...because sometimes in life you just have to concede defeat and start over.

As many of you know I've had a pretty significant setback recently. I herniated the C5-C6 disk in my neck. The herniated disk was pressing on my spinal cord and I was losing strength and control in the left side of my body, especially my left arm. It was exquisitely painful as well.

I was diagnosed in the beginning of February and almost immediately went for surgical correction before the nerve damage was permanent. The disk was removed, a cadaver bone was inserted in its place, and the whole thing was screwed together with a plate. Between the time leading up to diagnosis and recuperation time post-surgery, I've been out of the gym sitting on my ass for a good 6 to 7 months now (depending on if you count the month of crappy workouts I had in December while trying to ignore the injury).

I've finally, after months of physical restriction, been given the all clear to resume working out.

I am weak. Very very weak. This journal will be the record of my path back to where I was before, and hopefully a bit further.

I've attached part of one set of MRI's that shows the squished spinal cord. I've also attached 3 x-rays post surgery. They were taken yesterday. In the MRI, my spinal cord is the upper horizontal white band that is pinched in the middle...

To give you an idea of what's happened, I've gone from benching 315 for 6 to 8 reps all the way down to a ball-busting all-out brute-force set of 135x9. It goes downhill from there. I am still a little concerned about putting the bar on my back for squats. so, basically, I'm at square one.

here's hoping "muscle memory" is for real.

You're going to come through this one, and it's gonna suck feeling weak as hell for a while, but you'll get through it.

Nice to see you on the board again, Case.

Don't fret. It'll come back. One thing you have to remember is that your nerve bundles were severly compressed. You could have been a paraplegic man...luckily things were caught in time. Your body is still working on getting a full impulse from your brain to your muscles and that will come in time. It'll be a while before you restablish that neuromuscular jconection.

It's not so much that you're weak, it's that your muscles have to learn how to do things again. Don't kid yourself, bro. This was a severe injury and it's incredible that you're doing as well as you are. Take it steady and don't be too anxious or disapointed because your bench dropped 200 lbs. I doubt anybody else would be doing as well as you are.

And for those of you wondering...despite the lay off he's still as big as a house.

Well, today was my first back day of 2006. It was incredibly short. My experience has been that it takes NOTHING to get me so sore that I'm debilitated. I'm not taking my notepad yet, as I'm still kind of just messing around, getting my body used to actually doing more than just sitting there.

I did 4 sets of Seated Lever Rows, 4 sets of Lever Pulldowns, 2 sets of Bent Over Dumbell Raises (damn... I think thats what they're called...:( ), and for fun I did a set of seated dumbell military press thingies...

ok... so I've forgotten what things are called, lol. I'll work on that. The weights were light, and the workout was short, but I fully expect to be very sore tomorrow.

Its a first step, and I'm thankful and glad I was able to take it today.

__________________________________________________________

Sylvia: Thanks for the good luck! I definitely plan to be in Columbus next year. ;) See you there!

Marianne: Glad to be back, I hope your back is healing nicely. I definitely know how bad it can get. Back problems are the worst - so much of everyday activity depends on your back.

Rennypooito: I am not as big as a house. Maybe an economy import mini-van, but definitely not a house. Don't worry bro, I'm taking it nice and easy to start. But once I'm sure I'm not going to break again and once my mind is used to bossing my appendages around again, watch out! You've got a 6 month head start on me... I intend to take it back. :evillaugh

MM: I'm in for the long haul man, if there's something this layoff has taught me, its how important all of this is to my well-being. God I missed the gym, lol. Thanks.

Stash: I hear and obey. I'm not eating that nasty-ass spam though. blech!

Pup: Thanks for the welcome back man. I appreciate it.

Sidior: I weighed in at 234 today. A big surprise actually. I'm not tight like I used to be, but I haven't totally wasted away, either... luckily. Thats the thing though because I still look like I'm pretty big, and then go in and lift these weenie weights... Did some leg presses today (4pps, 15 reps, 4 sets). Every single other leg machine was taken. Every one. I tried to get in the squat rack, but it looks like I need to do some flexibility stuff because I couldn;t even hold the empty bar on my back without feeling like I was auditioning for the cirque d' soleil. So I got on some weird ass cardio thing... ugh. cardio. its got 2 treadmills, one for each foot and they go up and down with your stride. About 90 seconds later my heart rate is over 160, and I'm going 3mph...

