Hi. I was wondering if protein shakes ever have an advantage over food as a post-workout meal. Recently I've been eating just lots of solid, high protein foods after my workouts (chicken, fish, etc). However, do shakes get digested and absorbed into the body quicker than solid food, and thus be a better choice as an immediate post-workout meal (along some food of course)?

They do get absorbed quicker. But I suggest you search this topic, you will find a tonne of info. Plus, Getfit is on her way to shut down this thread right now lol.

Immediately after your workout, have a protein shake in water and also take in simple carbs dextrose and maltodextrin. Then 2 hours later, have a meal w/ at least 30 grams protein and complex carbs such as sweet potatos, brown rice, wheat bread, wheat pasta, etc...

Thanks for the replies, somehow it never occurred to me that shakes could be better than food at times.

No need to wait the two hours. You want it right away, eat the solid meal right away.

Yep I wouldn't be able to let myself wait that long anyway.

One of my favourite post workout meals is chicken noodle soup.

Lots of water, lots of salt, virtually fat-free (I do homemade), chicken, pasta.

Perfect.

When having pasta do you also include another carb source?
