HST Day 2 of 10 Rep Cycle - 1/14/04 Wednesday
Late night workout, started around 9:30 and finished by 11 or so.

pre-workout: 20 oz over-priced Starbucks coffee.

DB Incline
10 x 45 x 2, 7 x 45
- These went pretty well...I'm hoping to max out at 10 x 60 by next week Friday.

DB Rows
10 x 50 x 3
- Pretty easy.

Front Squats
10 x 85 x 2
- Narrow stance, to parallel or lower, as my knee allows. On the second set I accidentally went to rock-bottom and felt something twinge in my knee, which was a bit scarey. Overall, though, these went well and I think I should be able to continue progressing.

Sumo Deadlifts
10 x 155 x 2
- Good times. Went well.

Lat Row
10 x 7 x 2
- Easy. Just wanted more work for my back.

Seated DB Military
10 x 30, 8 x 30
- Someone was picking their ass at the seated BB press station, so I did these. Its amazing how weird they feel, haven't done them in ages.

CG Bench
10 x 85
- Fast and easy. Wasn't sure what weight to use, so I might have went too light.

Comments:Pretty happy with this. Got day two in on schedule, despite the late night. Friday will be tough, so I might have to move that workout to saturday. But I'm getting back into routine and not feeling quite as fat.

p.s. - I got two pugs from a rescue two weeks ago. Currently, they are humping each other. They are both males.

now playing: Plastikman - Closer

You're catching quicker than I'm gaining though. :(

I'm sure I can't keep it up for very long though. 60lbs over 7 weeks is a bit much as it is, as far as bench goes. I am putting on weight slowly, as needed, so in the 4 weeks I plan on bulking, perhaps I can hit around 185. Then, I'll cut a little, then bulk slowly. By that time, you'll be like 220 and I'll be a weak 180.

galileo

I go to Sheetz on the way to class and pick up whatever is cheaper. The chocolate chip ones were $3.59 a piece but the chocolate brownie and peanut ones are like $2.99. I think this week I went for chocolate brownie. No coffee cravings though.

I don't mind the taste of the protein plus bars. They seem a lot better than the Big 100 (whatever) they sell.

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif scott
I shattered my right leg when I was 14 and was bed-ridden for 6 months with a full leg cast. To get around I had to use my left leg exclusively, so it became ridiculously stronger than the right. If I pay attention to this, I can adjust accordingly, but if not I end up pushing more with my favored leg.

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif budiak
Pretty much what you said, but make sure to slide your head off the end of the bench and use a small towel to place between your head and plate. The problem is that I can't go any higher than 45lbs with this method and with no assistance I can do a 4x12 with it. On the bright side, none of my dress shirts button up to the top anymore, so my neck must be growing.

You *could* use a dumbell.

You *could* also use an EZ curl bar and just hold it on your dome on top of the towel...it'd just take a bit more balance.

galileo
01-21-2004, 09:24 AM
I've considered the dumbbell, but I wasn't sure how it was going to stay on my head without me using a lot of arm effort. I was picturing the handle rolling down my face as I picked my head up, crushing my nose. Also, I am not even sure if my head will fit between the plates on one. I don't have an easy curl bar, but that may be a better selection (when I get a real gym). But since you mentioned it, next time I'll give it a shot. w0rd.

You could always pick up a harness.

ElPietro
01-21-2004, 12:31 PM
They make some kind of harness for neck raises. I think I saw it at the elitefts website, but not 100% sure. Even still, you could make one out of a belt I'm sure. Really all you need is some kind of band that will go around your forehead and enable you to attach a weight at the end. If you just maybe wad up some kind of padding on the belt where it sits on your forehead so it's more comfy, I'm sure you could string a buncha 10 or 25lb plates on it easy. Or use whatever material you think is best. The one I saw was a chain with some kinda leather or rubber forehead strap.

ElPietro
01-21-2004, 12:32 PM
OOo, or you could buy like the cheapest helmet you can find, and then just drill some holes in the back for a chain, and then string the weight. Of course this would be a "home use" device only, unless you like to look like the ultimate freak at the gym.

