Thanks everyone.

Body- Not sure about drug tested, but the highest competition deadlift of all time is 925 lbs!!

You wore socks?

Bah. Anyone can pull that with socks on.

Lift like a MAN next time.

Great lift.

latty - does not look like I will get 920 pound deadlift then?
If i do I will go for the world record and be the fisrt wbb world record holder. though do not hold your breath.

what is the record for deadlift * BW? is it by that small but very strong russian with a long name?

Adam
04-16-2002, 01:12 PM
lamar gant has that record body, he weighed 123lbs and pulled 639.3 for a 5.18xbw dead.
He also did a 683.4@132lbs for a 5.17xbw

Yes, but was he over 5' tall?

Now that you posted the link, I have seen that picture before. Talk about the ideal build for deadlifting, he barely has to bend his back or knees! Reminds me of another great deadlifter, Vince Anello.

Adam
04-16-2002, 07:02 PM
Vince was a beast! 800 at 198 i think
Did ya watch the video of it? its really good quality and a great lift!

Chris Rodgers
04-16-2002, 07:16 PM
I want 800@181!!

Has anyone ever done that?

Deciever
04-16-2002, 07:23 PM
latty, i dont think anyone has ever accomplished that. i know some people have in the 198's but not in the 181's. GO FOR IT! get strong enough, so 800 is easy, and then go up to the platform, and rep it out!

Chris Rodgers
04-16-2002, 07:25 PM
Adam just found for me that the world record of all time in competition is 793@181!!

Something to shoot for. :D

chris mason
04-17-2002, 05:30 PM
Now Latty, is this going to be a natural 800 at 181? I think you should go for the drug tested record!

Chris Rodgers

Yea, I have to read up on some of that stuff and see if I can find drug tested numbers, considering I am natty-Latty.

Latty, you gonna try and take Coan?

You'd better polish up those Chuck Taylors, son!

Chris Rodgers
04-17-2002, 08:36 PM
Haha, Coan is going down, lol!!

I found some deadlifts in the USAPL which is drug tested and the organization my next few meets are in.

American Men's open class:

165- 710.75
181-744

Hmmmm 750@181 and I have many years to go for it. You never know.

I would have to gain 100 lbs on my deadlift for every 10 lbs of bodyweight. I have a ton of muscle mass to gain to get into the 181's, considering I should have more muscle than I do now to compete in the 148's. Only time will tell.

chris mason
05-06-2002, 06:27 PM
Har de har! No. Hey, I was reading an interview with Ed Coan in Monster Muscle magazine. I got it when then sent my new belt. Anyway, he was lamenting the use of excessive lifting aids these days. He mentioned how some federations allow the use of multiple suits, bench shirts that cover the elbows etc. I think that is ridiculous, personally. If you think about it, benching 700 + lbs is almost commonplace these days. Heck, even guys in the 220s are benching well over 700. Are these guys that much stronger than the old timers like Doug Hepburn, or Paul Anderson? I say no. I would like to see what these guys can do raw , without all of the getups they use these days. Ed Coan mentioned in the interview that Kaz benched 661 raw! That, to me, is truly impressive. I really don't think there is anyone today who could touch that, other than Anthony Clark, maybe (although he is immensely impressive doing his pressing with a reverse grip:eek: ). I guess it bothers me because I feel like these guys aren't really lifting the weight, they are lifting a portion of it and the aids are doing the rest. I want to know what a guy can lift without all of that crap, what he can really do, you know? I am not knocking you for using the stuff, as you need to in order to be competitive, but I wish that was not the case.

Chris Rodgers
05-06-2002, 07:31 PM
You have a very good point, but like you said, I want to compete and I want to be competitive.

Coan is the f'n man and supposedly uses very basic equipment(not the fancy shirts and suits out now).

For the record, Glen Chabot hit 665 raw recently and gave 700 a ride as well, but missed. He's a freak. Didn't you see the clip that Belial posted of him hitting 600 for a triple raw??

Reinier
05-07-2002, 03:28 AM

id like to see a pl contest without any special suits or shirts or straps or whatever.

Alex.V
05-09-2002, 06:00 PM
May as well note:

475 x 1

Not a max pull by any means. Decently fast, steady lift. Figure I could have had a few reps (2-3) if my grip hadn't started slipping. Chalk is coming soon.

