I am going to max tomorrow. I have only deadlifted once since June 25th:eek: . That was a light day, and I tweaked my back a bit:eek: . So, being the bright guy I am, I will go for a P.R. tomorrow. Muhahahaha:help:

Don't break something. Try to keep it relatively light... I need to have some chance in hell of catching you. lol.

Good luck. :D

Thanks man. But I think I'm going to back off for a bit... my lower back can't take this pounding. Drop to 5 plates-ish for reps? Whatcha think?

Chris Rodgers
07-25-2002, 06:34 PM
I have made the best progress on my deadlift since I stopped all reps training. Leave your reps for the SLDL and assistance work.

Have you thought of trying speed deads? What do you think is holding you back the most? Speed off the floor? It may help. Just make sure you continue to use something heavy along with it(rack deads, goodmornings, etc.) If you haven't read Tate's article on deads it is a great read.

There it is. Good read for anyone serious about learning to deadlift for strength.

Hey latman, that article is awesome. Thanks for posting it. I was having trouble with deadlifts today and I'm gonna try all of the stuff listed in that article next week. I'm so used to training for 4-6 reps on deadlifts, but it does make alot more sense to just train for singles.

Who knows, maybe someday I'll pull me a 2x bw :)

just blue and green plates today.

i am lazy. i pick up the nearest matching ones.

though my face went red agian.

they are nice weights though. pretty as well.
i dropped a 20 kg one on my foot and it did not hurt, where a metal one, would have left a big mark.

500 for an easy (but slow) double. I'm overtraining deads, time to back off.

MarshallPenn

Form question (I just started DLing recently):

I do a narrow stance (feet about 12 inches apart), psuedo stiff-legged/romanian, Deadlift but with a little more knee bend. My lift uses a LOT of hamstring as my legs tend to try to get rather straight early in the lift.

Could I be doing this better, or is this good technique?

Chris Rodgers
08-01-2002, 03:24 PM
Hard to tell without watching you. I'll say this, those who use conventional style tend to straighten their legs fairly early in the lift unless they are massive and squat the weight up which is more rare. My legs straighten fairly early in the lift.

MarshallPenn
08-02-2002, 10:38 AM
Ok, that's reassuring. Do you think it's better to take a narrow stance, like I'm doing, and grab just outside my feet on the bar, or a slightly wider stance and grab inside my feet? Or, is it just a personal thing?

Thanks for the help Latty.

Chris Rodgers
08-02-2002, 08:10 PM
Better? Some people pull better conventional(Adam), some better sumo(Beercan) and some are about even both ways(Latty). I would suggest thateopleuse both tyles regularly, but if you want to really test your strength use your strongest stance.

BTW, I don't think you are too narrow at all. My conventional has my heels only about 3" apart. My sumo has my toes to the plates(slightly in for safety reasons).

body
08-03-2002, 07:31 AM
i never tried sumo

i may do more or less on them. but would have to practise the technique of them 1st.

my weakest part of my deadlift is at the top of the movement. especially the final lock out of my legs. wether doing sumo would make this is easier for me. I do not know, unless i try them. but happy with my deading at the moment.

Adam
08-03-2002, 09:17 PM
Martial, like latty said try both sumo and conventional for a while and see which one you like/better with.
When i do conventional my feet are about 3-4 inches apart and I pretty much sldl the weight up.

550*1.

then 573 for 3/4. just missed lock out.

in hindsight should have not wasted energy doing 550*1.

plus squated two days earlier so my legs were slighlty soar. so did not do me any favour.

I think i get 573 next time i go heavy on deads in a couple of weeks.

franco recommednd me to do pull throws.

i always have trouble with the top of the movement.

when squating. i tend to lean forward as well, when getting those last couple of reps outs or going for a 1rm.
So i reckon this would be for a similar reason as the top part of the lock out.

is your squat the opposite as well? do you lean forward?

I weigh in at about 215lbs right now, personal best is 540lbs for 5 reps, and a single, no belt or straps, on 600lbs. Still pushing for that 3x bodyweight dead, but every time I think I'm almost there, I go and gain more weight...

