we did years ago, and it died! Lesson learned...

Seriously?! i'd think that it'd be fine for birds to digest them. i'm assuming in the wild birds feed on them. Interesting nonetheless.

make sure the avocados are soft before you cut them... it tastes better when they're fully ripe

Sorry to bring up an old thread but how do you guys store your avocados?

I hear they can go bad rather quickly.. and I was gonna use lemon juice and seal it in an air tight plastic container in the fridge to prevent oxidation.

Also, can I keep avocados in the same container with other foods? (I have rice, onions and chicken in a tupperware container and was wondering if the avocados would spoil if I put them in there?)

even if they start going a bit brown, they're still good, and after you've opened one up, and it starts getting brown, it's still good. I keep mine when i have them int he fridge if they're getting really ripe, if not, i just keep them on the counter... and once i mash them up (i eat them in a paste), i just leave it in a bowl with plastic wrap right on top so it doesn't turn too brown :).

Actually, I've heard that removing the pit slows/halts ethylene production, so if you only eat half and throw out the core, you should be good if you place the uneaten half in a plastic baggie in the fridge for a day or two. Also, put a little lemon juice on said uneaten half, and that will slow any browning (works with apples, too).

I usually grab the ones w/ a dark skin and slightly soft to the touch.
