It's a good feeling to own 500 lbs, especially when dizzy and when USAPL refs say you do.....

The fact that I've pulled more in the gym shouldn't bother me, because like my dad said, homeruns don't count if they're hit in batting practice. :)

ps, the scale said 185, I think it was probably closer to 190 tho, I'm looking fat lately.

I am definitely in on this competition. No doubt. 660, here I come!

Hopefully Ill pull somewhere near double BW tomorrow.

Belial: I started Westside man. So Ill be changing up my ME lift every week. Today I did rack pulls, next week maybe good mornings, the week after maybe SLDLs, etc.

Ill still me doing full ROM deads.

Chris Rodgers
12-19-2002, 03:59 PM
What height were you pulling the bar from? 455 to 635 is a huge difference.

Santiago
12-19-2002, 07:02 PM
Yea, lol, I can almost pull what he can using my weak stance, but wouldn't even have a hope in hell of rack pulling 635...monstar you'll have a hell of a dead if you get fast and strong off the floor...

MonStar
12-19-2002, 07:02 PM
I am pulling the bar from knee level Latty. Conventional as well. The ROM isnt great. Its basically just focusing on the lockout but still, I like rack pulls a lot.

Chris Rodgers
12-19-2002, 07:35 PM
Just be careful. From experience I know that pulling a ton from the knees does not equate to a stronger full ROM pull. I am also choosing a majority of my exercises this time around that are harder than the squat and dead and require lower weights. For too long I was trying shorted ROM movements and stuff I was strong on. You have to work what's weak and then you will become strong. Next time you do a max pull I would do them standing on plates, mats or blocks.

Either way nice pull. I think the most I have ever pulled from there is ~475-495. My strength is off the floor.

MonStar
12-19-2002, 08:06 PM
Yeah thanks for the tips Latty, appreciate it man. Yeah Ill have to spend some more time on deads to see where I am going to need to work. Because at this point I am not sure where my sticking point is, etc. So well see what happens.

Yeah I remember you saying that a higher rack pull doesnt necessarily equate to a higher full ROM dead.

Come to think of it, so is training. People should just have to lift how they're born in order to be fair.

Totally missed this post Santiago, my fault man.

I really agree with what youre saying man. Not trying to be cocky at all. But right off the floor my bar speed is slow. It especially was with 455. I was really dissapointed in my bar speed with 455. I have worked on speed deads and it seems to be better. Pulled 405 pretty quickly I think. Again---my rack deads are conventional, and my regular deads are sumo. I might start doing my rack deads sumo style from knee level, going to have to lower the pins though.

I think I'm gonna take a break from conventionals and start learning to do sumos. It seems some of the guys with similar bodysize or height seem to do better on these. Belial is the same height and pulls much stronger, although he is a stronger, and unfat version of me, but it could translate.

I saw doc pull sumo, so that is the only reference I have so far. I guess it's a matter of comfort on position of the hands and feet? Any other thoughts or tips on making the switch?

Oh, and did 505 conventional last night. No equipment, or chalk, or special shoes. My pants weren't even tight.

As part of the midget clan not sure. I've only done them once and could have used another day after rest after squats. But my sumos sucked. I am gonna keep trying though can't really judge after one time. It just didn't feel comfortable. Probably just need practice.
Where do you put your hands? For sumo I put them about 6" apart with an overhand grip. 16" for conv.
I think I have long legs for a midget and long arms. I am probably just screwed either way.

Wouldn't this put your hands on the smooth? And if it didn't, wouldn't it make it tough to clear your hips to lockout? I'm not mocking you, just curious. :)

Long legs + long arms usually makes a great deadlifter.

My hands are nearly in the same place for both. Slightly wider conventional.

Ya I put them on the smooth part. Is that why I am having trouble?

Just tried with hands on outside of smooth, 16". Seemed ok, but only 155. But this is where I put them for conventional, thought it was supposed to be narrower. I'll try them again wider.

Did 275 sumo on monday. Just don't like the feel of it, only my second time though. Feels harder on my back. Get a twinge that I shouldn't get at those weights. I did widen my grip, to the same as conventional. I know it might just be my form, but I didn't like it.

The smooth is foolish beisdes for hurting your grip, it makes it tough for you to clear your hips on lockout.

Would you wear a belt at a meet?

Also, despite your height and what you may think, you ARE built to deadlift. :) Your #'s speak for themselves, and so does the fact that you can not only just pull heavy, but PR week after week.

Alex.V
01-30-2003, 08:46 PM
I dunno, S, I'm not sure if it'll throw off my groove or not. I'm stronger with it, that's certain. But, then again, I' haven't tried it since I really started getting higher in poundage.