Also did 605 from 4.5".

I figure my max pull from the floor is a bit over 500, maybe 5 and a quarter or more. (525-530)

chris mason

Actually, I just read that the all-time best bench without a shirt is 711 lbs, performed by James Henderson on 7/13/97. He weighed roughly 390 lbs. Now that is friggin impressive!

I have decided as of late that I want to go for the highest deadlift I can achieve drug free. I have no idea what that will be, but I figure I have the ability to get to 700 lbs without a huge gain in bodyweight. So, that is my long term goal. I suppose it would interest me to know what is the all time best drug free deadlift at 220 lbs, but I know how easy it is to beat a drug test, so I don't know what I would think of it.

i think in top powerlifting theres like 6 spotters or something all decently strong themselves.

those lifts are just f*c*ed up...

Cause your starting pull strength sucks. Just like mine. Latty gave me a few ideas. Try doing rep singles, try standing on top of a box or a plate and do deads that way also.

They are fucked up, but not in the way you mean. Like I have said in other posts, these guys have so much supportive gear on that it is hard to say what they can really lift. By "really lift" I mean what they could lift without all of the suits and special underwear, wraps etc. It is still impressive, but I wonder if the lifters of today are really any stronger than the guys of 20-30+ years ago, or if the lifts have gone up merely due to supportive gear advancements. Think of it this way, Paul Anderson did a 900 lb + squat without knee wraps, or a squat suit and special underwear. He is also credited with a 1200 lb squat, but the depth is in question. Nevertheless, none of the guys today could touch him in a squatting contest unassisted. Food for thought, no? The all-time records are not valid records to me because the conditions under which the lifts were performed have changed so much as to make them incomparable.

Chris Rodgers
05-19-2002, 03:36 PM
Which is why we take that into consideration when looking at records. When it says "raw" there is your answer.

Powerifting is growing and there is no way it would be if it wasn't for the sponsors which are primarly there because of the equipment. People want to see the big numbers. The equipment isn't going anywhere.

I'll LMAO if you decide to compete in the future and start asking questions about squats suits and bench shirts, lol. ;)

chris mason
05-19-2002, 06:54 PM
Ah, you jump to conclusions. If I think that the supportive gear is stupid, that doesn't imply that I am stupid enough to figure I would be competitive without it. At some point, if I want to be truly competitive, obviously I will need to use it. I feel that fact is unfortunate. I feel that the numbers posted today are false. That is all.

As for powerlifting growing, it isn't growing all that well. Big money in a powerlifting show is a few thousand dollars, hardly enough to cover the drugs the guy used to compete. The people who want to see the "big" numbers are the hardcore powerlifting fans, not the average guy or gal that powerlifting should want to attact as a fan. The WSM contests are growing at a faster pace because it is more television friendly, more athletic if you will. If the powers that be in powerlifting were smart, they would try to tie themselves into other more popular sports. They would emphasize the link between the brute strength powerlifting creates and the brute strength needed for football, or other sports. Should athletes train more like bodybuilders or powerlifters? Powerlifters of course, but the average Joe doesn't know that. The sport has way too many federations, not one common vision, and shitty promotion. Who knows, maybe someone will come along and change that.

As to your answer about raw or not, the average Joe has no idea between the difference, thus the misperception I noted.

Chris Rodgers
05-19-2002, 07:57 PM
Well, I don't feel that competitive powerlifting is for the "average joe". Recreational is fine, but if you want to compete, you should have an idea of what's going on. Not knowing what you are getting into is plain ignorance.

Either way, I don't think the sport would attract more fans if it was all done raw with lower weights.

Reinier
05-20-2002, 02:18 AM
Pling is just for the hard core of lifting fans and lifters. people to whom words like squat dead and bench are more than just movements, but each entire sports in themselves.

this will never attract the big public. Strongman gets quite decent ratings when its on at least in holland, but i think people watch more out of a freakshow feeling than because they admire the guys as athletes.

as thoroughly dealt with on this board bb is pretty dead too. i guess the whole lifting scene is kind of out of the spotlight for as far as it ever was in. I personally dont care. it doesn`t make it any less interesting to me and it only makes us more special for beinng into it.

I have to agree with Chris on most of his points.

However, I do think that PLing is growing; slowly, but steadily its becoming more and more known and accepted, with a more diverse group of people taking it up.