Bench Press
135x20 / 185x10 / 225x2
This is like triple the numbers I was able to do last week! YAY!!!

Incline Bench Press lever machine
90 per side x9 / 90 per side x6 / 70 per sidex9

Incline Barbell Bench Press
135x12 / 185x3

Incline Dumbell Flies
30x12 / 45x4

Tricep Pushdowns
60x21 / 70x11 / 80x5

Dumbell Lateral Raises
20x15 / 30x8

Dips
BWx6
left wrist was hurting

I went a wee bit overboard. The 1st set of bench presses was SO much better than last weeks, I totally got psyched up. I hated to leave tonight. :D

Wow, so many of you have posted good wishes. Thanks everyone, it means a lot to me and I really appreciate it. What a great welcome back!

Beast - I'm not sure how I herniated the disk. It was in my lower neck section, right where a squat bar would sit, and at the time I started noticing symptooms, I was squatting 465 on good days... I'll be laying off the squats. The nature of the repair is such that it makes even more stress on neighboring joints now. I'd be even more likely to damage another disk if I were to try doing it again, so the squats will be a long time coming, if ever, I'm afraid.

Especially the "lifting the bottom of his shirt to wipe his face, exposing stomach" part. I love that, when guys do this surreptitiously to show off their abs. So HOT!

Teufelhund

Back / Shoulder
Cable Pulldowns 100x15 / 130x10 / 150x7
Hammer Strength Row 3ppsx6 / 2p+25x10 / same x10 / same x7
Bent Over Dumbell Row 60x12 / 70x10 / 70x10
Seated Dumbell Press 50x12 / 60x10 / 70x6
Dumbell Lateral Raise 20x12 / 25x8 / 30x6

Mostly Chest Day
Bench Press 135x20 / 185x10 / 185x8 / 185x6
Inline Bench 135x9 / 185x4 / 135x9 failed. oops. no spotter
Incline DB Fly 30x10 / 50x5 / 45x9
Seated Barbell Press 115x6 / 115x6 / 115x8 / 135x5
Upright Barbell Row 55x12 / 95x10 / 115x7

Legs (232 lbs)
SQUATS!!!!! 135x20 / 185x12 / 235x10 / 235x7
SLDL 135x12 / 185x6
Cybex Leg Extension "8"x10 / "10"x10 / "12"x6
Cybex Seated Leg Curl "10"x12 / "12"x8
Why can't cybex just put bogus weights on their machines like everyone else. I lifted a #8 for 10 reps has no meaning. it was heavy though. They could have at least called it a "24"

More Chest! (235lbs)
Bench Press 135x20 / 185x12 / 225x6 / 225x7 / 245x3
w00t! No spotter so I started stopping early on the sets 225 and above :D
Decline Press(no incline open) 185x14 / 225x5 / 225x5
Shoulder Press 135x10 / 155x5 / 135x4
Dumbell Lateral Raise 25x15 / 35x8
Cybex Rear Delt 30x8 / 50x10 / 30x7

Well, it appears that the numbers are coming up very quickly. I am pleased. I was thrilled to be able to do squats, although I definitely now have form issues, since I need to keep the weight lower on the shoulders than I was previously used to. I go all the way down and all the way up, but I'm finding myself leaning too far forward to counterbalance the lower position on my back. I'm also thrilled to be able to bench 2 plates again. Much less traumatic than straining and shaking with 135 on the bar. The Barbell shoulder press is going to be difficult, I can tell. But the Dumbell lateral Raises seem to be coming up quickly too.

I am pleased.

I recognize the horrible imbalance of the routine. I'm just making sure I give the parts that need it plenty of rest before hitting them again. I do not want to get injured again.

Oh yeah. I took not completely unpleasing webcam pics last night. The lighting sucks, there is no detail, and they are slightly out of focus and grainy. In fact, if it weren't for my enormous nipples, you prolly wouldn't even be able to tell it was me. Don't think I'll post them, but they're there now in case of future before/after needs.

