Anyone see this? Last week, ON TELEVISION, was the "2006 World RPS Championships." That is RPS as in, you guessed it, Rock Paper Scissors.

Jesus! People will make a competition out of anything! What makes it worse is that people get paid to win this. And, on top of that, there are companies who bought ad time when this whole friggin' thing was televised!

More commentary in my blog: Love and Hope and Sex and Dreams (httphttp://thoughtsbybg.blogspot.com/).

this "sport" has been around for a while now. One of my buddies designed their website, last time he was trying to get tickets or entry for four of us. There is actually some strategy to the game, there is atleast one book i know that has them and is in print.

That's worse than the championship dominoes tournament ESPN2 has been playing after world cup soccer the past 2 weeks.

Luck is not a strategy.

no less than poker.

There's a bit more involved with poker than rock, paper, scissors.

there are odds in poker, there are also odds in RPS
There are tells in poker, there are also tells in RPS.

there are more simalarities between the two than one thinks.

Very (very) simply:

cards: 1 in 52
rps: 1 in 3

At least this show was on Bravo (or A&E) and not ESPN like the spelling bee...

There is definite and significant strategy in poker. RPS doesn't have a whole lot. To some extent you can guess what the other players are going for, but that's about it.

HOLY **** DUDE I AM THE KING OF "FLIP A COIN!"

Seriously though, there's not going to be anything truly random coming from humans- in all likelihood everyone will have tendencies to go with certain patterns, or to always play X after Y occurs, or to open with scissors (or whatever) 60% of the time. Because we're not really random, if you're familiar with your opponents and dissect their games, it's still a game of playing the odds, but you can tip them in your favor.

I won 4 straight rolls in dice the other day, won 10 bucks! Does this make me a skilled strategist?

There are dozens of variations of rock, paper, scissors and YES! there is a way to win consistently... I'd tell you, but then it would be spread all over cyberdom and then I'd lose my edge...

there is actually a proper way to roll, the tenchnique takes a hell of a long time to get down. With proper technique one can roll with very good odds. There have been a couple of guys that have been banned from Casinos in Nevada for doing just that.

There's some strategy.

Meatheads usually go rock.*
Most other guys go scissors.
Tricky guys go paper.

So then you pick which one off that.

That's worse than the championship dominoes tournament ESPN2 has been playing after world cup soccer the past 2 weeks.Dear god! I caught that too. First the Nat'l Spelling Bee, and now dominoes. These aren't even freakin' sports!

they didnt roll the same numbers over and over again. They picked numbers they wanted to roll, than rolled. So unless they have like a crap load of dice i can't see how they could do it. Doesnt casino uasually gets new dices half way into games or anything of that sort? kinda like black jack and a new deck of cards.
