but then again, do you trust the government to know what's best for you?

The requirement to avoid deficiency, or the requirement for optimal health? Both are very difficult to analyse anyway.
It can also vary a lot, depending on your activity levels, stress, genetics, calories, etc.

You can find the RDA's, just register on fitday, and they're somewhere in there.

If you follow a diet of real food, it is pretty easy to exceed many times the RDA's. This is certainly more optimal.
