...I'd like to hit 200x8 on leg extensions, 300x1 deadlifts, 80x8 incline press, 120x8 db rows, +35x8 on chins, and since I'm going to start bench pressing again this week, possibly 210x8...

One month later and I have achieved pretty much all of these goals, shy of my db rows and deadlifts. I'm not even sure what I deadlift, but according to my last set (235x8) and my 1RM calculator, it's around 292, so I feel I could pull the 300.

My db rows...they seemed to halt fairly quickly. I'm not exactly sure why, but my back days have lacked the energy necessary to excel.

Sorry to hear that, rookie.

Dips are something that have always been a stronger lift for me.

EC, I have severe...and I mean severe squat envy. I can't even load a 95lb bar on my shoulders without my back being rocked for 3 months, let alone do over 300lbs for reps. I may try hack squats because they seem less difficult on the spine, but I bet my weights will be closer to 135 thatn 300. My poor, weak legs. Poor and weak.

Having clearly defined goals will push you faster in the right direction though hon....

As long as you are constantly improving - and judging by your recent achievements you are - thats whats important :)

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/arrow.gif deadlifts : 140x8, 230x6, 280x1, 300x1, 315x1 (3 plates!!!), 335
w00t! First time I've deaded 1RM! I mentally lost the last one. At least that's what I told my muscles when they started crying about how ugly and fat they are.

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/arrow.gif weighted chinups : +38x8, +38x8
Felt damned good.

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/arrow.gif dumbbell rows : 113x8:8, 113x8:8
These were clean reps. Very clean. Much more clean than the last time. If those reps had nuts, I wouldn't be afraid to lick them.

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/arrow.gif barbell curls : 95x8, 95x8
These weren't too bad. Nice ROM and only minor torso movement.

Excellent workout! The deads really pumped me the **** up! Schwwweeeet!

It's German. For above/super.

Ex:

Deutschland, Deutschland Uber Alles.
Uber Alles in der Welt.

Nietzche's Ubermensch = superman/overman

And so forth.

The article didn't over this. It wasn't even an article per se. It was just a bunch of quotations from newpaper articles that have used it recently. The NY Times does this with fad words occasionally in the Week in Review section. It wasn't used like Galileo used it, though, so I guess he's kinda safe. Its overuse is as an adjective , e.g., Uber-weight routine, Uber-<something> etc. Not 'the uber.' And certainly not 'teh uber'

This has been one of the most stressful days at work to date. I'm involved in a pretty big project and I get an email (3rd hand) about a conference call that did not include me. I must convey the gravity of me knowing every bit and piece of this project. I am doing the primary testing and any gaps could result in a very drawn out situation. I'm so ticked-off it's ridiculous. In our company, like most non-tech companies, the IS/IT department is an afterthought and really considered a nuissance to every other department. They don't quite get the fact that without us none of their precious systems will work. So, what happens? When we are put on a project we are treated like ****. If I wasn't so low on the totem-pole, I'd tell them to shove their mother****ing warehouse system up their mother****ing asses, eat ****, die, reincarnate as a dung beetle, eat more ****, and have their entrails pecked out by a large predatorial bird.

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/box.jpg Goals
I've decided to come up with some goals for this year of training. I am trying to keep these goals modest enough to achieve while still hard enough so I have something to work toward. I find it hard to judge how much of a gain should occur over the course of an entire year. I've lowered some of them a few times before I decided to keep them.

Goals 2003
Subgoals [()'s] are not necessarily equivalents, but they would also be nice.
My current stats are listed in blue.

Bodyweight and composition: 180-185 @ 8-10% [180 @ 14%]

Deadlift: 405x1 [335x1]
Bench Press: 275x1[260x1 (estimated)]
Dips: +125x8 [+88x8]
Chins: +70x8 [+38x8]
DB Rows: 143x8 [113x8]
Incline DB Bench: 100x8 [80x8]
<insert random leg goals>

There you have it. I think these goals are somewhat attainable. I know I'll get a few of them.