Wow, thinking of neck harness design just killed 3 minutes!

My dad had one of those old school leather things. It was way to big for my head to I had to drape a towel folded up over my head and then put the thing on. Its pretty cool to be doing neck raises with 70-80lbs.

Do you only have 25's and 45's? We used to have some thin 25's and you could stack those 3 deep and do bench neck raises before it got too much trouble to balance.

My 25's are thick and small, which makes them harder to stack. I tried to add smaller plates first, then stack the bigger on top (like a 10 with a 45 on top), but that didn't work at all.

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif justinassyou
I'm quite careful now that I'm aware of it. The left leg has been stronger since the accident, it took about 8 years for the right leg to fully catch up in size (without much training in between, though).

Well, I haven't taken too many measurements but I'll tell you what I know. It was a good bulk, but I look softer today and my weight hasn't changed from last week, so I will maintain a little then cut for a short time, then do some more lean gaining some more.

Start Weight : 167
End Weight : 180 (+13)

Start Bodyfat (3-site): 7.78%
End Bodyfat (3-site): 8.0% (+.22)
Note: This means I'm around 11% in the AM, due to caliper formulas sucking.

Lean Mass Change : +11.6lbs
Fat Mass Change : +1.4lbs

The last time I measured my arms they were 15.75", my legs were 24" about mid-leg and over 25" at the upper, and my chest was almost 43", but I'll get more final measurements soon. All of my measurements are up a decent bit.

Here are some pictures from the deal. It was the evening and I was bloated from all of the day's carbs (I'm super carb sensitive), so be gentle.

Mik
01-26-2004, 09:29 AM

I didn't sleep very well last night, which was likely due to me forgetting to turn down the heat. I was covered in sweat the first half of the night, then freezing to death from being wet and cold.

Need for Speed Underground Saved My Car
I walked out to my car to find it covered in a sheet of ice. I don't exactly own an ice scraper, so I used a plastic hardee's cup that I had been using to drink milk in the mornings. As I stepped onto the blacktop, I slid the entire length of the car, finding myself by the hatch without taking a step. Not good. I drove to work and about 5 minutes away, I took a bend at about 15mph in 2nd. When I say "I took a bend" what I really mean is that I intended to take a bend, but my car was obviously opposed to this idea, so it continued along the path it was originally headed, propelling me towards a guardrail. Thanks to my recent love affair with the racing game NFS:Underground, I've learned the subtleties of e-braking and drifting. With a quick downshift to 1st and some tricky e-brake/steering manuevers, I managed to guide my car away from the guardrail and into a snow-filled ditch. Since it had been raining, the snow was so thick that my car didn't go very far, so I guess the winner is me. So, Need For Speed Undergound saved my car. $49.99 well spent.

I had a best friend for many years of my childhood. A while back I learned that her father had cancer (lukemia) and it was a terminal type. They put him through chemo and such and he recovered, but he's relapsed this week. Now they're forced to give him the chemo that destroys your brain and eyes and everything else in hopes to keep him alive. I was fairly close to him as a teenager, so this sucks. I feel extremely bad for her, because she has so many other things to deal with and this is something she really doesn't need. If you happen to pray, please do.

As I eat a bag of cookies to wash down my McDonald's chicken nugget extra value meal, I am designing my cut. It's nothing fancy, but it should do the trick (or at least begin to do said trick).

2215 kcals
fat : 95g
carbs: 146g
fiber: 28g
protein: 199g

Meal structure is as follows:

· 3 eggs, 28g fat-free cheddar, 1 apple, 1 cup spinach, 1 cup green tea
· 10oz cochee, 5 walnuts, 42g brocolli, 42g carrots, 1/4 red pepper, 3g fish oil caps
· 8oz chicken, 1 cup spinach, 42g brocolli, 1 tbsp flaxseed oil, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
· 6oz turkey, 42g brocolli, 42g carrots, 1/4 red pepper, 5 walnuts, 3g fish oil caps, 1 cup green tea
· 1 can tuna, 1 cup spinach, 42g brocolli, 1 tbsp olive oil, 1 tbsp apple cider vinegar
· 8oz plain yogurt, 2oz oatmeal, 3g fish oil caps, 1 cup green tea

On workout days, I will add 2 small protein shakes with ~30g dextrose a piece. I would like some input on this, so feel free to tear this apart.

