View Full Version : The pursuit of superior strength

Well, I succeeded in my everlasting cut to defeat obesity. I'm now ~188 at 16% bodyfat. I figured a new journal for a new segment would be appropriate.

I'm not sure of my measurements, but:

Age: 18
Bench: 225x1
Squat (ATF): 205x1
Deadlift (conventional stance): 365x1

I gained a ton of strength in the time since my cut ended. Nice anabolic rebound.

Today's diet:
3,350 calories
Pro: 234 grams
Cho: 221 grams
Fat: 171 grams

Pro: 28%.
Cho: 26%
Fat: 46%.

Workout

Squat (ATF): 140x4, 140x4, 180x2

Leg press: lots of plates x 10 x 10 x 10

I got a very important call and had to leave, but incredible form on the squats = very good workout nonetheless.

I did a chest workout this morning.

Flat BB bench:
95x6
165x5
175x5
205x3
225xMISS

It was a valiant effort. Managed to save myself without a spotter, too..

Felt sad.. persevered.

Flat DB bench:
65x6
70x9
65x6

I ran a mile and a half in just over twelve minutes. That's all she wrote.

What are your plans now? Bulk, cut, maintain?

What are your plans now? Bulk, cut, maintain?

I'm not really sure. I don't want to lose anymore weight. My goal was never seriously to get ripped this time around. My overall goal was to be "not fat". Now my face isn't fat, I'm pretty much flat in the front, I don't get winded from climbing a flight of stairs. At this point my body is pretty much "normal". I'd like some muscle before cutting any more.

So while I'm not necessarily going for an all out bulk, I am planning to eat slightly above maintenance. I guess this is a super, super clean bulk.

Ideally, I'd like to never hit 20% bf again in my life.

Ideally, I'd like to never hit 20% bf again in my life.

That's the kinda dedication that makes me think you'll actually manage to follow through on this. (I used to be a really pudgy kid and I promised myself at like age 13 or 14 that it had to change). Keep it up, mang.

Weird workout yesterday.

I walked 18 miles, very briskly, in a tshirt.

(I live in Philadelphia, where it was probably ~the freezing point).

It took me about 3.5-4 hours. I felt like I was on DNP. It was strange.

I haven't hit the weights in a few days because I tweaked something in my posterior chain area trying some bodyweight exercises in P.E. class.

Nonetheless, I've been eating tons. I feel great, and very strong. Tons of food + light rest = anabolic happiness.

I'm planning on doing some high volume deads tomorrow with good form to make sure my back's alright.

Well, I never posted it here, but I haven't been posting because I pretty much broke my pinkie in BJJ class. I haven't really done any weights at all, just a lot of cardio- I think I missed two days in the last 30 days.

I was back in the gym this morning, and couldn't get college stuff off my mind. My workout suffered as a result.

(ATF) squats: 165x4, 165x4, 165x4, 145x5, 145x4, 145x4, 145x2, 135x3 = DONE.

This was done in about 25 minutes, and I really wasn't into it.

I just needed to get back in the gym, and figured some squats would definitely reacquaint me.

I'll be back in the gym Saturday with a serious effort, once I get my FAFSA crap straightened out.

Bench personal record!

That's all I went there for.

Got in and out. Am happy.

I thought it would be cool to share that I've decided on attendance at St. John's University (NYC). This will be an interesting and challenging experience for me to move from a small and poor inner city school to a huge private university with a severely divergent demographic and a huge endowment.

It's going to put me in some debt and I'll have to adjust, but I think that being removed from my comfort zone will help me out a ton.

TwiloKike reminded me that I hadn't posted here in a bit..

I did chest today.

Flat BB Bench:

WU:
45x6
95x4

Working Sets:
210x3
220x2
225x2
185x4

Incline DB Bench:
85sx7
85sx5
100sx3

(proud of that last set)

My hand sort of slipped while trying the 4th rep on that last set and so I had quite the impact on my right pec. I went and ran for a bit to see if it could get a tiny bit of rest before going back to weights, since I like to touch on each rep.

Treadmill:

2 miles in 11:58.

Back to weights for a movement I haven't done in a long time...

Flys:

25sx8
35sx6
50sx2
50sx2
50sx1.5

Weird and awkward moment after a long time.

JewMike -Thanks, buddy. You're not doing so badly yourself!