Mik
01-23-2003, 08:56 AM
Ya gotta love corporate stupidity! In our organization, we've spent the last year spending a buck trying to save a dime.:bang:

I like those goals! To me they look achievable considering the way you've been gaining. 185 @ 8-10% would be sweet.

rookiebldr
01-23-2003, 09:18 AM
I hear you on the IT department rant. They are cost that needs to be controlled or ****ed. On the other hand, IT in the business is super-sweet. :)

Ah, goals finally - maybe I should look at some. Goals look good there Galileo. I think you have room to move on the deads from 335 so 405 looks great, bench might be a bit low - not too much and if you can get 143 on rows then I'll owe you a box of detour bars.

180 at 10% would be sweet, are you going bulk again to get down to that?

galileo
01-23-2003, 10:35 AM
Mik : Typical corporation. I'd love to hit 185 @ 8% ;)

rookie : Better get ready to buy those Detour bars, because I'm on my way! Yes, there will be a cut then a bulk and possibly another cut.

I think you could aim higher on bench press. You might be surprised what you could do on a tested max. Mine was underestimated by about 10 pounds the last time I maxed. Who knows, you could be doing 270 right now. So, I'd say to aim for something like 290 or 300.

ectx
01-23-2003, 11:38 AM
I agree with Ryan, I think your bench goal is a bit low. I lowered some of mine, btw.

Alex.V
01-23-2003, 11:56 AM
Definitely attainable. Chins might be tough, but bench you'll likely blow away.

btw, "cochee" still looks WAY too much like "coochie" to me. I'm like... 7.5 oz? How on earth do you weigh one of those?

Franco
01-23-2003, 01:20 PM
You've set attainable goals to a degree. I definately feel that you will blow away the bench and dead predictions, on the other hand the other lifts may take just that bit longer.

Fudomyo
01-23-2003, 01:34 PM
That's a heavy row. It's a great 1 yr goal however.

I'd go for 315 bench, and 110 incline press since you are a year out. Of course, you could go HomeYields incline +1 (which is my goal, heh heh).

Buy a leg press, should be your yearly goal for legs. ebay!

I decided for some reason that this morning would be a good day to weigh myself. I'm down to about 177 and I don't know if it's water loss, fatloss, or muscle loss. My diet is fairly consistent but there are some days I don't get enough food, so I guess it's hard to tell. I may take my measurements again this weekend to see where I stand.

I did a front double bi in the mirror this weekend and realized that my biceps need some serious attention. Cold they measured at around 15". Compared to my shoulders, they aren't doing too well. Plus, my triceps are quite sizable, meaning the bicep itself is even worse. Time to step up the arm training a bit. I am thinking it may be time to switch up routines.

This weekend I wanted to do some slow presses just to get my chest a little better worked. Turns out my left shoulder was acting up. I did 60's on the incline db press, but it hurt too much to continue. I popped a few glucosamine tabs and rested. I hope it's not too bad. I hate dealing with this crap. Anyhow, there is no pain unless I do the presses, so my guess is it is just pulled.

I ate junk food! JUNK FOOD! Plus, I didn't get enough protein. I justified the junk food with my lack of overall calories. I am not sure if the weight I am losing is water weight or muscle. My measurements haven't changed a lot but neither have my caliper pinches. A little lower in the chest. I'm not making a conscious effort to lose fat yet, so I just gotta keep on keepin on.

Are you going to add some more direct bi work? And changing the split a bit may be the added kick you need.

Nice leg workout Galileo. Curls and extensions must've been tough with the 2-1-2.
Never tried lunges.

Mik : Curls were murder. Extensions were'nt so bad, but my knees were still a little sore today. I am not exactly sure what I should do at this point. I don't like knee pain. It's even hard to tell if it's really knee or just lower quad pain. Lunges (rear) are kind of like doing a one-legged squat. I try to use my leading quad to the highest degree possible. Then I picture myself squatting the equivalent weight. Let's see, that would be 78*2 = 156 one-legged or 316x8 two-legged! Ok well it doesn't really work out that way, but I still pwn.

Is your leg curl/ext. a plate loaded attachment on your bench?

Yes. :(

To compensate for the inconsistent force, I set the lower pad of my bench to a higher angle so parallel is further away.