Hell, look at how Latty and beercan have changed attitudes in the past year.

Strongman has helped it out a lot since there's a fairly big carryover.

I do wish the equipment factor wasn't the deal it is; its like the inclusion of the pharmalogical cornucopia for top-level BBers (not that the PLers don't use too, but its more "pronounced" in BBing with the wider array of drugs and generally higher dosages used).

For me, I find it even more encouraging that I can look at local and state records and find that my raw lifts are either as good as, better than, or within 20-50 lbs of existing records set with equipment.

beercan
05-21-2002, 05:53 AM
My favorite is juicers who say it's no fair that people use shirts and suits LMAO

chris mason
05-21-2002, 07:35 AM
There is a difference between the 2 Beercan, if a juicer performs a lift unassisted it is still flesh and blood performing the lift, not spandex and denim, or whatever. Again, I would use it in a meet to be competitive, I just don't like it. Let us see what Ed Coan had to say in a recent interview in Monster Muscle Magazine:

"Yeah, I like the USPF. They were just caught between a rock and a hard place. The USPF has very good judges with IPF standards. In the squat you have to break below parallel. I've never seen an IPF squat that has to go 3" below parallel or an of that crap. But they did not have the resources that the USPL had for drug testing, so they were caught in between. They still use jack stands, outlaw the extra equipment, and the Mono-Lift. I think there is going to be a resurgence back to a little bit older style of lifting. I think it is so freakin' ridiculous where people will start saying enough is enough! At one time lifters said that as crazy they would go was a double poly shirt. But now the APF as long as its one piece, it can have big Kevlar patches all over it a be 5 layers thick. Which with that federation is fine. But guys did it before without equipment, Kaz did a 661 bench raw, and there were many other incredible raw lifters back in the day"

Chris Rodgers
05-21-2002, 10:30 AM
Are you under the impression that Coan does his lifts raw?? I realize that he is more old-school, but he stills wears equipment.

chris mason
05-21-2002, 03:50 PM
No I am not, I am not a complete moron (somewhat, but not complete). I realize he uses equipment, but I also realize that he, like me, thinks the excessive use of equipment is getting out of hand. Think about it, you have 220 lb guys benching well over 700 lbs. I would like to see what these guys could do raw. I am willing to bet it would be nowhere near 700 lbs. That is my point. Again, one last time, when I compete, I will most likely wear equipment to be competitive, but I will not like doing so.

Chris Rodgers
05-21-2002, 05:05 PM
Gotcha.

I guess it would be cool if they only allowed single-ply equipment in meets. Instead of the hardcore double stuff some of these guys use. Either way the guys who put up the big numbers are strong, in and out of the equipment.

Anybody do any deadlifts lately? Anybody going for 3.5x or 4x??

Just the other day I met a friend of one of my co-workers. This guy deadlifted 888 at a body weight of 242. This would have beat Ed Coan's record, but the lift was performed at a YMCA. He had an upcoming meet and was going to try 900, but his business went down the shi*ter and he lost a lot of money and went a little loco and quit lifting for a couple years. He's recently been getting back into PL. He was doing partials with 11 plates a side at our gym

chris mason
05-24-2002, 11:53 AM
6 plates on decline is 585, and decline is easier than flat benching. Now, that is still ver respectable, but nowhere near 700 lbs. As to his 625 raw, I would not believe it until I saw it. Maybe he can, maybe he cannot.

Beercan's point is well taken.

damn!

625 raw bench is a very, very large amount of weight

Chris Rodgers
05-24-2002, 12:47 PM
I believe That Halbert can do that. If you look at the video of him throwing around those declines, you would probably agree. That video is old too Like Adam said and I know Halbert' training has gotten smarter and he has gotten a ton stronger.

I realize decline is easier, but I honestly think he could have made his warmup of 405 touch the ceiling if he let go of it. He talks about speed all the time in his articles and I know he has gotten better bar speed nowadays. Just my opinion.

Chris Rodgers

I don't know. It's quite different. It is the only way I can set it with my rack that has the plates that low though.

That and he's basically copied the existing plates and moved them out to give the illusion of a heavier bar.

There's no more than 315 on the deadlift and 225 + some change on the squat, jugding by the reflections off the plates.