I am fat, my back is completely flat, what little lats I had are now completely gone. The bicep/tricep imbalance is more pronounced. My butt is a mere shadow of its former self. I have lots of work and even more eating to do before I'm back to where I left off.

Stash: LOL! I would sacrifice my dog, my mom, and any 6 strangers for arms the size of a side of beef. They damn well better come with matching legs though. My arms are, unfortunately, still the size of... I dunno. A well fattened squirrel or maybe even a bunny. You're right though... the delts are melon sized... ;)

Rennie: Thanks man, you helped me out so much during the recovery. I'm being careful. The squats felt better than a lot of the delt stuff, as far as my neck goes. I will definitely try the front squats, and I will definitely be very careful with the squat weights. I'll try to keep a lower weight, higher rep kind of thing going on squats, until my bones are fully healed. The added stress should help that process, as long as I don't go crazy on it. Dumbell lunges... I can't be the new guy looking like a drunken moron trying to stay standing for dumbell lunges... Thats going to have to wait until they know me better at that gym, lol. Then I can look like a moron. :p

Sylvia: Thanks!:D

Bruteman - I'm trying man. but honestly, you should see the guys that go into this new gym I'm at... I'm almost puny, and I'm definitely fat in comparison. Its very very motivating. :)

And damn gmail for going down every 90 seconds. That sucks.

No gym last night. My one year old managed to slice his hand open on a broken window pane. He'd broken the window the day before, after his 2 year-old brother shoved his head into it. I guess my wife never covered the glass. Joshy was bleeding all over. His clothes were covered in blood, the window was covered, the floor in front of the window was covered, the floor by the sink was covered, my wife's clothes were covered, the dishes in the sink had congealed blood pooled in them... It was like ****ing DOOM in there. She was able to wrap him up and get him to the pediatrician though, where they cleaned the wound and chose not to suture. "The skin color wasn't right," they said. My wife is taking him to get x-rays this morning to make sure there is no glass in the wound, and that his pinky is not broken. I don't know why they would think his pinky is broken, but... anyway. He needs x-rays. I of course, am now living almost 40 miles away on the other side of Houston. Thats 30-something miles of rush-hour traffic. Totally unable to help her when she called crying asking what she needed to do. This arrangement might need to be rethought.

Cable Pulldown
100x15 / 130x11 / 150x6

Pullups
zero. I could not even get my body to budge. nothing.

Hammer Strength Lateral Wide Pulldown
1p+25 x 14 / 2p x 9 / 2p x 8

Hammer Strength Iso Lateral Row
2p x 10 / 2p x 8 / 2p + 25 x 5

Bent Over Dumbell Row
60x12 / 75x10

Cambered Bar Curls
50x12 / 60x5

My grip went to hell about halfway through the workout. Maybe it couldn't handle the shame from the pullup attempt fiasco, lol. The air conditioning is definitely broken. Jeff: I'm 235. And the way my shirts fit say there is definitely a difference. I don't know where the weight moved to, but it didn't stay in my muscles, lol.

Not a single pull up? :( How did the lat pull down feel? Also, if the AC is broked in a Houston gym I can imagine that it takes a toll on your abilities.

Will your current gym just move to the 24HR fitness or will you have to get a whole new membership? Will the 24HR fitness be a real gym or a pansy feel good place?

0 pullups. not even a half pullup. not even a damn hanging shrug. nothing.

The lat pulldowns were fine I guess. 150 on a cable is light weight, compared to trying to raise 235 lbs off the ground.

It was hotter than hell and everyone was complaining, but I was the only one with sweat pouring down his face.

The gym is located right next to "The Galleria," the big trendy upscale shopping district for rich snobs. Its been there forever, but over time, its becoming surrounded by high-end condos of the people who want to live in a business park / shopping district. Shake
Meal with chicken and (rice or wheatbread or greek roasted potato stuff)
Shake
Shake
Either another meal (Beef/Pork/Chicken) or a Shake (about a 30:70 split lately)
Shake

where shake is my weightgainer/protein powder diabetic coma inducing concoction. If I remember right thats like... 900 cals, I think. with an assload of protein (whey) and some random crap in the weightgainer (creatine, glutamine, other aminos I think, etc).

oh. and #2 is only #2 if I'm at work. otherwise its prolly another shake.

