The squat challenge was pretty successful in terms of competitors so I figured why not have another but with bench.

The competition will be how many reps you can get bench pressing however much you weigh. Rules are simpe and are as follow...

- Shoulders and butt must remain on the bench at all times
- Feet must remain on the floor at all times
- The bar must come all the way down and come in contact with your body
- For the rep to be complete it must come to full lockout position before starting the next rep

I'm sure we all trust one another so videos are not required but it couldn't hurt to get it on tape and i'm sure everyone here would be interested in seeing each others attempts. Theres no real deadline as of yet, i'll wait to see how many participants there are.

Feet arent allowed to leave the ground? Is that a standard power lifting rule?

Im in, depending on when the deadline is I'll deff. give it a try.

I am in, I have a much better shot at the squat challenge but competition is always good. I can't wait to see some of these numbers!

KevinStarke
12-11-2006, 07:26 PM
Whiteman - Yes it is a powerlifting rule and I understand not everyone here is a powerlifter but honestly, moving your feet around kills your tightness and power so you really dont wanna be moving your feet anyway. I guess if you really wanna flail your feet around you can though.

Cantstopnow - Hell yah man always good to test your limits.

Kevin, if I can get ONE bench at 270ish, I'd be estatic! I'll report back here if I do!

Clifford Gillmore

Still can't bench my BW.

KevinStarke
12-11-2006, 10:03 PM
Bohizzle - No, touch and go.

jkirk - its not right away so you have time to get ready.

Risk - Just keep at it man, theres no real deadline yet.

I'm open to additions to the competition, there could be a bodyweight for reps division and a 225 for reps division if anyones interested? Throw some ideas around if you have them.

hmm, I'll give this a shot

Brilliant idea Kev! I was hoping someone would do something like this. Bench is my best lift at the moment, so i will fair better than i will in the Squats challenge.
I like the idea of BW benching, but the 225 for reps could be good also.
I think vids should be compulsory for the top 5 place getters.
Looking forward to it.

King - Hell yah

immortal - Glad your excited man competitions are always fun. Your and I are close in weight too, EXTREME!!!

Everyone let me know what you think about having two seperate divisions?

1. Bodyweight bench for reps
2. 225 bench for reps

I'd be fine with there being two divisions and it'd be fine for everyone to compete in both if they want.

Beast

I weigh 190 right now and took it for 22 reps today. I'll try it again in a few weeks.

Hell yah beast, starting us off already.

Beast

My current 1RM is only 310 right now, to put things in perspective... I'm not a board and band-using l33t powerlifter like you other guys. ;)

KevinStarke
12-11-2006, 10:25 PM
Nice man I dont max again for a few weeks, current PR is 325. I dont use boards or bands either.

Jordanbcool

I weigh close to 230 now....I wonder how many times I could actually bench that though..

KingWilder
12-11-2006, 10:42 PM
Kev, wouldn't it just be easier to do it by bodyweight? I don't think it makes a difference if you have two divisions, but obviously more people will be willing to participate if it's simply bodyweight.

KevinStarke
12-11-2006, 10:44 PM
Yah true, could always a have a 225 for reps competition later we'll stick to bodyweight for reps for this one.

Jordan - Give it a shot man!

haha not if they weigh more than 225

KevinStarke
12-11-2006, 11:02 PM
But if they're heavier then 225 odds are there a good deal stronger then someone who weighs, say 180. I think we're just gonna stick to bodyweight for reps during this competition.

Damn Beast.. 190 for 22 reps is excellent! With a 310 max is kinda weird though man. I doubt i will be pushing 22 of 165 and my max should be close to 300 atm.. I'll see how i go next week though.

Oh I agree, bodyweight for reps sounds ace. Gah that makes two competitions I need to compete in. You should make the finish date the same as the squat one, so there is one epic day of competitionuhness!

Thanks man. I don't train for strength really... That 310 RM was the first time I've maxed out in over a year. My all-time 1RM was 325 a few years ago.

i weigh around 175 right now i got it for two the other day- thats all i was goin for but i doubt i could have gotten much more
That's phenomenal. I've never seen a girl at the gym using more than 95lb on bench.

I'll try for 6 of 170, maybe get it up to 8 of 170 by the time the competition is done. I lost some weight while I was sick, I think I am under 170 now.

If your max is 335, I really can't see you getting more than 20 with 205, hopefully you prove me wrong.

Comp sounds fun, 165 x 15 would be sweet for me.