Ok, I read the first 4 pages or so but couldnt make it thru all 23. sorry fellas (and Jane!). Figured I'd jump in on this. triple bw is insane (for me) but I love being crazy. Hit 230 today. My goal right now is to make it to a 2 x bw dead. But since I'm trying to drop a little weight at the same time, I'm not sure precisely what that is. Anyway, yea. Count me in. ;)

on a layoff at the moment, may head to the gym today and see if I can yank up a 405lb deadlift Olympic Pull style :)

I weigh 194 lbs so that will be at least Double BW

I did an easy 315lbs a month ago. And let it down slowly - could have down 2-3 reps. So I'm confident I can do a 405. Hell I can pull a 205 up to my chest explosively for multiple sets of 3 :)
205 = 50% of 405 just about :study:

No chalk, no straps or belts either! RAW as can be :p

PowerManDL
09-12-2002, 03:27 PM

heehe I did it twice! The first Time I let the bar down a bit too fast, cause I thought the bar was gonna slip out of my hands, so I did it again just to make sure I wasn't dreaming or under a palcebo effect :p

I got it on tape! All RAW! No straps, gloves, belt or chalk!

Let me edit the size down and upload to my webspace
Its a bit under exposed, I'll have to face the camera away from the Gym's main entrance next time

when I did the 315 it went up so easy with crappy Romanian deadlift form that knew 405 was a piece of cake

405lbs deadlift - my new PR!
I actually ended up doing it powerlifter style, guess the body knows the easiest way to get a load up :)
Well the first attempt look more like a Romanain deadlift!!!My butt went up too fast!

485 next month! Maybe :)
One thing I gotta work on my grip, its was slipping a bit.

Funny thing is I only deadlifted twice in the last month and a bit since my 315 PR. and then they were only 2 sets of Snatch deadlifts on a podium with 190 :)
Goes to show train fast and epxlosive with light weights ie Olympic lifts and Romanian deadlifts and your dead with go up.

Just a few pointers man:

In my opinion, you're rounding your back waaaay too much. Your back should never round like that. Try keeping your back straighter and don't round, ever! Another thing is is that you're not locking out at the top. If you want it to be a 'proper' deadlift, you must lock out at the stop.

But seriously, don't arch that back or else you're gonna hurt something. Other than that, excellent job!

Blitzforce
09-13-2002, 04:53 AM
thanks

My mid back does round, its a bad habit, I guess that's how I sit in my chair :)

But my lower back is still arched, and I don't really feel any stress there as such. But I feel my bum cam up way to fast. I just about did a Romanian deadlift. I normally do a more clean pull style deadlift. Using more quads

I'll work on my form the next time I attempt another PR. Which should be a 455 in a month or two. I really haven't done that many deadlifts. This is the 4th time I've actually done one since I started training propely 4-5 months ago.

Scooby-Doo

Blitzforce
09-14-2002, 03:55 AM
yeah they do look bent, but they felt straight to me.
I dunno - I'm not sure my biceps could curl 405lbs :)

I like BBall shoes, but this one I had on is old, and kinda worn, probably is what cause me to roll on my heels. I do need to buy some good solid weight training shoes, but I ahve yet to find a good olympic lifting type shoe in black :(

I suck.

Weighed in at 145 at the Deadlift Nationals. Legs and hips were a bit sore, so I went conventional. Shiat was in kilos. Looked like this:

opener: 192.5 kilos(424.25 lbs)- 2 whites(other judge must smoke crack) good
second: 207.5 kilos(457.25 lbs)- locked it out after what felt like 45 minutes. Got 3 f'n reds!!!! No good.
Third: 207.5 kilos(457.25 lbs)- got it up to my knees and I was spent. no good

The 207.5 kilos would have broke the National record. It was there for the taking, but you have to be flawless to ss it by a National judge and it wasn't flawless.