The seams from the copies to the surroundings are just horrible; the squat pic tipped me off, but you can see it in the deadlift as well.

pulled 315 for 3 (sumo style)

Can you guys check out this thread? Do any of them know what they're talking about? There is a vid on that page too you should watch. They are deadlifting, but it looks like a SLDL with a rounded back. They are claimng this to be proper form for max lifts. I don't really understand b/c it goes against everything I've read on how to deadlift, including the links they reference in this thread. Can you guys please give me some feedback on this:

The only thing photoshopped was the plates... not the socks the "giraffe neck", the belt beeing around the torso...

I wore socks becuase i could get lower, and it wasnt even a sanctioned contest so alot of people did it.

Giraffe neck... go pull your max deadlift and try and look normal

I wear the belt high, because it gives me more support that way. If i wear it lower, it restricts my range of motion and in squats, i cant get low enough then.

and what else did you notice about the picture??

MarshallPenn
05-30-2002, 12:52 PM
max weight.

Deciever
05-30-2002, 12:57 PM
just do whatever feels natural to you... when moving max weight in a deadlift. everyones form is different. You may have to get down further while people like spatterson and epithemus can stiff leg it. I know i deadlift like you do kinda, i get down lower to the bar then they do. I'v e only been dealdifting conv. for a month, so im not the expert, but it sounds like what ever is more comfortable to you, you sho uld do. Dont put your body in an awkward position as it is more likely to become succeptible to injury.

MarshallPenn
05-30-2002, 01:06 PM
ok - Can't argue with that. But, they are saying they do deads "correctly" and that other s don't.

Also, they ARE stiff-legging it., which is more of a hamstring/glute thing, so why did they start by saying it's a back excercise and SLDL's are a leg excercise when they are stiff-legging them!??

Deciever
05-30-2002, 01:12 PM
just do whats comfortable. that is what is comfortable to them. I say do them your way cause your comfortable that way and i guess it feels natural to you. Give it time, you'll get up there. Dont worry about what others are doing, do what you feel is right.

Deceiver - I've only Deadlifted once. So I don't know what's comfortable. All I know is 225 came off the floor with some major ease, and that was definitely not a SLDL I did.

I'd like to Deadlift 405 within a year, but I really don't want to train the lift that often, so I'd like to make sure that I'm doing it right. You're saying proper technique is what feels natural? That is often not the case in many skills.

Deciever
05-30-2002, 01:44 PM
im saying in most deadlift cases. Look at spattersons.. hers is practically a stiff leg.. but to her, that is great form, to others it may be hideous. Just find what you can pull the most with without getting hurt

Deciever
05-30-2002, 01:47 PM

This thread is blowin up!!

Doc- My conventionl used to be stronger...than my sumo surpassed it by far...then my conventional came back and passed sumo...and now they are pretty much even. Before you decide which one is stronger make sure you give each style a fair chance.

Also, often times my max deadlifts resemble a somewhat stiff-legged deadlift. I do get slightly lower than they do in that video, but not much. You have to find where you get your power from and feel most comfortable.

The way I set it up, when I have a plate on each side they are on the ground, but I can lift it with 2 fingers. As I come up the tension decreases to the point where the last 3" or so the bands totally give out and I lockout the entire weight.

Cool. So there's like a 100 pound differential between pull and lockout? I'd definitely be interested in reverse-band deads, but if you pull with a wide sumo stance, where can you set up? Not in the power cage, I suppose.

I think a teenage girl who weighed 109 at the meet pulled 250 or so. Another girl who weighed 132 deadifted like 320 or so. Strong girls.

yeah that one girl in the 132's did pull a 320... she was very impressive, so was the girl who pulled 250 at 114 or something. Im always impressed by girls who can lift.

the weights are

well monstar - the weights are 20kg weights

so 20 kg in pound is 44 pounds.

however they might be 45 pounds as you don't get 20.4 kg weights, they round them to the nearest number.

if they have done this then my max dead would be

573 pounds and not 560 pounds.

either way. techincally as i am not competing the wieght does not matter as long as i improve my total lifts.

Latty how much tension are you getting outta the doubled greens? i get like 200lbs or so cause i use 225 for a work set on partials from knee. Also where abouts are your partials from

Chris Rodgers
06-26-2002, 04:41 PM
I did those partials with the bar touching the top of my kneecap. The tension is huge!! I had a 90 lb dumbell inside the power rack and a 100 lb dumbell outside on each side. I then doubled the greens around those. Hellish lockout! There was tension at the very start of the lift, but it kicked in real hard a few inches up.