Stumprrp
12-12-2006, 06:27 AM
perfect timing now that im doing high reps, but not good timing when im close to 220 lbs! ill go for 220 x 20. 250 x 10 was hard as ****

Bob
12-12-2006, 06:59 AM
Dang... another cool comp.
I'm up for it.. I did an easy 12 of 225 a couple of weeks ago ..
So that is the weight I'll go for since I'll be there by late Feb..

Should be fun... lol

Anthony
12-12-2006, 07:39 AM
If I could bench, I'd definitely be in. I think my best was 23-25 reps, but that was a few months ago. :(

I like the idea of making it the same date as the squat challenge too.

Guido
12-12-2006, 08:16 AM
I just might try this today. I'm gonna drop a few lbs and get down to 200ish (at 203 now). I think I should be good for ~15 reps.

bics56
12-12-2006, 08:24 AM
Sounds like a cool comp...everone can compete in...the short guys should clean up in this one. I hope to do the 225 for reps considering that is my goal to weigh in at in Feb.

KevinStarke
12-12-2006, 09:42 AM
Looks like plenty of people wanna join in, excellent. I'll set the deadline as the same as the squat challenge so start working those high reps.

immortal - haha trust me man i'm not much for high reps.

DiViN - I'm sure he could get around that man my max is 325 and i've gotten 22 reps of 205 before.

KevinStarke

I'm good at heavy weight low reps man, when was the last time you saw me bench more then 8 reps. I think everyone has a good shot at this contest.

Nik00117

I wish I could enter this one but it looks like I might never be able to touch bar to chest again without reinjuring my shoulder. Have to settle for the squat contest once I can hold the bar in place across my shoulders without tweaking my shoulder.

Looking forward to the results, though.

Perfect, I'm starting my bulk at 190lbs. I can probably get 190lbs up 15-20 times at least.

wow, Beast set the bar pretty high with 22 reps. I'll be doing mine tomorrow. I currently weigh 221 right now, so I'm just gonna do the 225 as my weight. I'm hoping for at least 15 reps +, we'll see how it goes though. Maybe I'll drop a pound to get in the 220lb weight class lol.

Like the squat video, can we stop between sets? Or, do we have to hold the bar "up" and continue? I don't weigh too much and can get some with body weight. I can get 10 or so. If I "hold" the bar (to rest) I could double that. What are the rules and where do I post my results?

nice stump, good luck, doin it tomorrow too? a couple years ago when i was 185, I got my weight up 20 times. I'm hoping I can have the same success tomorrow but we'll see.

Anybody going to be videotaping their attempt(s)?

I just had an idea. we all do the bw bench thing, and then at the end, total weight lifted is counted. say if person a does 180x10, and person b did 220x10, person b would be the deciding winner with the most weight moved (2200lbs)... dunno if anybody would be interested in that or not, just figured i'd throw it out there.

Uh... no? Your saying if a 140 lb guy benches 140 x 23 and a guy who weights 240 and benches 240 x 20 the guy who benched less repswould win just because he's heavier? Thats not really fair at all.

12-13-2006, 10:18 AM
wow what a coincidence

I did 205x15 the other day for a work out at around 202, though I had more in me

I regularly do 225x12 @~202 with stuff still left in the tank, I could prolly get near 225x15, which leads me to believe I could get 205x20 at least, so I could prolly get pretty close to Beast

I remember a thread like this about 2 years ago i think, when i was ~180, and I did 175x21 or so I believe, I really wanted 25, though that seems out of the question

if I ever give it a good 100% shot @ ~200 I will post it here

btw my max bench is like 345-350 or so, though I have been getting weaker as finals hit, so I have lost some str.

KevinStarke

I'm going to see if I can work up to close grip flat DB pressing my body weight for reps. I did 60s last night that way and my shoulder felt fine even touching chest each rep. Probably not going to be able to progress to 80s by the deadline but it's something to shoot for. :dj:

Trashed right shoulder. I ignored it too long and now I might never be able to touch my chest regular barbell benching again without causing further damage. If it was at 100% I'd already be good for 5 or 7 body weight.

dang im gonna like this, Ill get them after my workout next sunday or tuesday.

How many people think i can break the squat challenge of 50 reps, that will be my goal, only have to push up about 170, :D, been forever since ive used such lightweight high reps. boy is my chest going to burn.....
Ill even try and get a vid of me doing 305x10 to for the non believers.

I guess my final weight for this would be 250 and at most i may get 20 reps in march.