So... after some mathematical review, believe it or not, thats not really a bulking diet up there.

Your diet is like freaking precontest...no wonder you aren't packing on size. When you are eating a ton of protein, remember the Thermic Effect of Feeding (protein elicits about a 20% thermic effect), this will drop your net calories for the day. Its not really hurting you, but if you plan to roll that way with the diet, jack up the carbs PWO and with breakfast to add some more quality LBM.

Well the drugs seem to be working. Ear stopped hurting and sore throat is almost gone.

Thursday morning while pulling into the parking garage at work I got pulled over. The ladycop had run my license plates, and saw that the registered owner of the truck (thats me) had warrants out. I got a ticket last November for going 10mph over the speed limit. I'd moved so the insurance company did not send updated insrance cards. The court date was scheduled for right after my back surgery. I missed it. So each item was a seperate warrant. Thats 3 outstanding warrants.

Anyway.

So I'm outside my company building, directly in front of the parking garage entrance, being patted down and put in handcuffs while my coworkers are driving in to work. For a good half hour I stood there cuffed while they chit-chatted with each other. Oh yeah - the lady cop that pulled me over called in 2 more cops. So its me and 3 cop cars and 4 cops. Blinking in front of the parking garage where all my coworkers were coming in gawking. I guess they thought my sadistic murderous 10mph over-the-speed-limit "wrap sheet" was worthy of extra manpower. The lady squeezes me into the back of the un-airconditioned cop car (I had no idea they were so small inside) and hauled me off to god knows where. I had no idea where I was for hours. None at all. I'd ask and people would say Makawa, as if that meant something. The phones son't call out either. The only thing they call is landlines. No one I know except me has a land line. They won't even let you look at your cell to get any other numbers. Luckily I was able to call my roommate and arrange for him to come get the truck before it was towed, before they handcuffed me. The would not let me pull the truck into the parking garage, 20 yards away. Nor would they let me put change in the meter of the parking spot I had pulled into when they pulled me over.

So I'm in "intake" and getting frisked for like the 5th time. It is at this point that I notice a peculiar smell. "Is that urine?" I think. I looked around and there's nothing but gray painted concrete everywhere. They take me to the most ignorant medic ever to discuss any health problems I might have. I told him about my back surgery. He asked where it was "C5-6" I say. Then he goes off on how thats not back surgery, thats neck surgery. whatever. I could barely understand what he was saying anyway. He was a fat black guy with some kind of island accent. Like Jaimacan or something. I look in the med storage room behind him and damned if there's not 5 boxes labelled "cialis." WTF kind of prison is this? He asks if I'd like something to eat and I (stupidly) say yes. He brings a leaking 8oz milk carton of warm koolaid, and a peice of what appeared to be rotting gray meat between two slices of white bread. I immediately tossed it out.