As I pop my second EC tab of the day I realize why I haven't had a lot of palavers over the last few months. I wasn't all friggen wired on ephedra! I love this stuff. My mind goes a million miles a minute and I can't seem to control my hands. Go CNS Go!

You know what I hate? People. You know why? Of course you don't...you are people. I hate people because they are stupid. You're stupid, he's stupid, she is definitely stupid, and me...well I'm pretty damned stupid as well. We pick the stupidest to be our leaders and let the runners-up entertain us for large sums of money. The smart ones are underpaid for their hard work which keeps our society alive, which makes them very ****ing stupid. We live in a drab, pathetic, and (you guessed it) stupid world with only minor sparks of creativity, honesty, and novelty left. Our brethren roam in tribes and generally feed upon the weak. Here comes my favorite part (oh yeah!)...we can't do ****-all about it! We're grandfathered in, so to speak. I see these stupid people protesting against the war and half of them are there for the wrong reasons while the other half have no idea that they aren't doing anything except freezing their asses off to show other countries how "United" we're not. It will take something quite drastic (think Independence Day) to change things in any way, but just like 9/11, I'm sure the world will be back to its old ways in a matter of months.

Now I'm beginning to lose my sense of creativity and hope, which is the only thing that kept me going for a while. I have had this ridiculous drive during the last 5 days to do something, something special, but things constantly hold me back. Money, time, energy, and now I am at a loss for words. As I begin to involve myself in a creative process I find that I fall short. My voice, thoughts, and vision are not where they used to be. Maybe I just see the past through rose-coloured glasses. Maybe I was never poetic? Maybe the things I thought were real weren't. As some aspects of my life improve others seem to fall apart. I'm not going to settle though. Not this time. I aspire so much to give myself and family more than this 8-5 lifestyle.

Then again, it could just be the EC talking.

Teh End

Loss for words? I don't think so. Time for a vacation, maybe! Not everything happens spot on at the same time or at the same speed. As long as more things progress then get stale then you are making progress. Looking back is like looking through rose-coloured (nice Canadian/English spelling) glasses which is good for reflection but not for dewelling on. It still sounds like you have a plan and getting there will be half the fun. So make the journey enjoyable.

Lots of changes have been going on at work lately and I am finally feeling the trickle-down style effects. I'm going to be dealing with new areas of the business which is quite exciting. I watched Requiem for a Dream with the woman last night. What a reflective and disturbing movie. The part that freaks me out the most is Sara. She is all whacked on speed and she doesn't even know it. It's sad because I empathize her pain and loneliness and its translation into an obsessive focus. I think a lot of people can. She wanted to be on TV so much because she felt like she had nothing. If you haven't seen the movie, I suggest you rent it and watch it during the day. The dreams that come after watching it before bed can be quite disturbing. The best part of the movie, of course, was seeing Jennifer Connely naked. Not so much the "naked chick" factor as much as the "freaky weird" factor from watching Labyrinth. You may recall a Palaver from the very beginning of this jounral regarding her (A Beautiful Mind). I suggest reading it if you missed it!

Imagine:
You're a huge, hairy, mean Viking, raping and pillaging your way across the known world. While attacking some monastery, a feisty monk decides to defend himself and stabs you. As you fall to the ground, your heart pounding loudly in your ears, your sight darkens, and you see a beautiful, blond, buxom Valkyrie shimmering in white and gold armor coming to whisk you away to Valhalla where you will fight and feast for eternity. But as the darkness clears from your vision, and your resting place is revealed to you, you realize that, rather than being in the heaven of the Nordic peoples...

Well, this was a crappy weekend. On Friday I didn't get home until midnight, which sucked ass. I called Budiak when I got out of work and he was at the bar (before 9:00 his time). Lucky sunnavabitch. Then Saturday, I tried to have people down for a party and 2 people were sick, two had to work, and I just told the remaining people not to bother showing up. I drank one Jack n' Coke and watched Saturday Night Live. Not exactly the best Saturday night one could imagine. Sunday I was sick pretty much most of the day, which wasn't good. I feel a little better today, but I am being very careful. At least today I noticed my error on the dip poundage, which was in my favor by 10lbs. I feel a lot less pussy now, although I had a lot more in me, which was destroyed by my headache and sinuses.