So far im at the biggest disadvantage due to my lard

Smokinhawk - Why cant you keep your butt down?

cause thats alot of weight and take everything i have to get it up ten times
I when i train my butt comes off the bench as it keeps the intensity up, it isnt legal for competion.
but when i go for competion i keep it down so its legal, though i cant get as much weight then.

I was bored today, and i was outside in the gym and i thought why not.
I honestly had no idea how many i could get. I assumed between 15-25.

I did a quick warmup, then put my 165 on the bar and repped out 25.
This is not my official result, i just thought i would post before Kevin and Smokin blow me away.. :p
I would have filmed it but it was spare of the moment. I will definately film my official reppage.

I hate to deny people a chance to participate but whether or not you think it is a bench shirt is very very very very big help. By all means try but i'm not sure I think its fair to have everyone else up against a shirted lifter. Anyone else have any input?

Chubrock
12-16-2006, 09:58 PM
I wouldn't say it's going to be TOO much help. Depending on what shirt it is, he may have trouble getting a lighter weight to touch. Plus, if that **** is super tight, I'd imagine it should be a great "feel good" experience to have to bring it down that many times haha. I could careless either way though. Vids of people training are always cool, so I say let him have at it.

KevinStarke

It really depends on the shirt. I get EXACTLY zero pounds from a cheap Inzer blast shirt, but that's just me.

I agree w. you though Kevin. Anyway, it's your challenge - you decide!

Bigmonster777
12-17-2006, 03:33 AM
Actually, looking at those rules, I'm not sure how many times I can bench 175, maybe I should give it a try....I wonder if you can get a breather, I mean, let's say you do 20 strict reps, then you lock out, you are still holding the weight, but you just hold it there for like 5 seconds or something, and try to get some oxygen into your lungs, and then you rep out 5 or ten more non-stop reps, would that be ok?
That's how I used to break personal records in the past..But I must admit I didn't use good form, sometimes I would lift my butt off the bench a bit, I would be explosive and bouncing every rep, I'd be screaming, and not fully locking out, and only locking out to get a breather or on my last rep
My personal records were 405lbs x5 reps, 315x16 or 17 reps, I'm not sure, 365x10 or 11 reps, and 225x32 reps or something, I know it sounds insane, but my form wasn't perfect, as I already mentioned, but I think it was impressive considering I was all natural and I was only about 180-185lbs
I'm not that strong anymore, unfortunetly, but I'm sure I can get that strength back...How many times I could bench 175lbs with keeping my butt down at all times, and locking out everytime, I'm not sure how many I could do it, maybe 25? I'm not sure, I would have to try it

smokinHawk
12-17-2006, 09:00 AM
^dang thats tough, im impressed...

i use a inzer blast shirt for my workouts to prevent injury, adds about 0-5lbs, its lose i can put it on and take it off my self, i wasnt going to use it for the competition though (as also i have been going raw for all my competitions) just so there isnt any doubts on my lifts.

Blackcat
12-17-2006, 09:05 AM
The shirt is a metal single ply and its very loose. I used it for training only just to add a little support at the bottom I can put it on myself. I havent been able to do much flat bench with the bar let alone shirt work so as I said I wont benefit much just looking for the added shoulder support.
Thanks guys I will give it a shot later in the week if all goes well I'll post a clip of it.

Blackcat
12-17-2006, 10:36 AM
I did a dry run today with the shirt on I will know more later today or tonight if my shoulder approves or not.

Secondly what a pump this was a blast to be able to do flats bar work again. Yeah I know, I have a double ply I have tried but it pulled on my shoulder more than supporting it I never thought of trying the single till this event.

did 135 x 40 just quit. Wanted to warm everything up good.
190 x 23, 205 x 17 & 225 x 12 I missed the 13 rep so it was all out.

I believe my shoulder will benefit with the rep work keeping good blood flow to the area without further damage is the key.

cphafner
12-17-2006, 11:34 AM
I'll give it a shot today. I just tipped the electronic scale in my bathroom at a massive 170.

KevinStarke
12-17-2006, 11:54 AM
You can definitelly stop at the lockout and breathe for a bit, you just cant rack the weight. You can not lift your butt off the bench though and you must lock the weight out. The rules in the first post are the rules that have to be followed.

I'm sorry guys but i've worked out with guys who've used cut up old blasts and what not and im sorry but they DO help you. I mean what would people say if I said I wanted to use briefs or a loose suit for the 225 squat for reps challenge? Unless you have a SERIOUS injury, in which case you really shouldnt be competing in a competition like this in the first place there is no reason anyone should be allowed to use a bench shirt in this competition. By all means anyone and everyone should compete for the fun of it but like I said before I dont think it would be very fair to have gear in a competition like this.

cphafner - hell yah man go for it.