So finally they finish checking me in to the bighouse. They lead me into this big glass walled room full of gross looking people. Dirty drugged out toothless people. There were two benches, completely occupied. the other 100 or so guys are sprawled out on the disgusting floor that is literally sticky with dried urine. The place reeked of it. The smell and the inability to get away from the dirtyness was terrible. I have no idea what time it is. No one does. They are guessing based on which daytime television show is flipping around in circles on the TV with the broken vertical-hold knob. I was left alone for the most part, thank god.
The day dragged on. After a while I got my time in front of a judge. They take you to the door of a room, where about 80 feet away a judge is sitting at a desk. You are not allowed to enter the courtroom. You stand at the door. He read the charge, and asked if I wanted to plee guilty or not guilty. He said if I pled guilty I could get out as soon as I paid $400. "Guilty!" I said quickly. And that was that. All in all it took about 30 seconds. I was led back to the glass box though. And left there. "Well crap," I'm thinking... How am I supposed to pay if I'm stuck in here? I was thinking they'd take me to a cashier or a working phone to get the money from a freind or wahtever. nope. I went back to holding. With pay phones that only call collect to phones which accept collect calls. No cell phones. The only number I knew was my own. So I began calling over and over my house. I had no idea what my friends were doing to get me out of there. Eventually I gave up and laid down on the filthy sticky stinking floor like everyone else and had a good long thought about my life and the choices I've made. Here I was, unable to help myself out of this situation, or even to prevent it from happening. I'd known about the warrants, I just didn't have extra cash floating around to cover it. I'm lucky it was me and not my family that had an emergency. If something had happened to them and I'd been sitting there with empty pockets unable to help, I could never forgive myself. The day shift prison guards left. Eventually I got a hold of my roommate. They'd been working on hiring some attorney because they thought my court date was at 8pm. No... I'd already gone to court 6 hours before that. And even so, if you want to use a lawyer that means a minimum 24hr stay, until the next day so you can get another 30 seconds in front of a judge. Well, not in front of really since you can't even enter the courtroom. I impressed upon him the need to "GET ME THE HELL OUT OF HERE, NOW!" At this point I hear that I have to pay $600 to get out. "Just do it" I tell him. I'll sell whatever it takes. Hell. I'll whore myself out. I just had to be at my new job the next day. I couldn't let this jeopardize my new job. (I'd called my new boss earlier and told him I couldn't come to work as I was being arrested and taken to jail. I guess he didn't see me standing outside the building handcuffed.) My roommate said he'd handle it. He didn't have the money but would get it. this was at 6pm. So I sit there in the filth thinking about how I got here, and listening to the conversations of the others. Most seemed to have been there many many times before. They were comparing which jails had the best food. Apparently, jails in a neighboring county serve Church's Fried Chicken. An eternity later, I'm wondering what happened to my friend. The evening news is on and I'm starting to wonder when they stop letting people out for the night. They had started calling groups of guys who's time was up to release them. The evening shift prison guards left and graveyard came, the evening news ends, the late night shows end. We're put in the cells with cots for the night. Its 2am and we can now sleep. Until they wake us at 4am to get ready for breakfast at 5. seriously.

Finally they call the last group of prisoners for the night, while we're getting in the cots. I was not on the list. I got in my cot and I started crying. In a room full of filthy piss covered drunks drugees and criminals, Only half spoke english, and only a tiny fraction of that half spoke it in a way that I could understand without consulting an urban slang dictionary. This was it. I was going to lose my job, lose my ability to support myself and more importantly my family. I was going to lose everything. For driving 10miles above the speed limit, and making the choice to spend my money on other things than taking care of myself. I didn't have much time to really get down though. Maybe 10 minutes later they came back and called my name. FINALLY. You've never seen someone debunk faster than I did. I got my mattress, stored it away, returned the moth-eaten blanket and ran for the door.

It was at this point that they decided to take my mug shot. jerks. I've had 1 sandwhich all day long, and 2 8oz milkcartons of koolaid. (Because they were pissing all over the waterfountain/urinal combination thing)

I get out, and my roommate tells me he had to pay $960 to get me out. Plus $40 because the cops called the towtruck guy even though they said they would wait for him to come get my truck. the towtruck had not done anything yet. But since it showed up thge cop made him pay the guy 40 to not tow it away.

The total bill is like $1010.62 or something like that. I will be broke for 6 months trying to cover this debt to my amazing friend, who worked from the time I called him in the early morning till 2am to get me the hell out of there. I'm ashamed to say that most of it is going to have to come from shortchanging my wife on her house payment. At least for now.

So I go to sleep for 2 hours and then go to work the next day. The boss kind of laughed at me. I told her that it was disgusting and I was SOOOO happy I was already taking anti-biotics for the strep throat. For some reason she thought that was hilarious. eh. go figure.

Anyway. Until last night, I haven't worked out since my last post. Over 10 days I think. :swear: I did chest last night, and I was happy it went well. I'll post numbers later, I left my book at home. I can say I benched 275 for the 1st time since coming back to the gym, so I am very happy about that.

Thanks guys for the compliments on the pictures.

Back Day

Pullups
BWx6 / x3 / x2
Still sucks but sooooo much better than my last attempt. Doing them at the beginning of the workout probably had a lot to do with it, but... I'm gonna go ahead and pretendits because I'm getting into shape or something.