KStarke -Thanks a ton. It really does feel great.. I think that's the first time I've ever used 100s for a chest movement, period. After playing around for so long with heavy barbell benching and toying with some high weight dumbbells in other experimental exercises, I figured it was time for a big weight in chest dumbbells. Much fun.

Back|Biceps day

I did some heavy rack pulls to start off.

Barbell Rack Pulls
295x6
315x6
365x5
385x4
405x1 (PR)

Barbell Rows (Overhand)
135x6
135x6
160x4
205x2
225x1 (PR)

Lat Pulldowns
160x5
180x5
205x2 (rep PR)
205x2

Barbell Curls
95x5
95x5
95x5
95x3
95x1

I think I could have hit a higher weight on the lat pulldown.. but I didn't want to use too much body english haha.

I didn't have much of a choice, unfortunately- one of my female friends got decked by a male.

Seriously, not an incidental shoulder to get to someone else, or a slap to get her out of the way.. a guy targeted her and punched her in the mouth, hard, dropping her.

At that point it was no longer a 10th-11th grade affair. Every single senior jumped in, and the fight was over in about 20 seconds after that. Poor underclass people.

Organichu

It was pretty surreal.. I don't know the entire story of how it started, but it had something to do with the 10th and 11th graders fighting some older guys- grown men, about seven or eight of them. So we have about five sophomores and five juniors being smacked around by seven grown men.

The senior class is pretty much watching impassively, since our peers started it.. at first the older guys were justified. Then they started swinging wildly, and attacking girls. Suddenly thirty eighteen year olds converged on the older guys, and it was over pretty quickly.

My senior class is a surprisingly mature one- hit hard, dealt damage, but didn't do crazy stomping and kicking and **** after it was over. Each one of the guys was hurt pretty badly by the initial rush, though.

Also, everyone involved (except me) was black, and after it was over one of my classmates (again, black) spit on one of the older guys and screamed "NI GG ERS" at the top of his lungs.

I guess we sort of frown on hitting women, heh.

It was crazy, they checked our knuckles and clothes for blood and crap to try to determine who should receive punishment. I was threatened that I might not be able to walk at graduation. Immediately all of my friends piped in, and grabbed the crying girl (who took that blow like a champ, amazingly, despite an enormously split lip) and started screaming at the principal. So we're pretty much off.

My hands hurt.

Organichu
05-06-2006, 06:52 PM
Wow.

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW.

I've been browsing some sites recently, looking at Kevin's and Chris Rodger's journals, basically mentally improving my squat form. Good news...

My squats are FAR stronger than I thought! I used to stop because of back pain, and just poor explosion and whatnot.. my legs get more taxed from squat volume than the actual weight.

I squatted 265 (ATF) today. That's a 60 lb increase, just from doing some light squats with a bar and a lot of considering. And I actually felt it very much in my quads the entire time.

I dumped 280 lol.

KevinStarke
05-06-2006, 07:23 PM
Dayam 60 lb PR, congrats man.

Organichu
05-06-2006, 07:40 PM

Another cool thing is that since this utilizes my quads more, I think I'll actually be gaining a bit faster on squats now. I guess my 1,000 total by Christmas is now slightly less idealistic.

ADDENDUM: that would be something to the tune of...

Bench Press (1 REP): 285
Squat, ATF (1 REP): 315
Deadlift (1 REP): 400

I'm seriously not slacking off.. I haven't missed a single weight training session in the last three weeks. I'm just really awful with updating this thing, lol. Wow.

You know, I've gone from 250+ lbs @ 30+% BF to over 210 lbs @ under 20% BF... so apparently I can do this without keeping a journal.

But I think that I need more discipline in my life so I'm going to keep a journal anyway just for the sake of posterity & self-improvement.

Today I ate:

Meal 1:
(14) oz chicken breast
(2) cup boiled & drained broccoli
(2) scoops Nitrean in skim milk

Meal 2:
(14) oz chicken breast)
(1) scoop Nitrean in skim milk
(64) oz water

Meal 3:

(4) large whole wheat bread slices
(2) tbspns low calorie mayonnaise

Meal 4:
(3) cups whole wheat spaghetti w/ red sauce & clams
(4) large whole wheat bread slices, toasted
(32) oz water

Snack:
(5) tblspns almond butter
(4) large whole wheat bread slices