Blackcat - so whats your weight then, the 225?

Blackcat - so whats your weight then, the 225?

No, I was just doing rep work I'm at 232 currently.

I will just not compete as I agree with the unfair advantage of the shirt I dont want to start a problem.
No biggie, I'm just hoping I will be able to train flats with out further damage to my shoulder with the shirt. So far my shoulder still feels good not as bad as it has felt training raw or with the two ply.
Training around injuries is common place in my age bracket.

Best of luck will watch the contest with a fire burning.

Quick question: Is the best bench the one with the most reps, the most weight, or a combination of both, or a correlated value using a bench chart?

Dude, you're stronger than me, but that was basically a 3 board press. You took like 6inches off the lift by arching with your ass up. That would be like me claiming a 255 bench.

Couldn't you have posted this is another thread like your jouranl or something? Or PMed it to me? This thread involves the bench competition for reps only so if you could move the video i'd appreciate it. As far as your benching... your wearing a bench shirt and raising your ass as high as you can. An arch is one thing but that just cut a loooot of distance off your bench. Anyway I dont want this turning in to another.. thread about you so lets get back on task with bench contest updates. I have 21 but not on video yet. I'm going to try for more than this, I didn't feel right after this lift. I think the repping takes a bit of getting used to, I seriously have not lifted more than 6 or 7 reps on bench in a year.

Also I think there is some strategy involved in when and how long of pauses you take, I tried banging out the first 15 or so with absolutely no pause. I see in the Hawk video he tries 10-10-2-2-1-1-1, I'm thinking like 9-7-5-2-1-1 and I could score more reps.

Any advice here guys?

I tryed it today. I got 195x15 times. really dissappointed, thought i could do better then that. Got the vid here. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kplm2TrSeqU)

I think i could definately do better then then by march, possibly 30. but i'm leaving in a week for Air Force BMT, and basically thats only going to be running and pushups, which i gonna f*** my whole progress up... owell.

Nice job suntorn.. but I agree wit Stump.. about half those reps didn't touch.. but I don't think the rules are that strict..

I kinda like the last rep the best.. looks like you have experience bailing out without spotters.. been there myself a few times.. it doesn't really start hurting until you get over 275.. lol .. just gotta roll fast over the groin.. lol..

And don't worry about the air force.. just keep doing your pushups & pullups.. and then try to add single leg squats, back extensions, shoulder pushups, etc.. you can keep a lot of your strength. GL and thanks for putting your time in the service..

I reckon you could have got two more man. That "failed" rep looked like you didnt even try...
Aim for 20 by the deadline mate, you can do it.
Nice benching, a couple were iffy, but at least you could pick up on it..

jtteg - sounds good man let us know how it goes.

suntorn - spotters are key, gives you that little bit of extra confidence you sometimes need. Plenty of time before the deadline man just keep at it.

Levantar - Plenty of time man, keep working your bench strength.

Great job DiViN just updated the main page. Congrats to everyone else on their achievements and all but this is a bodyweight for reps challenge and what you max or what you do more then your bodyweight for reps really means nothing so if people could just keep posting there bodyweight for reps attempts I'd appreciate it.

Just curious , if I do this on my WBB#1 chest day , how should I proceed with the rest of the workout? Should I do the rest of chest or go straight to back? Also if I continue to do chest should I drop the weight some and go for more reps , kinda of like the challenge? As always thanks for the input.

Ya, I'm in. I probably won't do too good since I haven't been lifting due to a wrist injury, but I'm definately in. Can't video tape it though because I don't have my camera yet. I think I lost a lot on my bench and everything else since I hurt my wrist. It's starting to feel better though. I'm gonna see if I can lift tomorrow. I think my weight is up to 130.

Lost 5 lbs from being sick over the weekend, gave this a run today after failing miserably at maxing out. 155 x 34, first time doing high reps in a long while. I dont plan to compete in this after this attempt though so if a mod could give control of the thread to someone else somehow i'd appreciate it (not sure if that can be done?)

I weigh in at an incredibly 185lbs, and my maximum bench is 75kg with about 5 reps. I can do 70kgs at 10 reps max.

Guido
01-31-2007, 09:40 PM
Well, I wasn't down to 200. In fact, I weighed in at 205.5, so I went ahead and did 205 again for reps. I got 16 reps again, which I think is the same as before. :(

But I'm gonna get down to 200 eventually and try it...