Close Grip Cable Rows
180x10 / 220x7 / 200x6

Wide grip Cable pulldowns
150x10 / 130x7 / 130x7

Seated Shrug machine thingy
2ppsx9 / 2ppsx12 / 3ppsx6
This one made the top of my back burn like fire. not a muscle burn. It was a side effect of the surgery. It literally felt like someone was pointing a hairdryer at my back at full heat and just letting it sizzle. The sensation stopped after the first set. weird.

Upright Rows
0x0
At this point I realized I couldn't find my new cell phone. After a frantic search of the gym, I went to look in the truck and parking lot. It was in my truck, plugged into the charger. lol. oops. I decided I'd probably done enough and should go home to my protein shake.

TwiloMike

OK. My legs were almost unsore from the severe beating I gave em last week. I decided not to let them go to long without a reinforcing beatdown.

Warmup
recumbant bike, 10 miutes, 90rpm, middle resistance

Squats
135x15 / 225x10 / 275x7 / 315x4
I didn't realize the bar was bent. On the way up on the lqast rep of 315, the bar rotated up my neck. CRACK! CRACK! CRACK! I stopped my set. I'm hoping that wasn't the sound of my C5-C6 fusion snapping apart. :( I guess I'll know if I'm a paraplegic in the morning.

Leg press
3ppsx20 / 5ppsx12 / 6ppsx7

SLDL
135x10 / 185x6
These made my the middle area of left trap burn like crazy. its probably the spot I just cracked with the squat bar. I'm going to buy myself a sissy pad before the next leg day.

Leg Curls (seated)
10x12 / 14x6 / 14x8

I didn't write down last week's leg day, so I don't really know if I did better than then or not. I do know it was a HELL of a lot easier. Found a new supplement store on this side of town, so no more driving 40 miles for whey. YAY!

135x20 / 225x12 / 275x4 / 245x6
Nice benching day. Was thrilled with 225x12. And 275x4 was twice what I got last time, after doing less beforehand.

Incline Bench
185x9 / 225x5 / 225x5

Cable Fly
70x12 / 80x4 / 70x4

Low Incline Dumbell Fly
40x4 - ow. I think my pec-arm tie-in has had enough. time to move on.

Dips
BW x15/ x9 / x7

Triceps Pushdowns

135x15 / 225x15 / 275x10 / 315x10 <- Hot Damn! rested up after the 275 set and whooped 315's ass. I think the bigger weights are going to be ok as long as I'm not taking only 90 seconds between sets. I'm not there cardiovascularly yet.

Stiff Legged Deadlifts
135x15 / 185x10 / 225x10
lightish weights, but a great improvement and the pain in my traps was greatly reduced compared to last week

Cybex Leg Extensions
10x10 / 12x10 / 14x10

Cybex Seated Leg Curls
10x10 / 13x12 / 16x6

I took it slow today. Will pick things up as my body allows. I enjoyed today's workout. Took my time. It was nice.

I thought you mentioned in your thread in mod forums about the surgery that you..

A. werent going to be able to squat again

B. thought squatting was a big reason you F'd your spine

if not--what was the determined cause of the injury?

Teufelhund
08-14-2006, 10:50 PM
I probably shouldn't be squatting and it probably was the reason the disk in my neck got crushed.

The cause was never identified.

Teufelhund
08-15-2006, 07:57 AM
I have been told I have an abnormally small spinal canal. This does not leave much room for intrusion of disk material into the canal without compression of the spinal cord.

So yeah, the squats will never be heavy again. I probably should plan to stop at 315, which I've already been doing, lol.

So much for big legs.

---

So.. I think god is angry at me or something, lol - I have a peritonsilar abscess. I've been sick as hell all week. Like, "Oh God I'm dying" sick. I finally ended up at the ear/nose/throat doc today who shoved a GIANT needle into my tonsil and sucked out a few cc's of puss. He was disappointed with the amount, so I get to go back tomorrow to get it done again. ugh. I sound like I've got a softball in the back of my throat when I try to talk, which also hurts.

His office looked like something out of a Norman Rockwell painting. And that needle was big enough to suck quarters through.

So now here I am, I've lost 12 lbs this week. Cuz I can barely breathe the swelling is so bad, much less drink or eat, and I've had a fever with chills since Monday.

On the plus side, the pain pills they gave me rock. So now I can feel all floaty while I wonder if my new job is looking for my replacement yet or not, lol.

