ok....so its very important to eat if you're trying to put on muscle mass

but my question is......how do we know what to eat/ how many times to eat it?

Also, can protein drinks substitute for eating? I'm trying to stay slim and I'm worried if I eat alot of steak/fish/etc i am going to be fat

A calorie is a calorie whether it comes from a drink or a whole food.

To gain weight, you need to be in a caloric surplus. Doing this will allow you to gain muscle, but you will inevitably gain some fat along the way. If you're gaining too much fat cut back your calories.

As for knowing how much to eat, www.fitday.com. Set up an account. Find your maintenance calories, then add to that in order to gain weight. Protein, eat 1g/lb of lbm and fat, eat 0.5g/lb of lbm. Fill the rest of your diet however you want.

The links in the above thread should help you with he firs question you have, as for replacing meals with protein "drinks" it's very dependent on what you have in the drink/shake. Personally I would never pass up a meal for a protein shake unless for pure convenience.

Eat every 2-3 hours to keep your body in an anabolic state. Eat enough to meet your daily requirements.. You want to bulk right? If you dont understand the meaning of bulking you should look it up. You will gain fat, but it will help build that muscle you want.
What to eat? Do a search on this site, you will find tons of threads about eating.
