Alright, so my mother has diabetes. She has since she was 12 (she is now 54). Her diet is crazy. It consists of coffee, tea, cigarettes and toast. Is there a site I can go to that I could get good info on diabetic diets? I think it would help her out a lot controlling low blood sugars and all. Or is this the type of thing that I should leave up to my dr? I have a sneaking suspicion that the family dr. is constantly on Valium. He is pretty much useless. Any help?

Find a new doc? I was under the impression that diabetics had to watch their diets fairly carefully?

is she a type 1 or type 2? i'm assuming she's a type 1 since she's had it since she was 12. So first off, the most important thing to do is make sure she doesn't give too much insulin. Secondly, most important thing to do is to get her on a healthy diet, it doesn't have to be carb restricting (unless she's type 2) but just make sure she injects the right amount of insulin. Her diet isn't healthy for anyone, let alone a diabetic. always have some apple or grape juice lying around for low times. Let me know some specifics and I'll help u as much as I can (I've been a type 1 diabetic since I was 2).

This site looks pretty solid: http://diabetes.niddk.nih.gov/dm/pubs/eating_ez/

A smoker and a type I diabetic? That makes her a ticking time bomb for all sorts of problems. The best thing you could do for her is get her to quit smoking.