Built to deadlift? Naw. Built to withstand constant ass kicking? Yeah. If you saw the mile I had to pull the bar up, or my arm/torso/leg ratio, you'd take that back. ;)

Santiago
01-31-2003, 05:08 PM
OK, If you'd really like to talk about built to deadlift, we measured my ROM yesterday, and it was 9.5" with hands on the smooth and wearing socks .This was also with 135 on the bar. I'm imagining with the body compression/ arm stretching with maximal weights, I probably get down to about 9" with my normal grip and wrestling shoes. :)

Until I catch you tho, this all means nothing.

Speaking of 'built to deadlift', I was talking to a guy at my gym yesterday who must weigh all of 120lbs at 5'9'' who I constantly see DL'ing. I asked if he was interested in powerlifting, and he said he was a bit, but mostly was in it for general health. He then said one of his best friends was a powerlifter.

A guy by the name of Lamar Gant.

Thought that was pretty cool.

Regular sneakers. This is probably bad, these new balance have about an inch of padding in the heel, eh?

Santiago
02-14-2003, 04:43 AM
B you should try some wrestling shoes...besides for the obvious shorter ROM, there's zero chance for a thick foam sole to crush and let your ankles rollover....You could imagine that not being very comfy, especially when holding 625+ :)

chris mason

I was just curious, I use regular sneakers as well.

Monstar, what are you saying? Are you lifting from a 2" platform?

MonStar
02-14-2003, 10:42 AM
Two mats actually. Each rubber mat in my gym is ~1" and I put 2 of them on top of one another, and just pull regularly. Works pretty well for hittin my strength right off the floor.

chris mason
02-14-2003, 03:28 PM
Hmmm, you must be pulling 550+ standard then. Man, you are getting awefully strong, and fast.

Chris Rodgers
02-14-2003, 03:32 PM
That is a real good pull on mats. Those must be some thick-ass mats too. My mats are 1/2" thick.

MonStar
02-14-2003, 06:46 PM
Yeah I am guessing that I am most likely pulling something like 530-550 or so regularly. Something along those lines. Well see what happens next time I test my 1RM.

Latty---mine are definitely thicker than a 1/2". I am just guessing ~1" theyre probably anywhere from 3/4-1" I guess. I think its safe to say that my 1RM is probably in the ~535-540 region. Depending on how pissed off I get---for my deadlifts are all mental.

This was part of a full meet that we held at my house in preparation for our meet in 3 weeks. Just did 2 attempts on deads, 405 and 440. That is the heaviest I have pulled conventional in a while and it was the first time I pulled conventional in that suit. Went pretty well, lockout on 440 was slow, but smooth.

Wow Belial, you've managed to increase your max deadlift from 585 to 640 in a matter of 3 months.

Alex.V
02-27-2003, 05:49 PM
Damn. That ain't bad. I do have to say that technique has improved a LOT, though.

The way I see it, every week that goes by, the percentage (5 pounds) gets less and less, right? So each week is a smaller increment, relatively speaking.

I figure I'll keep progressing like this until 5 pounds approaches 0%. Then I'll plateau. At that point, I'll likely try westside.

:D

I have a question. How come only short guys seem to do tons of sumo deads in competition and all the tall, huge guys do conventional ones? I have seen all kinds of pics from world championships and such and the big Russian bear type guys seem to always do conventionals, and the shorter, lower weight class guys do sumos. I prefer conventionals myself, and I wouldnt call myself a Russian bear. Franco Columbu did conventionals as well and he was only an inch taller than myself. Alex is like 8.5 feet tall and he seems to favor sumos.
See, I'd think that the taller guys would do sumos to shorten the ROM.

Any insight?

It has to do with leverage. Supposedly conventional puts the taller lifter in a better position than sumo. Most shorter people should do sumo and most taller should do conventional. There are exceptions.

BTW, I suggest you use both styles, I was just saying that most people would be stronger in the above scenario.

I'll probably try for 490, 492, or 495 depending on what I weigh next Sunday. I can get non-multiples of five by mixing metric and regular plates.

One chart has me at 500. The others have me around 490-ish. I'll probably go for 495 next week and maybe pull a 3x bw at a weight closer to my normal weight. 162.5 just sounds really light. Plus, 5 plates will look good locked out with!:)

Wow, the road to triple bw deadlift has been dead the last week.

Anyway:

I just hit a double BW dead....405 @ 195lbs

Nothing sensational, but it was definitely a personal accomplishment.

365 @ 180 on my second week deading. I hope to hit 405 by March, but 540 is not in the forseeable future. :D