So that's it. I got first place and my first National title because nobody else ever seems to lift in my weight class that is between the ages of 20-23. didn't lft my bst and I am dissapointed, bt this is a big learning experience for me just like every other meet. It is good to have your ego stepped on a little. I will help me in the future.

Belial, it would be interesting to see what you would pull in a meet format. Example: opener, second , third. I'm pretty sure you'd hit in the 570's, and this would be a good point of reference in the event you do a meet in december. :)

525, 550, 575? sound good mang?

Alex.V
10-17-2002, 06:24 PM
Interesting thought. :) Though I don't see myself pulling 575 AFTER 550. How long between attempts, usually?

PowerManDL

If you want to be like a meet, it could be quite some time.....LOL

Chris Rodgers
10-17-2002, 08:13 PM
Depends on the size of the flights. Basically, each lifter has 1 minute from the time that the bar is announced loaded to start their lift. Say there is 10 lifters in your flight. 1 minute for each lifter= 10 minutes+time to load the bar between attempts= 15-20 minutes between attempts.

I'd say be prepared for as little as 8-10 minutes between attempts and as much as 30 minutes depending on how the meet is ran and size of flights.

Yeah, I guess I am rather stubborn about not having to use any equipment. Basically I just load up the bar on the floor and pick it up. No wraps, gloves, belt, special shoes or suit, not even chalk. I dunno, I never seem to even consider grip a problem. My left leg feels a bit wobbly though, prolly cuz the hammy injury, today it actually feels quite tender. So just my barehands and the bar Chris, feet are about a foot to a foot and a half apart, so pretty narrow stance as well. I may start trying to pull sumo style for a bit, as I generally don't like to deadlift heavy every time out.

chris mason
11-29-2002, 06:28 PM
Wow, that's really good! You have really improved on these as of late!

About the sumo, remember, sumo isn't better for everyone. Some people can lift much more with a conventional stance, others the opposite, and still others pull very similarly with both styles.

Great job at your meet Scoob!

Oh and thanks for the comments guys, I'm just wondering if sumo style will help hip strength at all, which may lead to my squat getting better. I think hips are the weak link right now.

Oh and not sure how you guys do things, but as I said I pull from the floor. So putting more plates on can be a problem. I usually have it racked low until after 3 plates then I leave it on the floor, but what I do is take 5lb plates and put them on the floor and roll the plates that are on the bar onto the 5lber. This gives enough clearance to slide the 45s on. Just thought I'd share that for anyone who may be struggling to slide plates on, or if you guys have a better way lemme know.

Huh, that's a good idea. I'll try that.

What I do is use a low rack, and put three plates on. Then I'll unrack it and move it to the floor. When I add weight at that point I just do it with combinations of smaller plates (35's, quarters).

Santiago
12-02-2002, 09:36 AM
Sumo will help your squat, and vice versa. You may want to try a coan style squat cycle if you're interested in improving both. Box squatting as also great for hips....

Thanks kids.

lol.

I'm feeling it now, though. I think I picked the right time to back off... my traps are strained near my neck, and my lower back isn't too happy right now. Form is suffering, and I'm paying the price for increasing too fast.

Some great lifts here recently.

12/7

USAPL NY State Bench/Dead Champs

Sumos- 415x1, 440x1, 465xmiss

Weight- 146.

The 440 was smoked, but the 465 only went half way. The 440 was good enough to win me best lifter in the light weight deadlifts. This actually won me a gift certificate for a $55 deadlift suit from Rickey Dale Crain. That was a nice surprise. Not too bad for an off day.

Beercan did very well and we also got to see a handful of 600+ deads and a 700 dead to finish the day.

I too had an off day yesterday....I felt like such crap that I lost my balance on my warmups with 315 and 405....managed to nail my 505 opener, took 525 for a nice ride, and finally took 550 for a shorter ride lol.

It's a good feeling to own 500 lbs, especially when dizzy and when USAPL refs say you do.....

The fact that I've pulled more in the gym shouldn't bother me, because like my dad said, homeruns don't count if they're hit in batting practice. :)

ps, the scale said 185, I think it was probably closer to 190 tho, I'm looking fat lately.
