I saw a highjumping video clip where a guy held the bar wide grip, started up like a power clean, but raised the bar until his arms were fully extended over his head. In order to get there he needed to dip his hips quite low, about parallel or lower. And then he stood up with the bar over his head. All in one smooth, powerful motion. Does anyone know the name of the lift?

I'd like to start trying it because of power and fast twitch speed this lift looks like it builds up. Is there any tips anyone can give me on performing the lift with correct form?

Its called the snatch. And proper form takes years and a good coach. You can semi learn a little by yourself and from reading but it'll really take somebody coaching you get the finer points of it. If you are just looking to increase muscle speed, increase the speed of your squats and power cleans. Not really trying to be mean in deterring you from learning the snatch but just that's it not an easy lift to master and can be a little irritating.

A few videos of some one-handed snatches can be seen here:

You can do a search on youtube for some more videos as well.

Been posted here before, but it's a great instructional video on power cleaning and power snatching: http://www.infinityfitness.com/videos/nl/chado2.asf

Don't discourage they guy from trying. How long it takes is different for everyone. It took me two months to get the basics down after that it is fine tooning.

Doing snatch, cleans, jerks, and other compound movements will increase speed and muscle power.

You should have a coach if you plan on doing any amount of weight.

Great video, is the little hop during the lift just giving you a little extra power, our coach never said anything about that and most people on our team do power cleans flat footed or maybe up on toes.

Here is the link to the other video I was referring to, you can see that it's similar, maybe in this one the guy gets a little lower.

Once you legs are extended, you hop just 1 millionth of a second before you shrug and pop the weight goes up that fast.

There are a few little tricks that can drastically change the lift. If it feels effortless you are doing it right. :burger:

To me, a properly executed squat snatch is the single most impressive display of power and strength there is.
