View Full Version : How do you warm-up for a PR?

I attempted a PR on squat yesterday and missed. I'm not too dissapointed because there are many factors that may have contributed to that miss. One of them is that I think I lifted too much weight it one go.
My PR is 265. I was trying for 275, although in hindsight I should have gone for 270. Anyways, here were my sets:

5x135, 3x185, 2x225, 1x245, 1x265, missx275

How do you guys warmup for your PR attemps? Should I have gone from 245 to 270, instead of the 265 in the middle?

Hmm... You could try something like this:

135x5, 185x3, 225x1, 235x1, 255x1, 275x1

Drop the intermediate sets down by 10 lbs so you're not lifting quite as close to your max when you attempt a PR. Make sense?

what jordan suggested is what i would do, but i'd warm up with just the bar and just 1pps for a couple more sets.

When I try to max i usually put on a light weight and do that for 12 reps or so and then i put on something I can get for 4 reps till failure and do that 2 times...then I put on the "man weight" and give it a try.

Maybe a warmup with the bar and cut out the 265 (to much wasted energy) other than that it looks good.

I might do: bar x 10, 135 x 3, 185 x 2, 225 x 1, 250 x 1, PR attempt

i pyramid up in weights on a lot of exercises, but if not ill usually do 2 warm up sets, one with 12-15 reps, an another with 5 reps

I'm glad to hear that everyone is kind of thinking the same thing I am. On that note, I'm doing a bench PR attempt tonight at 150 (now you all understand why I'm training for strength ;)). So, my sets are going to look like this:

barx10, 85x5, 115x2, 135x1, PR attempt

Sound good? or should I even do 115x1?

If you are throwing up well over 2 bills, is it necessary even to bother with just the bar? What is the purpose of that?

Just curious.

Get blood flowing into your chest. Nothing to do with weight acclamation at all.

I wouldn't even do the bar.

i do the bar before every bench workout for 20

barx20
95x12-20
135x6
185x6
... etc etc

when maxing, other than warmup i would never do more than 1-2 reps at each weight as one builds up to a single
