So what's the secret to keeping bananas fresh?

Everytime I buy them they end up going bad in like a day.:bang:

Am I supposed to put them in the fridge or keep them tightly sealed in a bag?

My mom keeps them on a fruit stand near a *little bit* of sunlight- not enough to roast them at all hah.

She also usually buys them a little under ripe- so they ripen within a few days.

Now that you mention it I did recall seeing those fruit stands where you hang fruit from, are they supposed to not touch anything?

Actually ours doesn't hang. It's just a marble stand that we set fruit on. A bowl or plate would do just fine I think.

do NOT put bananas in the fridge...they are tropical. I learned that the hard way. They should be fine on a countertop. I buy them a little green so they last longer. If they go bad, make banana bread!

You hang them so they don't bruise.

Buy some green bananas, some yellow. Don't put them in a bag, they will ripen faster, as they release ethylene gas with fasten the ripening of themselves and their banana friends.

Yeah countertop works fine. I heard that if you cut them up and put them in the freezer it turns into a sort of banana ice cream. Also the browner the banana the more sugar it has as opposed to starch.

Great advice.

OP: I have this problem too:cry: . I usually just try to buy a couple at a time.

Brown freckled bananas are the only type of bananas that need to be eaten!

Bananas are the opposite of stoplights. Green means hold on. Yellow means go. Red means 'Where the hell did you get these bananas?". - quoted loosely from Mitch Hedberg.

Buy a banana rainbow,
No seriously, buy them in like 4 different color shades going from green to ripe. That way they all ripen at different times.

Yeah, I say use a hook to hang them, too. That keeps them from bruising and (in my experience) makes them ripen a little slower (perhaps because the air ciruclation in the room keeps the ethylene gas from pooling around my delicious bananas). Conversely, to ripen them, keep 'em in a brown lunch bag overnight. Should do the trick.

at 120 cals a serve for a nice large banana and chunk of potassium, we should all love our yellow little friend.

Bananas are over $10 for me right now.. I do have about 20lbs of them frozen though.

i wait till they ripen and then i peel them and put them into a bag in the freezer...

it works wonders... keeps them in good shape for a while (enough time before i put it into a blender for my protein shake)
