Its pretty obvious that I am a newb here, and a newb to lifting also. I have been doing a lot of reading but I still have some questions concerning my diet, I have been labeled an ectomorph (I believe thats what its called, very high metabolism, hard to gain weight). So I am currently bulking, the thing is that I am starting my new routine also.

:help:This might be a really dumb question but should I go through bulking before I start lifting or is it ok to bulk while I lift?

I would like to make it up to around 190lbs. I am currently at 170lbs my overall is below.

5'11"
170lbs GOAL: 190
Looking to gain mass and strength
BMI: unknown

I just started a high calorie diet today, plenty of high calorie meals, I get about 3500 calories a day.

Thanks for any help you can provide

What's your diet like? what exactly are you eating?

Your BMI is 23.7, which puts you in the normal range. But BMI is bull**** for bodybuilders, and you want to be at least in the overweight, if not obese, range.

And you always want to lift while you bulk, otherwise most of the weight you gain will be fat.

Bulking+lifting =gaining lbm+some fat
Bulking w/o lifting = getting fat

If your not lifting than your not bulking your just eating to much food. BULKING is a bodybuilding term.

The #1 thing for ecto's is counting cals. You might *think* you are eating alot but consistency is key. The only way to be consistent is to count cals.

Use this www.fitday.com if you are not allready.

bulk and lift.

What's your diet like? what exactly are you eating?

I searched through the forums looking for different shakes and diets

My daily diet:

Breakfast- 1 cup egg beaters, whole wheat bagel with cream cheese, potato, fruit.

snack 1- high calorie shake, protien bar. ( 2 scoops vanilla ice cream, 2tbl spoons PB, 2 cups whole milk, 1 bannana).

Lunch- usually a meat, rice, fruit, vegetable,

---workout---

post workout shake with protien bar (2 scoops whey, 2 cups whole milk, bannana).

dinner- turkey burger on onion bagel, greens, noodles.

High calorie shake (2 scoops vanilla ice cream, 2tbl spoons PB, 2 cups whole milk, bannana).

---BED---

Any suggestions on a diet change or a better shake for post workout or high calorie? :withstupi

I eat the protein bar with the shake becuase the shake isn;t what I think of as healthy, so I eat the bar to give me some protein. Should I not be doing this?

I noticed you put something about the shake being healthy and not eating the protein bar with it, why is that?

are are taking whey?

if you're taking a protein shake right. why eat a protein bar it's just like eating a candy bar, i think once and awhile they're ok but twicea day might as well eat a candy bar instead

right now I am taking the protein shake after my workout, the shake that I am taking the bar with doesn't have any whey in it, its just got the ingredients that I listed next to it. I take the high calorie shakes to put on weight right now.

But you think that I should just take the whey shake after my workout and not eat the bar earlier in the day?

are you progressing with this split?

Just started it this week, I worked out my first term of college in the fall, then I couldn't continue through the winter, I want to start again this term, so far the diet change and everything is going well.