Addition: I will also be refeeding once per week until I need additional days.

02.20.2004 - Getting Ripped : Day 1 of 56

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif Prolegomenon
Today is the first day of long 8 weeks.

I'm still not 100% sure on the house deal as of yet. The owners are asking for 10% more than their last appraisal, which was only in July. They justified this with new windows and other cosmetic upgrades (paint), but I somehow doubt it will appraise for 10% higher over 6 months. I've told them this and had my lender order an appraisal on the property. Once I get the appraisal, then I'll really know for sure if the deal is going to go well or not. If it appraises at 3-5% higher as I suspect, they're not going to be happy. But, my hands are completely tied because I can't borrow more than the value of the house, so I guess we'll just wait and see. I really want the house, but I don't want to make that so apparent that they have an upper hand. On the other side of it, I don't want them to think I'm barely interested so that they move on. What useless stress!

...but now I just learned that they were wrong on the original appraisal date and it was actually June of 2002, so it was almost 2 years ago. That puts things in a better perspective and it looks like I'll be in good shape!

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif Prandial Promulgation
My diet is pretty much where I want it to be. A lot of vegetables and consistency. I will be drinking about a gallon of water throughout the day.

· 6oz turkey, 42g brocolli, 42g carrots, 1/4 red pepper, 5 walnuts, 3g fish oil caps, 1 cup green tea

Cosmetic upgrades rarely add much value to a house, especially stuff like paint or flooring, because so much of that is up to an individual's taste. New windows would add some value, but I'm sure they wouldn't add 10%.

What were your calories and stuff before? Do you think just jumping into the cutting diet is better than gradually decreasing the calories? I might not go directly to that but give yourself some slack for a couple weeks gradually tightening it down. Probably shouldn't need to refeed until a couple weeks or so really into the cut.

The spinach is terrible but maybe adding a bit of olive oil to the vinegar and using a bit of Mrs. Dash. A 1/4th of a tbspn has nothing in it but can add to the taste, and there's a ton of different flavors. It helped me get mine down.

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif Prolegomenon
I woke up fairly hungry, which is a positive sign. Downed some ephedrine and got myself moving. My arms are feeling pretty broke today and I wouldn't consider it DOMS. It's more like them saying "Oh my God, what the fück did you do to me?" I may end up skipping the arm portion of my depletion workout today in order to not destroy them further. We'll see.

Losing most of my internet access at work, so it looks like my posting will be even more sporadic than it is currently. That completely sucks, but the company is all up on this security kick and they're using it as a good excuse to crack down on employees. I'll have 1 hour a day for personal use (which is taken away in 10 minute incriments as you view new webpages), but the managers will be receiving reports telling how much of that you use, so even if you use under your limit, they're watching.

House plans are moving along as hoped. The appraisal is scheduled for Thursday morning and Wednesday night my parents and marlynn's parents want to go see the house. I'm excited for them to see it!

That stinks about your internet access...good old corporate Big Brother  Maybe they should think about getting rid of all those layers of management that just go to meetings all day and "look busy" if they want to improve productivity. And security is just a buzzword/scapegoat for any kind of unpleasant policy decisions these days.

02.26.2004 - Getting Ripped : Day 4 of 56

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif Prolegomenon
Today begins the refeed!

I'm pleased so far with my progress. There is a noticable difference in my love handles and even my legs leaned up a little this time. I've been taking my ab pinch from a lower location about 0.5" below and 0.5" to the right of my belly button. It provides a higher and seemingly more accurate measurement. Through the old style, I'm back around 8.75, but I think this way will be more indicative of my true bodyfat in the end.

