We'll since weightlifting is pretty much my primary hobby now that schools out I decided to start a journal....finally.

Ill give you some background info. I started lifting approx. 1 year ago and pretty much I was only upper body until around september, then I started doing squats , then eventually everything else. My goal is overall fitness. Stength, endurance, flexibility, etc.

My current maxs:

Bench: 225(plateau'd at this forever!!)
Squat: 335 6/6/06
Dead: 375

Today Im starting a new chest rountine to see if I can get outa my bench plateau.

So this to me seemed like a pretty weak workout, last time I did chins I got 2x12 but 2x10 this time was very challenging, Iv been doing 10-12 reps with my bodyweight with pullups/chins for about half a year, major plateau there...
The rows, I have never done underhand grip on bb rows, seemed harder to me. Usually I can pump out 150 3x5 with overhand grip pretty easy, maybe this was just hard because I had just hit the bi's on the chins, or because I have never done this movement before. Who knows? Anyway, the T bar rows on the machine I had never done eather, didnt have a partner with me to do them with a bb, So another new workout there also. Also I felt like curls were not needed, I have been neglecting them lately and my arms keep growing so w/e.

Tried To go on to flat db press but after those inclines I felt like I was done. I was aiming for 3x5. The first set was very hard so I lowered 5 pounds and did the 70's but at my 5th rep I thought it wasnt enough so I squeezed 2 more out. The last set barely got 4 reps, dunno what happend. I havent really had a real big meal today, so Im going to go ahead and say this is why I was worn out and didnt do another chest excersize. I have noticed that my chest does look bigger and more full from doing more inclines than flat. I have been doing inclines for about 3 weeks to see if I can get out of my flat bb bench plateau. .. any advice or critizism is welcome!

On another note, I havent been eating much at all in the past 3 days, I have no clue what it is. I feel like I have dry mouth all day and literally have to force food down and It even makes me gag to eat a lot, I dont feel sick at all, I feel completely normal . But my appetite is way down.. I wish I knew what this **** is.

Another thing thats ticking me off is the YMCA in general. Nobody at ALL does lowerbody, virtually everyone in there does curls and bench only. And not only that but on bench they only go down about 4 inches. The music there is absolutly horrible too. I cant get mad or focus with britney spears or some gay little boy band crying in the background. Does anyone else experience this at the YMCA?? Im serious thinking about cancelling my membership and finding another gym.

nice workouts so far.. congrats on starting up a journal.. hah, look at it this way, you won't have to wait for the squat rack if people are doing mainly upper body.. unless they're using it to do hardcore curls:mad: good luck on getting out of the rut with the bench pressing. Changing things up sure can help a lot.

lol yeah the squat rack is ALWAYS open. thanks on the inclines, I honestly think these are working my chest better than flats, we shall see soon:smoke:

didnt have too much time because I had to get to work so I just decided to do 2 excersizes.

OK so I havent done heavy deads in over 2 months and my strength today was WAY down. Last time I did deads I got 315x6 and this time 300x3 was very hard. Also my grip was bad, the reason why i didnt get 275x5 on the 4th set is because i couldnt hold on.. man.. anyway moving on.

I really liked yesterdays workout. The Atg squats felt AWSOME(first time every doing them) I think im going to do them from now on. So, so far im diggin the 5x5, hope results show!

yeah the 125 was hard. My delts were still sorta sore from bench on monday, since I havent flat benched in about a month the delts were sore. Maybe this is why the lift was down

Ok got 2 more reps out of the 300 pounds then last session. Weight on deads still down though, pr is 315x5... Maybe i was a little weaker from the squats. anyway decent workout!

Also used 500 mg of arginine pre-workout. Dunno if it helped any..

Thanks man. Really I havent been squatting seriously for all that long. Started in September in my weight training class but didnt really try or take that seriously. I got out of that and started a good routine in like January. So a little over half a year I have made amazing progress. squat max in jan was like 225, so I have gained a lot of strength on squat in a very short time. Keep it up man.

I guess wednesdays of 5x5 are supposed to be the lighter days maybe? not sure only supposed to do 4 sets on squats deads and milis, with the deads and milis going to top set of 5.

McIrish-Yeah atgs are totally awsome, started doing them last week for the first time and I swear I can already see a difference, esp. in the teardrop. I want to be able to max 335 on atg by end of summer which is currently my reg. squat max. Yeah...hah

All my lifts seem to be going up 5 pounds a week and squats 10 pounds more than last week. Im psyched

Damn, Nate, sick squats as per usual. I can't manage the ATG because something tweaks in the outside of my left knee whenever I go all the way down (even without weight), so I'm just going to parallel for now.

