I picked up some flax, fish, and borage oil caps last night. Every time I see what other people on here are using, I think a little more that maybe I should pick some fish oil caps up. This one seemed better because it also had omega 6 and 9 fatty acids too.

Here's what the label says:

1 cap contains:

400mg fish oil
400mg flax oil
400mg evening primrose, black currant, and borage oil

Omega 3
223mg ALA
120mg EPA
80mg DHA

Omega 6
223mg linoleic acid
61mg GLA

Omega 9
92mg oleic acid

I plan to take 3 a day... one with breakfast, one with either my pre- or post-workout meal, and one with my last meal. How does this sound?

On Built's suggestion I started taking 10 a day. Nothing else changed mid cut, and suddenly i felt like kicked a plateau i had hit.

I take the stuff religiously now. I use ON Brand from 1fast400.com

Cheap and potent.

Wow, 10 pills a day. You might as well get flaxseed oil and take a tablespoon split up throughout the day (3 tsp = 1 Tbsp)

# Ingredients: 100% unrefined, unfiltered, organic flaxseed oil.

One Tablespoon Provides approximately:
# Omega-3 alpha linolenic 7700 mg
# Omega-6 linoleic 2240 mg

Most people don't need to supplement omega-6s and it can be counter productive to do so.

I only take fish oil. Flax oil requires conversion in the body to a useable form. Some bodies suck at it, and I suspect I have one of 'em.

I'll stick to my 10 fish oil caps.

My only issue with fish oil caps is that you have to pay a lot more for the same amount of fat when compared to flax oil. I have also read a study linking flax oil to acceleration of prostate cancer, but who knows, tomorrow a study may come out linking fish oil to something bad.

The conversion of ALA to EPA/DHA is NOT great, and is enzyme dependent.

Stick to fish oil.

Whoa, 100 fish oil caps for $3.25 at bulknutrition.com?!

I'll have to see what bb.com has, as I've always liked their business.

Is that a sufficient amount of fish oil?

Built

Peanuts are a legume not a nut :)

My fish oil is 1200mg and suggests you take 1-3 daily with a meal and to not exceed this dosage. As Built says she takes 10 a day with I presume a similar product to the one i'm taking so why does it suggest a maximum of 3?

The reason why Built and others (including myself) take more pills that what is recommended on the bottle is because you want 1000mg of EPA+DHA per day. Most 1000mg fish oil capsules only have 180mg of EPA and 120mg of DHA in each pill (it says on the back label), so that comes out to taking ~10 pills per day.

The American Heart Association recommends to not exceed 3000mg of EPA+DHA per day, because it has been shown to cause excessive bleeding in some patients.

Cashews? Peanuts?

As someone already said, peanuts are a legume.

As for cashews, they're not like other nuts, some say they have their family of their own. The shells contain toxic substances, therefore you will never find them in shells. They are extremely rare raw, and they are probably most of the time not even close to being fresh, plus they're heat treated, thus a high percentage of their fragile EFA are probably oxidized.

Another con for some people is that they're higher in carbs than other nuts.

To some degree it is also a problem with any food you cook, such as fish, lowering it's omega 3 content. Game meats and any grass-fed cattle meats are good source of omega 3, omega 3 eggs can be a very good source if you can find them cheap. I like eating these eggs raw, I know it is controversial, but the raw unoxidized cholesterol and the EFAs are very beneficial.

The problem with polyinsaturated fats is their fragility, and should ideally be consumed with protective antioxidants. That's why a high flax oil intake can be associated to some cancers... Flax oil sometimes has sit for a very long time on the shelves... The oil does contain some antioxidants, but the flax seed shell protects the fats, and ideally, you ground the seeds yourself.

Saturated fats also have a protective effect on these poly fats.

Corn, canola and soybean oils are pure crap full of polyinsaturated ****.

Davyren, you don't possibly take the NatureMade brand from Costco do you? because for each pill mine breaks down exactly like that.