I asked the doctor that myself...

"Its the kind you don't want to have."

ectx
08-25-2006, 12:37 PM
That's a stupid answer. You don't want to have any kind of strep.

Beta hemolysis refers to the organism's ability to lyse red blood cells. When Strep is cultured it is placed on blood agar plates. Beta hemolysis (clear areas on red plates) around the colonies is usually a sure fire sign that you have group A strep. They'll usually do a gram stain and possibly check a few other things, but usually, beta hemolysis is a sure fire sign. There is such a thing as alpha hemolysis. This is partial hemolysis. Below is a picture destinguishing between the two:

http://biology.clc.uc.edu/fankhauser/Labs/Microbiology/Strep_Detection/hemolysis_P8040099lbd.JPG

Note the clear versus partial hemolysis. This activity is caused by an enzyme in the bacterium that causes it to lyse your red blood cells. This enzyme is called hemolysin. It's bad, but not all that bad. The biggest threat strep poses is the presence of M protein. M protein looks like your cardiac muscle. The organism basically covers itself in fibrinogen from your body so it renders itself invisible to your immune system except for that big old protein sticking up above and beyond that looks like your heart. This is common to pretty much all strep. Sounds to me like you had a bad case of strep pyogenes. You'll live. Strep pyogenes gets your throat very swollen and gives you crazy fevers (hence pyogenes...pyogenic...fever causing). Pen. should clear it right up. Chances are the peritonsilar abcess kept both your body and any drugs you were taking from getting to it. I'm sure after busting the pocket open and more antibiotics you're much better now. You will feel like crap for a few more days, but you'll survive. Next time you get your teeth cleaned or whatever make sure you take antibiotics prior to getting any work done. Something tells me your antibody titre is high and you probably will be living with rheumatic fever for the rest of your life. Nothing major...just need to take antibiotics right away if you suspect strep and also take them if you go to the dentist so that you won't develop sepsis and/or endocarditis.

That sounds very scary.

It's not bad at all, unless you let it go unchecked. Like most bacterial infections it's easily treatable and preventable.

This seems pretty serious to me...

I've been taking antibiotics since the day the sore throat really kicked in... So maybe since it was abscessed my body had no access to the infection to develop the antibodies?

Yes, it can be very serious. The thing to keep in mind is that if you ever have another strep infection you should be okay by taking antibiotics right away. Yes, the abscess probably blocked off your immune system from the infection so that may have saved you (although the severe fevers and muscle aches, etc indicate a strong TNF-alpha response from your immune system). Now for the good news...rheumatic fever is pounded into most med students, dental students, and yes, even grad student's heads...but for the most part only a small percentage (about 10) of all untreated cases of strep develop into rheumatic fever...before antibiotics you'd see a lot more rheumatic fever, but now the infection is usually kept in check before it can cause a problem, and if it isn't, upon reinfection it usually is. So relax, but take precautions. You've been battling this infection for a while and if your body has developed enough antibodies to protein M at the first sign of a sore throat get it checked and take some antibiotics. Considering you have 2 kids, you gotta take care of yourself as much for them as for you.

Glad to hear you`re ok, buddy. Although you must have on hell of a stash of antibiotics to be able to pop them with the first signs come along. Our system sucks. :(

So when are you headed back to the gym?

Thanks for the support guys. I don't think I've ever been sick like that. I'd go out on the patio in 100 degree sun in longsleeves shivering during the day, then get in bed at night and start sweating like crazy while freezing to death. I couldn't eat or drink either. My throat was so swollen that when I tried to swallow it would go up my nose and not down my throat. And it hurt so much just to try to swallow that spewing chicken noodles out my nose didn't bug me at all. I lost a lot of weight. I was really really miserable.

Next week I guess I'll be back at the gym. I visit the kids tonight - first time in weeks because of work bullsht and illness. Tomorrow I need to prepare for a trip that will last until Sunday afternoon. I really just want to sleep. I hope its a nice relaxed trip.

this sucks.

So I heard that Casey stopped working out because he is too big to fit the Nutcracker costume supplied by the NYC Ballet. I hear Casey is now "toning". Anyone hear anything similar?

I am still working out... barely. I benched today. Life has been fast and furious lately.
