kobayashi (spelling?) i just saw a glimpse of him at that all-you-can-eat sushi place and that was unbelievable...he basically has a bottomless pit for a stomach and no gag or sickness reflexes whatsoever...

Yea, that was amazing. What did the cook say, 25 ibs of food?

Some of his lifts were pretty impressive. I caught bits and pieces, but his bench looked like a good 250+, and he was doing low-thigh rack pulls with 4PPS+change.

He can't weigh any more than, say, 180.

This may or may not be commonsense, but I don't think competitive eaters generally digest most of the food they eat for training...

btw, I saw an episode or two of the eating competition shows they had in Japan - they were absolutely insane. I think they cancelled the shows because a competitor died.

Are you suggesting that they puke it all out or that such a large amount of food cannot be digested at one time and it just passes right through them?

I've had some big craps in my life, but I think after eating 53 hotdogs and buns it would top any I've had.

Curtousy flush, please.

KevinStarke

Most of them puke up the bulk of the food they eat at the competitions after the competitions themselves. Kobayashi is nuts, freakin 8 pack.

I thought it was funny when Kobayashi was talkin about how a couple hrs after the competition his skin and whole body would start to smell like hotdogs. And yea I cant imagine what it would be like to be on the toilet after a competition, if they managed to keep it all down.

But if you logically think about it...competitive eating is the biggest portrayal of American gluttony there is. I mean there are kids and whole families in Africa who would love just 1 hot dog and yet these guys are seeing how many they can eat in 12 minutes and then puking it up after the "competition" anyway...im not saying that competitive eating is the devil and it should be abolished, but i mean there are so many better ways to "spend" this food that in the end is just coming back up.

they showed him leaving the compitition and his stomoch was fully stretched, he said, pointing to his stomoch: "give this a good 12 hours, and it will have fully digested"

how can you manage that much food/that many calories with so little fat gain?

i wonder if they starve themselves for days before they eat, or if before the competition they just stick like raw eggs and oil down there throat to empty out their stomach?

ShockBoxer
02-24-2006, 07:38 AM
Quite possibly both... though maybe not the starving so much. I find if I'm starving, truly 'stomach hurts I'm so hungry' starving, that I can't eat as much. I feel full really quickly in that state. Not hungry or slightly hungry are the best states for me to eat an entire apple pie, for example.

I'm guessing previous to contest day they drink a LOT of water to stretch their stomach's physical size a little. Water is perfect for this... you just have to drink to and past 'pain'. The stomach will shrink again, of course, but it's not immediate.

Competitive eaters TRAIN their stomachs. I already said this but even though they don't talk about it, they puke it out.

I'm doing a contest in a few weeks at a local place called The Beef House to see who can eat the most Beef House Rolls. They are famous for their sweet rolls. I'm not really going in to try to win or anything. I just want a bunch of free rolls since they are sublimely delicious.

Takeru Kobyashi is crazy. It takes a hell of a lot more mental capabilities then it does anything else in that sport.

D Breyer

i wonder if they starve themselves for days before they eat,
i would think that would be completely counter-productive to their training... the stomoch would shrink, not allowing it to be as "stretchy?" as it would be had they not starved themselves. Don't get me wrong i bet they come in to comps with an empty stomoch, but i doubt they would starve days before the comp...

this guy was nuts.

after eating so much how does he remain so lean? i doubt he pukes it out because they showed him after each meal with his stomach all expanded on a bus and talking about how in 12 hours his stomach will digest alll the food etc.

Doubt it, your stomach would physically not be able to hold that. A normal stomach I believe can hold ~3L or so. I am guessing his stomach is just abnormally hyoooge/stretched ...combine that with a insane eating technique/gage reflex control and he can mow down.

ShockBoxer
02-26-2006, 08:14 AM
Well, let's look at it this way... say he takes in 13,000 on a hot dog binge day and doesn't later off camera spend a miserable 15 minutes worshipping the great porcellin idol while weeping and questioning why he does this to himself. Let's say his maintenance is 2000 (it's not... look at him. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a hardgainer and his maint is closer to 4k). 11,000 surplus is 3 lbs. Whee. Most people here can cut that in three weeks.

I'm sure he doesn't compete or 'train to failure' (such as it is) every day.

Majestic
02-26-2006, 10:09 AM
I don't if you guys missed the early part of the show or not, but he admitted and explained that he's got an inherited condition (his father has it too) that causes his stomach to "sit" far lower in his body than the average person. He expanded his stomach to demonstrate this.

Not sure if it has anything to do with his eating skills. I'm sure it's just another component combined with the training, the Winny, the cardio, the puking, etc.

I mean the guy almost doubled his closest competitor, if I remember correctly.

That may be true, but there are tons of other things that go on like this. Look at the houses some rich people live in and yet my 65 year old grandmother has to work 40 hours a week and still cant pay her own bills, she cant afford the medicines she has to take to live and if it werent for her husband and children se would be left to die while some dickhole walks up his marble staircase.

Life isnt fair in every sense of the word, never has been and never will be. The only way to enjoy it is to stop worrying about everyone else and focus on the good things.

On topic now...

The guy is nuts no doubt... but I've been told (we've had quite a few school semiars about binge eaters and belymics) that even if you do throw up whatever you've binged on that less the 10-15% of the calories are spared. So if he eats 10,000 calories he might have saved himself 1,000 of them.

d'Anconia
02-26-2006, 01:14 PM
^ I am having a hard time believing that. I'm pretty sure your body can not gain any calories from the food until it has started to pass through the small intestine. I would think that if he threw up after the competition that most of the food would still just be in his stomach.

He's actually very smart. At the beginning of the show he talked about how he works out to increase his LBM, and his metabolism to help him eat. He also knows quite a bit about nutrition. It was funny when they showed some of his earlier pictures were he looked about 130, now he looks like he could be 190 or so.
