if someone is to intake less calories than it takes to maintain their body weight, but at the same time if they take in enough protein, will they be losing fat and muscle or just fat? in my view just fat but im not sure?

a little bit of both. We workout hard and heavy during cuts to try and trick our body to thinking we need to hold on to that muscle and to burn the fat instead.

Yup. And at the end of the day how successful we are at tricking the body is largely genetic.