Yeah I sorta have the same thing going on. When I get to my heaviest set or 2 my knees crack sometimes at the bottom, probably not good lol.

Dude, Nate, I tried doing some front squats today and I'm so hooked. They're about at 50% of the weight you're pulling, but I'll add more when I get comfortable with it... thanks for the tip, I love them way better than regular... I feel like I can go way lower.

fronts are great, havent done them in months but once you get the weight strait and your form and stuff they own your quads.

Most weight I had on my dumbbells at home. Havent curled in probably 2 months or something. the 40's seemed mad easy, looks like my curls have gone up even without doin them


Ok I was supposed to do 165 for 5 on the BB Rows but 155 was easy as hell and my form was way off so I adjusted and was able to do alot more weight. So I just went for 185.

So yeah today(night) was GREAT. I have been eating more food and protein then ever and I know thats whats been giving me these killer gains.


ALSO!!! I took 4grams Arginine with VAULT(hell yes) pre workout and went NUTS.:eek: I actually thinnk this helped me out with this workout, esp with the squats.

yea congratz on the double PR. Were you sore afterward, its like a curse with me, whenever i hit one I get sore the next day.

Three PRs in one day? Holy plateau shattering, Batman! :) Keep it up, Taqueezy. Ace work on the squats, btw - hey, which way are you holding your arms on front squats? I used to try the "arms crossed" approach but currently I just hold my elbows out, as if I had cleaned the weight up. Seems a little hard on the wrists, however.

McIrish-well I havent done front squats in awhile but when i did do them I did them in clean position and let only some of my fingers hold on to the bar instead of all them so it wouldnt kill my wrists. I cant do across grip, it hurts my sholders.

So the workout was O K... I was pretty disappointed with the military pressing again. I have yet to be able to get more than 3 reps out at 135 in over a month. All other lifts progressing except this one... hummm. Deads were pretty easy, back at my old repping with them. The close grip lat pulls felt awsome, really hope these can help widen my back some.I absolutly hate doing squats and deads on the same day!! IT HURTS ME BACK

dude im also in a pickle with my millies. Im stuck at the same point as you pretty much now.

did get 154 x 1 a while back, but now its gone totally stagnnent and even 132 feels like a ton! I have no idea whats going in, but all i can say is do what im doing. Just lighten the load a little and bang out the reps. Could be ur doing mil pressing too often? I dont know. I think thats why my mil presses suddenly dropped.

Im currently doing mili's once every 7 days. Im sorta thinking this isnt enough and its my only sholder work in this routine. But there isnt really a better place to put these at, this routine is pretty strict and im trying not to change it up at all. 125x5 feels like cake, then 135 im like shaking everywhere and its mad hard to balance, i dont get it.

Damn, everyone's at a Military press plateau, it seems. Oh well, in spite of the mili's the deads are looking really solid in here. That's 2xbw for reps, not baaaaad. :) You're like an ant or something now.

thanks man, yeah all lifts going up pretty nicely except militarys... maybe its because i only do them once a week.. or maybe because im still fatigued from benching on mondays. Benching always gets my anterior delts on fire.

I would squat before you deadlift, but that is just my opinion. I feel that the chance of injury is increased when your back is already fatigued and the weight is on your back. I too am at a military press plateau.....115x3 :(

yep, just following the routine. I tried deads after squats once and it seemed even harder than squats after deads so i just do deads and take a 10 min break then go to squats. But yeah those two esp on the same day SUCK

Your lower back might have a few kinks that need to be worked out, take it easy man.That is pretty much what happend with my left bicep and after a days rest it was better. Good rows.

Liftingkid- I have no idea whats going on with my lower back! I woke up saturday and it was so sore... I havent done deads or squats since wednesday. And This morning when I woke up it was EVEN WORSE. Im going to a chiropractor soon so see what the **** is wrong with my back.

Goodwinm- Pretty close to 90 degrees. Ill try to get a pic or vid soon.

holy SH!T 270x5 was probably the hardest 5 reps I have ever done on squats.


Supposed to workout today and do deads, milis, squats, but tuesdays workout was pretty taxing, I think I need a day of rest, so ill just skip the mid week workout and be ready for heavy triples on friday!

yeah i dont know what my bodyfat is now... maybe 10-12? in wrestling season they said i was 6% and i weighed 145. I dont know how low i could get now but im definatly not cutting

5ft 10 and 190- 200lbs is a very beasty position to be in. And if you keep to about 12-14% BF you'd look a beast too ;)

Your lower back could have been tired from rows and the fatigue was added to during bench. Maybe that explains the squats?