Ace. 83 was nice and tough. Then my second set about rep six, I stepped on my ****ing shoelace. I almost fell down and crushed my face into a mangled pile of goo. Glad I didn't.

Ham Curls : 90x6, 90x8
I set these up so I had a longer ROM. That put a bit more strain on the hams. Not sure if this is good or bad...

Leg Extensions (2-1-2): 90x8. 145x8, 155x8
I forgot to put the pillow behind the plates the first time, so it ****ed my shins up nicely. EXCELLENT. You may say, "Galileo, weren't you doing like 200x8 about a month ago." As per usual, rookie ****ed up. I think your last set of words to me was LEAVE EARLY. I didn't leave early enough, got stuck at the border with traffic (I guess seeing rippling arm muscles popping out of the my sleeves tipped them off that I was to be ****ed with) plus a little bit of lake effect snow slowed me down enough that I arrived in Pitts to late for us to get a workout in. :( I tried Galileo but I guess it just wasn't to be.

However, Galileo and I did get a chance to chat, drink and eat before I needed to head off to my final destination. You were a great host and I thank you for that. It was a bit of trip for such a short time together but to meet you in person was worth it. Next time it definitely shouldn't be so short.

Chest Day

Music: TOOL- AENIMA

Since I didn't get to workout with rookie yesterday, today will be chest day and I will attempt to make it a kick-ass event.

dips : bwx8, +38x8, +73x5, +100.5x8
First set felt great, I feel very strong in my chest today.
Second set feeling great as well!
Third set...cakeroonie. I upped it from +98 to +100.5 for my final set.
Final set : I let out a huge ****ing "YES!!!" as I blew this away, rep by painful rep. The last two I felt my grip shift but I pushed on. I owned +100.5x8. This was my old lifetime goal. Ever since I've heard of dips I wanted to do +100x1 then as I got stronger, +100x8 felt like it may be a possibility by the end of my career.

flat bench press : 45x8, 135x8, 185x6, 185x7
I've added these again to work on my chest more. I am making my grip a bit wider because I don't think my chest gets sufficient punishment. With narrow grip (index finger inside the knurl) I was doing sets around 210, but I can tell already after a set of 135 that these are a bit more taxing.
...I was correct. I could've probably pushed out more, but I don't have a spotter. My hands hurt. Ha! I haven't benched in a while so I feel it was a decent workout anyhow.

thick handle lying db tricep extensions: 37.5x8, 37.5x8
Wow these reps were intense. I thought of Belial while I did them. He ranted about putting everything into it and that's what I did. Going to keep these the same next week because the last reps used a little shoulder.

At the end of the workout, I'd say it was great! I set a huge PR and my hands[grip] hurt like ****! My triceps even feel a little burn for a change. Good workout!

Feeling pretty good this week. Much better than last, at least. I have a ton of new support work to do on our shipping system, which is pretty good since I enjoy keeping busy. My weight was 174lbs this morning, which is slightly disturbing. I'm not doing a wonderous job of maintenance at this point, but I am keeping my strength up. I give myself pep-talks in the morning. I say things in the mirror like, "Don't worry buddy, it's just water!" and "Come on big guy, you can do it!" and sometimes (in a Duff Man voice) "A SEXY BITCH. YES YOU ARE. OH YEAH!"

This would be my new diet. What the hell, right? It's about 2500 calories so fat and the split is 25%f/25%c/50%p. I ate this way yesterday for the most part and I plan on doing the same now. I am going to do HIIT cardio once next week and probably twice the following week, slowly working my way into a cut. Going to keep the calories the same though and see what happens.
Note: I'm still working on my last meal. My post workout shake will fill the gap for now.

Happy Valentine's Day

http://www.paledecay.com/upload/images/box.jpg Prolegomenon and Prefatory Pontifications
I'm tired this morning. I don't like being tired. So when are we going to destroy North Korea? I guess when we find an import that's worth our time. Not that I like or condone our war machine, but I assume that we're already in the handbasket, so why not press the button?

