We have a citizenship class in Ontario. It's called "Civics", and it's a half-credit course with the other half-credit coming from "Careers". Both classes -- at least as they were offered to me -- were complete and utter bull****.

I've had citizenship classes in middle school (junior high, whatever). It's just a class about different levels and branches of government.

What should disturb you most is what I wrote to the examiner about.

Exam Question I chose: "What are your dreams and ambitions"

First Sentence. "I am already living my ambition. I am a serial killer"

lol....

No offence goodwinm, but when i took my English G.C.S.E's they were rock solid. I got a decent grade but had to 'bust my balls' to get it, yet here you are with mass spelling and grammar errors and you got those grades??!

Huge debate in the news here at the moment about whether GCSE's are getting easier, i'd have to say this works in favour of that... sorry mate, but it really does.

and pointing those mistakes out is being an ass.

I have no problem with people who make continuous spelling and grammar errors on the forums. It makes it easier to separate those who have put thought and effort into their posts and those who simply don't care.
I have also found it a fairly good basis to judge intelligence.

how can you say that? Everyone makse mistakes. I make lots of spelling mistakes in posts and my sig and things. I dont correct them mosto f the time because;
1) I dont realise, and
2) I know that any person reading will understand.

So you'd spellcheck someone's post before actually reading what it is about. and then judge that they are talking absolute crap by there gramatical and punctual errors?

If that isnt what you were saying then I apoligise, but if it is then you are just a very steroetypical person.

i.e. People with bad spelling and grammer on a forum = lack of intelligence.

Ill say again. Its a relaxed forum. Not a classroom.

Firstly, it's a sign of lazyness and lack of intelligence.

Secondly, my pointing out of your mistakes was to prove what a shambles the G.C.S.E English exam has become if you reached such grades.

1) If you don't realise, it's because you are either too lazy or can't spell and therefore see nothing wrong with what you have written.

2) I'm sure the people here are in fact intelligent enough to understand your posts but that doesn't excuse poor spelling and lack of thought/effort put into it.

Regardless, my original point was that when myself and friends (in the highest 'sets' in school) found the G.C.S.E exams fairly tough, and we put our life into them. You basically made out it took little effort, whilst showing you had bad spelling and grammar - therefore as good as proving that (as the British media are saying) G.C.S.E's have been made easier over the years.

I never said they were easy. I did work damn hard to get those grades. And who knows. maybe they are getting easier. But the fact of the matter is, I worked my butt off especially in Maths to get that C grade. You try taking a past gcse excam paper from last year or the year before at intermediate or higher tear. They are not easy by any means.

I did, i took plenty of test papers. I also took my G.C.S.E exams a good few years ago. So those papers you refer to are even after my time so imagine how hard mine were.

They were, which is why when i hear people (in general) today saying the questions have been 'dumbed' down, or were 'easy', especially with the media/examiners pushing the same message across – ‘hacks’ me off slightly.

Regardless, my original point was that when (eliminate) myself and friends (in the highest 'sets' in school) found the G.C.S.E exams fairly tough, and we put our life into them. You basically made out it (awkward, try, "insisted that it") took little effort, whilst showing you had bad spelling and grammar - therefore as good as proving that (as the British media are saying) G.C.S.E's have been made easier over the years.Edited for spelling and clarity.

Now that is being an *******. Seriously. Grammar isn't the main focus of my point, it was the spelling. The examples you pointed out are ridiculous and not mistakes, purely suggestions as to words you would have used.

We aren't writing letter's to the government here, therefore the examples you pointed out are pathetic and irrelevant. My point was basic spelling and basic grammar.

What a dick.

TheGimp
08-31-2006, 08:19 AM
Guido, your correction to use "realize" instead of "realise" is not correct. We use the Queen's English here.

J450n
08-31-2006, 08:20 AM
However, being as you have chosen to be a dick about it, i'll run you through it -

lazyness "laziness" - Cant argue with that.

realise "realize" - NO! That is the correct English spelling. Look it up. Both spelling's are in fact correct.

when (eliminate) - Again, no, i'm referring to something that happened in the past, the when is there to represent that. It does NOT need to be eliminated.

made out it (awkward, try, "insisted that it") - That is really pathetic. I don't want to sound like an Oxford English Dictionary when i post, hence the use of 'slack' terms and phrases, as seem's common place on this mainly American based website.

Don't be petty, you know what the point was, don't alter it to suit. If you want me to speak like a dictionary/pompous English gentleman, i will, it's easy enough done.

Wow, this thread has gone way off topic!

Goodwinn, congrats on your results, I thought you were older than GCSE age though, from your previous posts!

I remember writing some weird essay about paranoid schizophrenia in my GCSE english paper! Weird, but it seems examiners like that sort of thing!

As for this spelling thing; my spelling is pretty good, but I always make mistakes when i type, simply because I try and type too fast, and muddle the letters.

What are you doing next Goodwinn, A levels? Or off to the real world? I vote stay a student! Im in my 21st year of education!

I always find this one funny... Realise or Realize. As Im English, Im going to stick up for 'ise' !!!

'American English'... pah! It's like having French Russian, or Spanish Chinese!
