this may be a novice question, but why is deli meat shunned for a weight lifter?

Normally processed heavily, loaded with fillers, and unwanted stuff. Then again, depends on the brand. Your better off just buying the meat and making it yourself. Cook a turkey breast or ham and just cut it up. Cheaper and better.

A sandwich with deli meat maybe frowned upon, but if you eat a pound of it in one sitting, im pretty sure all the body builders here would give you kudos.

Deli meat is fine.
Just try to stick with the highest quality. The cheaper it is, the higher the sodium and water content.

Boar's Head makes good quality deli meats