It's Valentine's Day. This is a dreaded time of the year for me. Last year about this time my life was terribly painful for around six full months. I've noticed my mind creeping back to this quite often as of late. I'm not exactly prepared for anything like that to occur again and if it does I'm not sure what I'd do.

On a positive, I grabbed some wine and a rose and I'm going to have a quiet evening at home with the girlfriend. We're going to watch a movie and with any luck have ridiculous amounts of sex! Depends on her wine consumption. ;)

Hello, hello, hello! Haven't been here in a while.

First, Rookie, I believe I was the one who first suggested Montreal Chicken (and steak) seasoning in this journal, though you were quick to second the recommendation. I'm waaaayyy to lazy to page back to actually back up my claim, however, so, ahem. I'll leave it alone. It is great, though, isn't it?

Second, Captain Piddles, add that to my snow pic thread in general chat. I know you're not in PA, but there's been more snow elsewhere (obviously). Kimpy posted pics in it. Throw your car in there, too. That sight would make me drop my shovel, turn around and go back in the house for Irish coffee. Fukc the car! I talked to a prospect in Baltimore today and they got 27 inches. Yikes!

Third, Galileo, you are WAAAAYY too young to have to resort to my tactic of plying the missus with vino to get your freak on. If you start now, what are you going to be doing after fifteen years of marriage?!

Fourth. . . I'm not coming out to Pitt to return the rental. It started snowing and I found out I could dump it hear for 350 clams and said screw it. I will be back through soon, though, and we'll definitely have to go to Hooters and that gym (in reverse order, actually or only one will happen).

I'm getting my new Graphite Metallic 300M tomorrow. Woot, woot!!

This has been a crappy morning, but I'm trying to put a positive spin on things. I'm way too negative anymore and it is becoming a burden. I had to spend 15 minutes getting my girlfriend's car off of black ice and onto pavement, some bitch tried to wreck into me when I was merging (yes, she really really tried...the horn was honking and she sped up quite a bit), and the ice made the commute less than pleasurable. Oh well.

I am sick of being fat. I've gotten fatter and fatter as my "bulk" has ended. I've been paying less attention to what I eat and began eating for pleasure again. Well today this stops. "Start a diet on Friday," you ask? Well I'm a crazy sunamabitch. Today I weigh 176lbs and I am a carrying a pound or two of extra fat. According to my calipers I am at 14.6%...which makes me sad. My goal is to hit 8%.

http://www.hollowmedia.com/images/box.jpg Mastication and Deglutitionhttp://www.hollowmedia.com/images/star5.gif
This is an update on my new diet. It consists of five meals that are 25%/25%/50% with the heavy side being protein. Too much protein, you say? Lick me. Where's the fifth meal, you ask? I'm still not sure on that one. Until I can figure it out, I will likely repeat my tuna meal because it is the cheapest. I think cottage cheese and flax oil may be the answer. I'm going to shoot for around 2300 calories I think. I'm about 20lbs heavier than when I cut on 2000, so it may be the ticket. Somedays I'll eat more and do cardio. I think this cut may last about 12 weeks, depending on a bunch of factors.

Seeing your diet layed out now does seem like a lot of protein, but go for it. I think I'll be trying something simular on my bulk - only more calories. I'm also surprised at the ALA quantity. I was assuming you would use more.

Finally, how was the workout? Hopefully the break has helped somewhat.

I did a small, weak workout today. I haven't shaken this cold yet, so I kept the number of exercises low and tried to feel the form. The first few sets felt pretty weak on the bench, but after I got rolling it was slightly better.

Bench Press : 95x8, 135x8, 155x8, 165x8, 175x8M 185x8
The 185x8 was shockingly easy. I don't want to do more than 6 sets on bench today though, else I'd try 190 or so.

dumbbell tricep extensions : 35x8, 35x8
I hate coughing before, during, and after a set. Can you believe that ****? Time for a Nyquil and whey shake.

I weighed myself today and I came in at 173 dry. That's a 3lb loss from friday. That's Not A Good Thing(tm). I don't know if it was gastric emptying, water retention, or lots of loss but I didn't expect that drastic of a change since I've been roughly following this diet plan for a few weeks (but not totally dedicated to it). It could be because I am working out less due to my back and other circumstances. I don't know. 3lbs would take a huge calorie deficit to accomplish in only five days, so I'm going to assume it is water weight and take it from there.

