View Full Version : What color should your pee be??

I know it may be a dumb/weird question, but I was just wondering that. At football camp this summer a couple of guys said the more yellow it was the better, cuz the yellowness was caused by fat leaving your body, or something like that. Other people said that the clearer it was the better, and that ideally it should be as clear as water, cuz that means you are well hydrated. Does anyone really know what color it should be?

yes the clearer your pee is the more water it contains which means the more well hydrated you are. Clearer = better.

LOL Avat....
Wooster--your pigskin buds are completely WRONG! The darker the color=more concentrated urine means you are not drinking enough. It should be clear or close to clear if you are taking in enough water.

okay.....all of you are just wrong.
your pee should be straw-colored (light yellow).
fat does not leave your body through pee. well it kinda does...but not in the way you are thinking.
if your pee is clear...youa re over hydrated. this taxes your excretory system.
if you pee is dark yellow...your dehydrated. drink more.
if your pee is flourescent yellow it's from the multivitamin your just took.
and that's all i gotta say about pee.

So I'm drinking too much water? (I'm always thirsty)
What about now that I'm taking B Vits. My pee is always lemon lime colored, how can I tell if I'm drinking too much water now.
Tryska

After your first piss in the morning, you want your piss to be clear or just a BIT of yellow. If not your body will release anti-duiretic hormone (ADH), it will do this in its attempt to keep you hydrated and keep your circulatory volume at proper levels. You are over 60% water, so drink up! And dont believe anyone who says that you will retain water if you drink to much. The opposite is true:D
Now if you find that you are excessively thirsty for a long period of time, this can be a sign of diabetes. However, if you dont have juvenille onset, and are not overweight, not to worry

BTW here's where the yellow color comes from (not the vitamin kind of yellow). Hemoglobin from your blood cells is converted into bilirubin. There's a complex breakdown pathway but the end result is bilinogen and urobilinogen. These products are waste products that are filtered out of the blood by your kidneys. I can't remember which one does it, but one of them causes the yellow color in your urine. If your urine is dark yellow that's either because you have more bilirubin than normal (jaundice) or your urine is concentrated because you don't have enough liquid intake and your kidneys are concentrating the urine.
Cool trivia: The first step in the pathway where hemoglobin is broken down into bilirubin is the only known chemical reaction in the body where carbon monoxide is produced. See, I stayed awake for at least one lecture in med school. :D

I figured it should be clear, but I thought I should consult the experts. By the way, I can't drink water during school, except for at lunch. Is it OK to just drink water in the morning and at night?? I've been drinking about a gallon a day, which is more than I've ever done before. I'm drinking more and more every day, but it's mostly at night. Which causes my piss to be super clear at night when I'm drinking it.

it's NOT supposed to be clear. dammit. is no one reading this?
anyhoo..can't you take a water bottle with you to class?
wooster82
01-25-2002, 08:21 PM
Sorry Tryska. I understand and believe you about how it should be straw colored. Sorry about the mistake. But, no, we can't take water bottles into class. I've tried it. Am I still getting the benefits if I only drink in the morning and evening?

Isn't it illegal to not allow students to drink water in class? Just say you have diabetes or something. Can't you at least go for a drink out in the hallway at a drinking fountain?

that;s what i'm thinking. I rememberonce when i was like 7 or 8, my mom decided to use the blue stuff in our toilet...and didn't tell me...so i get up in the middle of the nigth to pee....and it's bright green. scared the hell out of me. I run into her bedroom to tell her something's very wrong cuz my pee is green and she busted out laughing at me.