Bad news for me. I'm moving about 30 minutes away from where I currently live to a location that's an hour away from my current job site. I'm doing this because I was informed that a new location would be available 10 minutes from where I'm moving. Now they're having doubts as to when and if this will occur. I hope the new building is pretty high, because when this falls through I'll need something to jump off.

You know everytime I do this final depletion, I think it's going to be easy, but when it's over I feel like I just lost an MMA tournament in the final round. Like, I feel happy that I made it this far, but I got the **** kicked out of me, so I'm not that happy. Anyhow, I did some hammer curls and decided that my arms had enough for a while. I increased the weight on a few exercises since last round, but it isn't really easy to do that for all of them since the rep range is so high and I trained for strength in the 3-5 area. Alright, time to drink sugar and whimper softly.

Needless to say, UD2 sapped my strength a bit. It could be far worse, but I did lose some pounds off of my core lifts, which always sucks. I'm sure when I start bulking again it'll come back, so I won't cry too much.

Not sure why I even bothered with the calf raises. Too easy and prolly hurt my back.

Back to the grind. I have a feeling this is going to be a hard week because I'm working the 4am-1pm shift, which totally ****s up my workout/diet schedule. We'll see, I guess.

I checked my pinches this morning and I didn't do any noticeable damage this weekend, so looks like I'm good to go. Still sitting in the 10% area by 3-site, but I have these unsightly love handles and breasts to deal with.

On the first set of incline db presses, I strained my right front delt a little. That's kinda strange, since my left front delt is usually the troublesome one. I continued on and after the workout it's just a little stiff. No biggie. This workout seemed to be far less strenuous than last weeks, so I think I need to increase my weights slightly. Also, I'm going to do a little more warming up just in case. I was stretching a little before I began, which is probably why I hurt my shoulder. Stupid stretching.

03.04.2004 - Getting Ripped : Day 11 of 56

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/wbbboxes.gif Prolegomenon
I was so hungry last night I almost ate my own arm.

Today I pinched a 9.1%, dropping me 1% from last week and as of last night about 2lbs. If I weigh myself this weekend I bet I'll be a good 4-5lbs heavier.

The whole house thing is a ton of ups and downs. I made an offer, I thought was fair. They were none too pleased with it, so after much consideration, I'm making a new offer a bit higher. Anxiety = yes.

On the bright side, my bank told me I could go over $250,000 for a loan if I was so inclined. There's this fancy ass home I was looking at that was $225k and I am doing everything in my power to talk myself out of such a stupid move. :)

It's all about payments right man? I mean, don't buy a house and become a prisoner in it because you can't afford to live comfortably. Make sure that it's not a major disaster everytime a mortgage payment comes out. Also, although I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but make sure you factor in all the added expenses of home ownership. Not sure of your current situation, so if you already own then you'd know of all the crap that can add up.

I know my mortgage is my biggest monthly expense, but I also know it only represents about half of my total expenses each month. Maybe even less than half. Of course, I live in the Union of Canadian Socialists Republic, so I'm sure it's a bit different here.

I am totally aware. I would never ever ever buy a house that was 100,000 more than my point of comfort, even if I could technically afford it. I would be sporting a $1700 a month mortgage and with my car and utilities, I'd be pretty much bled dry by the end of it. I don't currently own, but all modesty aside, I am a bit wiser than the average guy my age. I know better than to put myself in a huge hole and I've managed to be debt free up until now while living quite comfortably.

But on my current deal, I've given myself enough room to have from $700-$1150 free every month, plus I'm getting a promotion here soon so that'll give me a few hundred extra a month. I should be set!

Oh yeah, I'm glad I'm not in Canada. The end.

That's awesome. My Mortgage is only about $200 more than I was paying to rent a 1-bedroom apt. I almost always have money left over every month after paying bills. I just got my tax return and I'm getting my annual bonus and a fat commission check next week. I also just got a 60 cent raise.