Thankyou everyone, yeah the row are going great, but i really like them AFTER Rows.

last week 205x5 on bench was pretty hard, probably could have got another rep also. But 210x3 was alot harder, doubt I could have got 4 reps outa that. Maybe progress on bench is slowing down some.

The squats I cant explain. can get 270x5 but not 275x3. Oh well I wont dwell on this. Ill just eat my ass of and go for 275x3 next friday!

Thankyou everyone, its great to have some extra motivation here from you guys. I think it helps alot. So yeah this program is giving me insane results. I want to be able to bench 250, squat 375, and dead 405 by the time school starts. School starts aug 25th. A little over 3 weeks, those goals seem reachable?

Using a max calculator, my maxes as of now should be approx..

Bench:240
Atf Squat:330
Dead: 375(last max)

and I want to be here in 3 weeks

Bench:250
Squat:375
Dead:405

Humm.. I think the bench is possible, not sure about deads. How much of a difference in weight are Atf squats compared to regular squats? If I can atf squat 270x5 what should I be able to regular squat for 5 reps? 300 maybe?


Edit: BB rows im probably still getting noob gains on because I have only been doing them a couple of weeks. So yeah. HAR HAR

My triceps are already pretty strong, I can close grip bench more than I can incline. Whenever I bench and get to the point where triceps are dominant at the top part of the lift, the weight flys up. So I doubt its a tricep issue.

Yeah im really happy about all that but squats is another thing. I have missed 2 squat sessions because my spine and lower back just hurt to much to bear weight. 185 kills my back! So I dont know whats going on with that. X rays of lower back next week. I think I seriously have a problem with my spine, if so, no squatting:( . If that IS the case which it shouldnt be then I can still do front squats, hacks, and leg press, so ill be able to stay in the game:thumbup:

rows its sorta tough, i really dont feel much pain in my lower back on rows until my last set, after that its sorta OW but nothing like doing squats. It just feels like its compressing my spine and it hurts like ****.

I would give it maybe one or two more hard, intense workouts to make sure this is your plateau. Then I would figure it out from there whether or not you want to switch up your routine. You might also want to look into some other exercises that will assist your squatting and / or other stuff that you get stuck on.

Yeah Dgabe im going to do about 2 more weeks of this. The bb rows and deads keep going up but the milis, bench, squat seem to be at a standstill. I am thinking of taking up BGB after this. I miss doing the other excersizes, Bill Starrs 5x5 only has 5...

BGB routine start

So i havent lifted in over 11 days, and after todays workout, i definatly regret it.

Bench 5x5

135x5
155x5
185x5
205x4
195x4..

Incline bb bench

135x8
135x7..


After this I was finished and ill tell you why.

First off, the 205x4 was rediculously hard, just the other day i did 215x5... Then I lowered it to 195 and when i was unracking the weight i felt something really werid in my left elbow and it didnt feel good. I started doing the reps and at rep 2 I started seeing stars and couldnt do anymore after rep 4.

I decided to go on and do incline. 135x8 first set was cake. Then second set after rep 7 I felt this HORRIBLE pain in the back of my head down to my neck and I could not move the bar AT ALL and my stepdad had to pull the weight up. I still feel some pain in my head now 10 mins later, I have no CLUE what that was but it hurt so bad so I decided to just stop for the day.

So yeah very VERY displeased and pissed at the moment with bench, iv always felt i lacked alot on this lift and right when i hit my 215x5 pr I was reawlly happy then after that my strength just plummits. **** workout...:bang:

BGB has done alot for me, its working alot better then I ever imagined and has me progressing like I could have only dreamed.

Be it I've tailored the program alittle more to my needs, for the large part I do it as its written.

Decent strength man, you gotta love those people curling in the squat rack.

I remember the week before prom all the guys would take their girls to the gym. The guys would lift and the girls would sit around takeing up equipment... specifically this one time a chick was sitting on a bench and I wanted to bench so I asked her to move. I put on 225 ( I was close gripping ) and I heard her smart ass boyfriend say "He's not even going to get this". I **** on his soul when I close gripped it for 6 easy reps lol. Morale of the story is that those people suck ass, just wait them out.

so yeah let me give you guys a review on the sumos.... The have murdered my hams! I dont think my hams have ever been this sore from deads, maybe even more sore than doing SLDL. Are sumos good enough to just replace conventional deadlift in all? Also, the underhand grip rows felt better than overhand.

Diet is getting better. about a week before school started my appetite just went away. I ate probably twice a day not even big meals. I tried to shuve food down but i just couldnt. Now that school has started for some reason im eating a whole lot more. This is good news maybe i can get my bench back where it used to be:cry:

Hockey-thanks dude. Yeah the 120x5 must have been a bad day, i had done some hard chins and pulldowns before that too so maybe i was fatigued.