So you pulled 515 without straps at what bodyweight?

Jesus maybe my grip just sucks because I had a really hard time pulling 495 with chalk. Kind of pisses me off actually.:mad:

Bodyweight- *cough*145*cough I am that tiny. :(

It does feel good though that if I can't lift something it is because my back and legs can't handle it and not my grip.

Chris Rodgers
06-29-2002, 02:27 PM
Well, it was part of speed work, I just went closer towards my max because the meet is coming up and I have to see how everything feels with the heavy stuff.

Beercan and I are doing a meet in Upstate NY on July 13th(two weeks). I told Belial he should come up with us, but not sure if he can. It is a bench and deadlift meet, but we are deadlifting only.

Cent I try to go for 6 reps but every week I add 5 lbs and i can still do 8-9.

maybe i should just go ahead and add 10 but i guess im a pussy for it

Reinier
07-06-2002, 03:01 AM
also... im very hesitant to change the way i do things if they are progressing like my deadlift is very well. (ive added 5 lbs a week without loss of reps since like early april)

that is because you havn't found your max yet. hell, if I went down to 140kg on the squat I could add 2,5kg every week and I'd still see "improvments" on my squat for a couple of months, but whats the point with that? Just load the bar, see what your 1RM or 6RM is, and work it from there.

and btw I truly madly deeply admire you Latty  the shiat you DL is just ******* amazing. I almost broke my back DL 400lbs a couple of days ago, but here you are, light as a feather, DL far more. Truly impressing man

how is adding 5 lbs to your 8 or 9rm to FAILURE every week not real progresS?

Alex.V

535 for a single. Should have done a double. Could have done more pounds. Ah well.

Nothing but chalk. Sumo pull, over/under grip.

Reinier

this ****** in my gym pulls 300 kilograms.
thats 661.4 lbs!
and im not even sure thats a single!
I think that was 3xbw too he didn`t look over 100 kilos.
then again he was quite short.

Heath- good job. Time to go for a max. :D

Deadlift meet- Brewster, NY

weight-147 lbs

Warmups-
barx8-10(sumo)
135x2(sumo) x1(conv.)(suit bottoms on)
225x2(sumo) x1(conv.)
315x2(sumo) x1(conv.)
385x1(sumo) x1(conv.)(belt and straps up)

Opener- 425(sumo)- good even though I don't feel I locked it out fully.
Second- 460(conv)- good!! Aceness!! PR!
Third- 470(conv.)- over the knees and died out. I'll have this and more in the next few months.

So that was it. I was the only one again in my weight class and age, so I got first. I did outpull the other person who weighed the same and a few guys who weighed more, so that's cool. The main thing was that I went there to hit a PR an I did. Looks like I'll have to fix my issue of coming forward in the sumo, otherwise I'm sticking to conventional.

There were a good amoun of 600+ deads there as well as 500+ bench attempts. Good stuff.

Beercan hit a PR too. He can tell ya about it if he is still allowed to post here. :D

good work latty.

you keeping with convential deadlifts?

out of curoisty how heavy were the poeple who benched 500+ and deaded 600+ pounds?

Chris Rodgers
07-14-2002, 10:18 AM
Thanks. :D

The guys who attempted those benches were all over 200 lbs except for one, but he looks over 200 lbs.

The 600 lb deadlifts were guys over 200 lbs as well, but I think one was a 198 lber. Some very good deadlifting going on. Much more bombing in the bench press.

Adam
07-14-2002, 10:46 AM
nothing wrong with bombing out in a bench press only:D

Oh just read about your meet now Latty...jeesh that's some huge pulling man. I'm sure with your dedication 500 isn't far off. You could always...dare I say it...BULK!!! :D

At least if you weighed a bit more I wouldn't feel so depressed being shown up by a skinny little biatch! :p And even if/when I catch you or pass you I will still be at least 80 or more lbs heavier so it'll be expected! :swear: ;)

Alex.V

505 x 3.

First two reps were relatively easy, last one was a bit of a struggle, but I may have had another one in me. No belt or anything, just chalk. Sumo, over/under grip.