On a positive, I started playing the game Animal Crossing for GameCube. Holy **** is it addictive. It uses timed events and other junk to make it seem like the game is still going on even when you're gone. The animals who live in the village even ask where you've been if you haven't been on during the day. It's sweet. I went fishing and caught myself a bass. My character said, "If I can catch myself a drummer, I'll start a band!" Funny ****ing stuff. Anyhow, the girlfriend loves the game since it's "cute" so she doesn't mind watching me play. That's A Good Thing(tm) since she usually bitches about all activities not involving her.

It could be because I am working out less due to my back and other circumstances. I don't know. 3lbs would take a huge calorie deficit to accomplish in only five days, so I'm going to assume it is water weight and take it from there.

It's gotta be. Don't worry about it.

I have to ask.

What are the other three?

Glad you're feeling better (in the upper respiratory system, at least - if it ain't one damn thing, it's another.)

And...I miss Meatwad . Hey! If you're not using him you should bequeath him to me!!! I solemnly vow to give him a loving home. I will give him a popsicle every 15 minutes, he can listen to "I want candy" all he wants, and I will le him ride my 10-speed. Cause you know, he would kill somebody in front of they mama for a 10-speed.

8100d : I'm going to let it go, but it's slightly disturbing to approach 170.

carolinagirl : welcome! The five things I couldn't live without : detour bars, dip/chin belt, oatmeal, my GTI, and my girlfriend. Although I'm thinking detour bars shall be getting replaced by Animal Crossing. Oh yeah, here you go (see attached file)! I trust ya with it :)

All fixed up and going well. It was only a minor issue, it is just a shame that it had to take up two of my days.

Workout

weighted chins : bwx8, +25x8, +25x6
Oh wonderful! I struggled with +25. Not everyday you synaptically de-facilitate your way out of +20lbs on chinups. +45, I'll see you in another month or so.

db rows : 113x8:8.
These hurt my hands...odd.

I'm super tired so I'll end it here. I'll do more volume later, but for now this is about what my body is limiting me to.

Finally a workout! :( I guess the rest didn't do you much good. Next time you're going to take time off:
1. don't invite friends over,
2. don't get sick and
3. don't get all stressed out! ;)

synaptically de-facilitate <-- got to like that one even if it's not a good thing(tm).

rookie: You're right. :( I bet my legs are junk by now. My chest/tris are OK because I forced a chest workout earlier this week. They didn't lose the strength.

Fran: Thanks! A couple of pounds make a difference!

Today I weighed myself in the official "week-end" manner and I was steady at 173lbs. I did my measurements and my abs were down 3mm but my chest/legs remained around same (note: I need to standardize my pinch areas for the legs and chest). Overall my new 3-point bf measurement was 13.8%, which is probably proof enough that I was holding a fair bit of subcutaneous water. Although it is likely there was some fat loss in there (1lb?) there was a bit of water. By the time I get to 8% I'll likely be 155 again. Actually, I'd be roughly 162 (ideally). That's not very big. I'm going to go cry now.

Remember the ninj4 hoodie I posted about a while ago? I bought it. I will take some ninj4 action shots of myself with it. Then you will all be /pwn3d.

My knees have been giving me problems the last few weeks. I haven't done any leg workouts either. I've loaded up on glucosamine and I was hoping to fix it, but it's not seeming likely. I am going to start doing high-rep bodyweight squats (20-30) to try to induce some lactic acid to strengthen the tendons. I hope it's not pulled or worse. I guess adding all the weight to leg curls, of all things, was a bad idea. I've never had bad knees before this. Add it to the list, I guess. I think I hear growth hormone calling my name...

Poor knees. And you're not even old yet!

Some guys on bb.com were saying they had relief from knee pain with high-dose flax supplementation - 3-6 tbs/day was the level they said helped them. I can't think of any reason why it would, but it probably wouldn't hurt anything either.

Glad you're starting to feel better though.