Goodwin-Ha no way. This was just random pressing PR. No warmup just went up to the weight and started going.

Con- yeah the class is called "weight training and conditioning". The guy who runs the class sort of knows what hes talking about but not so much. All the kids in the class are like freshmen and sophmores and know nothing about lifting. Its kind lame though, i have to do some sort of lifting every time i have that class(every other day) or else i get a 0 for participation.

The 225 I caught it but then felt something in my elbow and i dropped it right after i caught it. so a miss there.

The bench.. wow back at another god **** plateau. Went from 215x5 to 205x4 in a matter of 10 days. I dont know whats goin on with this and its pissing me off. Been eating my butt of also. The class im taking at school i have about 30-40 mins to lift so i cant even do my routine. lifting sucks now

yeah I can do what I want but he makes us do like 2 bicep and 2 tricep excersizes on some days and you HAVE to do them to get a 100 for the day so i have like no choice. He doesnt really watch you strictly so sometimes i just lie and wrote that I did em.

I don't understand exactly what this means- maybe you can explain it by writing out the routine you are thinking of. I have never liked the idea of dropping accesory lifts, though. I've tried it and I think it was one of the stupidest things I've done. I'm not saying it can't work for you, it might, but I think it can create a lot of imbalances. Also, I have to say this: All rep ranges make you stronger. Higher reps are just as important as low reps.

I feel ya for real nate. Got two gym teachers, ones a fatass who wants us to do these gay sports, **** load of cardio, seems to know little to nothing about proper nutrition and is just ******ed.

Other gym teacher is a cardio fag; "I go running every morning", "Its bad you cant do more cardio".

Basically they are gay and seem to have a distorted view of good health, ohwell just try and get through it man. GL

I think my size is big enough, all the kids at my school say im huge and people say i look like im on roids and stuff so yeah its sorta annoying, i want bigger lifts to back up my size because im as strong as pretty much the strongest kids at school but i have more mass. I just want to switch to a strength routine that focuses on Bench, deads, squats, cleans, military press, bb rows, the big stuff. And i was wondering if doing double wave loading would be a good routine?

Not sure if your signature is old but at 160lbs at 5'10'' you must have a weak school, no offense. I'm 174-175 at 5'11'' and I doubt I'm MAYBE in the top 15 strongest kids. I would suggest a nice clean bulk to 180, you'll love the size and everything else. Also to get their as well as building your PL lifts like you want to do, you could try out the Bill Star 5x5 like I am doing. Works with compound lifts 3 days a week, squatting 3x a week...doesn't get much better.

Nice job on the squats 275x5 is tough especially after a tough bench workout. Do you think you could be overtaxing your CNS a bit by doing that many sets in a day? Maybe you should drop the inclines and see whats up. Good luck!

i mean im def not the BIGGEST kid by far but ammount of LBM i might be up there top 15 or so.


wave loading im not sure but it goes like this. lets say my best is like 180 5x5 or something around that on bench. ill use double wave.

185x5 190x4 195x3

190x5 195x4 200x3

if i complete that one week the next week ill add 5 pounds to the whole mix and go for 205x3. sounds like a pretty good idea.

Im doing bill starr again though, the reason i think i started to see the gains slow down was because my diet DID start to get worse around when the gains stopped so im not gona totally give up on this routine. I have it a little switched around. theres a thread i posted in the BB forums.

I was researching westside for myself, but thought against it. Im still new to the game and got a lot to learn still. One thing I did come across tho after searching is to adapt your program. Like the link you posted is just a sample, you can tweak it to suit you; like most routines, theres more than one way to do it.

Yeah I dont know about the powercleans. My form definatly isnt that good, I feel that its hard to dip down when the weights being flung up. But I do thing they are fun. I my lowerbody felt GGGREAT the next day!

good luck w/ the chins. Do they monitor and see if your pullups are from a full hang. If they dont and you can do 15 full hang ones you should have no trouble cheating out 20.

I dunno about adding the chins in there in three weeks... ask Sensei, if I remember correctly, in one of his threads he wrote how he got up to 20+ full-hang chins. Something about not doing them to failure and not doing them with added weight.

Now, that being said, be careful! Those tricky marines don't wanna give t-shirts out, so even if you GET 20, they might call foul on the last two because of bad form or something dumb like that... shoot for 22-23 then ;)

Whenever I have seen people do pullups in these type of things they are very rarely full hang. So if you do like 7/8th of a pullup it will look good enough and you will be able to bang out 20
